At this point,I am not sure that RCSC will offerany opportunities to interact withthose candidates seeking offices atthe county level, but you can betthat there will be plenty of advertising for the position of Sheriff ofMaricopa County around Sun City. The state level is, again, where weshould take the time to evaluateeach candidate. There are at leastfour candidates running for twopositions in the legislature, andthere are at least two individualsrunning for a position in the StateSenate. It is important that youevaluate each of these candidatessince they are critical part of yourlife in Sun City. They make decisions regarding you as resident ofArizona, and as a resident of SunCity. There will be some quorumsfeaturing the candidates competing for these positions whichwill give you the opportunity tolook them in the eye, and ask thatimportant question; the one that ismost important to you.Whether you are seeking information on RCSC Board candidate quorums or those focused on countyand state candidates, I am suggesting that you attend at least oneof those forums and get to knowthe candidates. We, RCSC, will bepublishing a schedule indicatingthe date, time, and location of thecandidate’s forum for the Board ofDirectors. Most importantly, castyour ballot for the candidate ofyour choice, remember men andwomen before us have given theirlives so that we could have theright to vote, so let’s use that rightand use it 30Write in the events you want to attend,Clip out & place in a convienent location.9/19/39/69/59/79/89/99/10Mountain View Center: 623-876-30429749 N. 107th Ave.9/11Oakmont Center: 623-876-304610725 W. We mightponder the question, which is moreimportant; after all it could take anawful lot of time to evaluate all thecandidates. While this is true, it isworth the time that is invested tofeel confident in the choice youhave made. It is important thatyou, and only you, make the choicewhen selecting the person thatyou vote for. How do you makethe determination to vote for anyindividual? Probably, the best thingyou can do is to do your own evaluation on the person. The Recreation Centers of Sun Citytries to help you in that process byrequiring that each candidate foroffice provide a copy of his/her biographical sketch and make it available at each recreation center. Inaddition, there will be a number ofquorums scheduled that will provide you, the members, an opportunity to listen to the candidate’spresentations and ask any specificquestions that you might have. June startedslowly and fell behind farther during astretch of 110 degree days. Twenty fourdays in June exceeded the historicalhigh. The above normal temperaturesand an increasingly number of highend courses lowering their fees is putting pressure on our ability to generateincreased revenues during the summer months. We do however continueto enjoy your support in merchandisesales and driving range usage, both ofwhich exceeded prior year’s sales. The new “30 yard markers” are in theprocess of being installed on all of thecourses. The wording and design ofthe sign were approved by golf advisory and were made by the Bell MetalClub. We thank the members of theBell Metal Club for their efforts in theconstruction of the signs. Golf Advisory chose to not use “30 yards” in thewording of the sign, so the signs couldbe moved, decreasing the chances ofwear patterns developing around thesigns.Snack ShopsJoin a LeagueDo you enjoy bowling and want to improve yourgame? We continue to water theareas that are completed on a schedule similar to overseeding. This willproduce standing water in low areasand soggy conditions throughout thecourse. Water is turned off in an areafor several days for irrigation work to becompleted in this area. Following completion of the work, the water is turnedback on and the area is watered heavyuntil the grass is recovered and theaffects of construction have been minimized. Some affects of constructioncan be expected to last even throughoverseeding.Due to the overall lack of rain this year,we are currently over our yearly budgetby 94.93 acre feet. We do have unusedwater credits purchased last year, thesecredits will be used to cover any overage we will have this year.RANGER HOURSThe Rangers donated a total of 59 hoursin July. A Community NewsletterGOLF NEWSPage 05Dear Golfers:A letter to Golfers on August 9, 2012 from Brian Duthu, PGA; Director of Golf for RCSCThe past several weeks I have received numerouscomments, complaints and suggestions on theconditions of our golf courses. It is troubling tohear these comments, as this time of year these comments are coming from our core group of golfers, which are our year round residents. I hope throughthe course of this letter I am able to satisfy some of thequestions that have been circulating and ultimatelydescribe the actions you can take to address them aswell.Summer is our peak growing season, particularly themonsoon season which begins the later part of July. This is the time of year we must complete the bulk ofour maintenance practices. Aerification is the mostimpactful to golfers, especially greens aerification. The USGA recommends impacting 15% – 20% of aputting green surface per year, to keep the organicmatter near the surface of the green under 3%. Ifthis organic matter is not removed the resulting putting green surface would become spongy and proneto disease. In order to achieve 20% we conduct twoaerifications. The first aerification is with a 1/2” tineand the second with a larger 5/8” tine. We do thelarger tine aerification second, as the bermuda grassis growing more aggressively and is able to recovermore quickly. After the greens are aerified they are“top dressed” with sand and in the case of the secondaerification a mixture of ground up “plugs” taken fromthe green during aerification and sand. This year many golfers have commented that we didnot top dress adequately, particularly during the second aerification. Please realize that the topdressingis designed to fill the holes to the soil surface. Theputting greens are mowed to height of approximately1/6” following aerification. The height of the grass, surrounding a plug, will create a “hole” in the puttingsurface and makes putting frustrating. The amount ofsand we use is designed to allow the greens to healas quickly as possible. It is also important to note thethese procedures are conducted in the same manner as they were prior to National Golf Maintenancetaking over the maintenance of the golf courses, including the amount of sand used. We realize howimpactful this process is to our summer golfers andappreciate your patience.Transition is another painful process our summer golfers need to contend with. Transition begins in latespring and early summer and is the period in whichthe rye grass dying and the bermuda grass is not yetgrowing fast enough to fill in any resulting bare spots.Depending on weather rye grass can live well intoJune and is competing with our bermuda for “turf”.To alleviate this turf war, RCSC sprays four coursesper year with an herbicide, which kills the rye grassbut does not harm the bermuda. The resulting barespots are frustrating to golfers, but allow the bermudato recover more quickly. These bare spots appear inLakes East: (623) 876-3023Lakes West: (623) 876-302010433 Talisman Rdthe areas the berumda is the weakest, especially oncourses that have been recently renovated, such asWillowcreek. As we move through this five year program the effects will be less noticeable and the transitions shorter. The USGA recommends a minimum of 100 days ofgrowth for bermuda during the summer months priorto overseeding. Spraying our rye grass out assuresus more than 100 days of growth and ensures thatwe have a solid base of bermuda prior to overseeding. This process is used at many courses throughoutthe Valley, despite the misconception that the SunCity courses are the only ones doing it. Our coursesthat do not spray will still suffer the effects of transition; however the effects will be noticeable into July. This was evident at North and Willowcreek this year,as they went through a natural transition. The bermuda planted at Willowcreek last year was even moresusceptible, having undergone its first overseed following the renovation. It is normal for a course toexperience turf issues two to three years following arenovation, this will apply to Lakes West in the nextcouple of years as well. Now I would like to describe the ways that you, asa golfer, can have an impact. First, keep the comments coming; the most convenient way is throughthe comment cards available at each golf course. Thecomments we receive are important to us and we willrespond promptly. Second, join a Green Committee, comments and suggestions made at the courselevel are taken to Golf Advisory meetings for discussion and if deemed appropriate, acted upon. If youdo not wish to join a Green Committee, you many stillattend and express your concerns in the open forum.Third, attend the golf advisory meetings; you can seefirsthand the items that are important to your fellowgolfers and the actions that are being taken. Fourth, attend the Board/Member exchanges, currently heldmost months on the 1st and 3rd Monday at 9:00 a.m.at the Lakeview Center, beginning in 2013 (possiblysooner) the meetings will be held on the 2nd Mondayof the month. All members, in good standing, havean opportunity to speak directly to the entire boardon issues that are important to them. Fifth, run forthe board; you will have direct influence on items thatare important to the fellow members you represent. Finally, hunt me down; my office is at Riverview andyou are welcome to stop by to express your concerns.I can also be reached by phone or by email. I do mybest to respond within 24 hours. Please feel free tostop me as well, if you see me while I am visiting thecourses. Please remember that many of the “facts” that are circulated are not always factual. Often they are formedby a well meaning member expressing an opinion, often laced with hyperbole. As this opinion is spreadit begins to be taken as fact. I have heard much dis-North: (623) 876-301012650 N. 107th Ave.South: (623) 876-301511000 N. 103rd Ave.cussion lately that our courses were in better shapebefore we began using an outside maintenance company. The core of the current maintenance team ismade of the same people that performed their workas RCSC employees, including all of the Superintendents and the Director of Maintenance, John Snyder. This is just one example of an opinion becoming a“fact”.In closing we ask that you remember we strive toprovide a golf experience that is enjoyable as well aseconomical. Our staffing size is a fraction of the sizeof many of the high end courses in the area. Many ofthese courses are subsidized by the developer, solelyto promote the sales of homes or home sites. We cannot compete with these courses either in the level ofservice or the quality of product. The low summerrates these courses offer make it difficult to compete, many of the courses that charge 100 or more in thewinter can be played for 35 or 40 in the summer. These rates attract many of our residents, which putsadditional strain on our budget. Our residents willbring back many ideas while playing these courses, not all of these ideas are fiscally responsible to on ourcourses. Plus as you take your money outside of SunCity, we have fewer resources with which to accomplish our goals. Golf remains an important piece of theSun City experience; however our decisions impact allRCSC members and need to remain responsible. We thank everyone for your past and current support. Please remember that all course workers are humanand as such will make mistakes. We will use thesemistakes as a training opportunity in an attempt toavoid repeating them. They also continue to producea quality product for a substantially lower cost thanmany of the courses around us. Please remember wealso enjoy positive feedback, when it is warranted.Thank you for your time and happy golfing!!Brian Duthu can be reached by Email: bduthu@sunaz.com or by phone: 623-876-30538 Golf CoursesWillowbrook: (623) 876-3033Willowcreek: (623) 876-303010600 N.
