CMHC/MCFC Practicum & Internship Manual6Ethical StandardsWestern Kentucky University’s CMHC and MCFC programs adhere to the AmericanCounseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice (2014).Additionally, the MCFC program students adhere to the International Association ofMarriage and Family Counselors (IAMFC) Ethical Codes (2011).Professional DressThe Department of Counseling and Student Affairs is proud of its recognition within thecommunity and across the country. It is our goal to (faculty, staff and students) continueto represent this Department with professionalism. Professional dress at MCFC, CMHCand School Counseling practicum and internship sites may not necessarily expected ofcounselors and interns in some organizations. While we respect the preferences ofother organizations, we require our students (who represent the integrity andprofessionalism of the Department of Counseling and Student Affairs) to dress inprofessionally (i.e., business casual) at their clinical counseling sites. Therefore, we want to stress the importance and expectation of attending sites dressedprofessionally and appropriately for the clientele. For example, overdressing (e.g.,business suit, overly flashy) may alienate some low-income clients; whereas dressingtoo casually (e.g., yoga pants, shorts, tank tops, t-shirts, or clothing with holes, stains, orexcessive wrinkles) may lower your credibility with other clients unless your workrequires it (e.g., working with animals, outdoor activities). You are also strongly advisedto avoid wearing anything too revealing or distracting including low-cut tops, short skirtsor dresses, tight clothing, strong perfumes. The counseling session is not about you oryour personal identity so that is not the place to express yourself. Please keep yourclients’ attention on their presenting concern and not your choice of attire, jewelry, orperfume.
