WHY BUSINESS EXCELLENCE?What is the Business ExcellenceFramework?The Australian Business Excellence Framework – the‘Framework’ — describes an integrated approach toleadership and management that is based on the provenpractice capable of achieving outstanding success andsustainability and long-term sustainability. TheFramework draws on a vast body of knowledge, developedby leading theorists and practitioners, that provides practicalguidance to any organisation.The Australian Business Excellence Framework hasbeen designed to enable any organisation to usethis knowledge to choose how it can best pursuebusiness improvement, recognising the uniquenature of each enterprise.This is a free 6 page sample. Access the full version online.Business Excellence provides organisations with asystematic and structured approach to assess and improvethe performance of its leadership and managementsystems, in the key areas of organisational capability,namely:What is in the Framework?The Australian Business Excellence Framework (illustrated onpage 15) is an integrated leadership and managementsystem that describes elements essential to sustainableorganisational excellence. It is based on a set of 12 provenPrinciples (refer to page 10 to 13) of leadership andmanagement, which are translated into a set of criteria with7 Categories containing 22 Items (refer to pages 16 to 17). Italso includes a system of self-assessment based, on theconcepts of organisational learning (refer to pages 40 to 41).A Glossary of Terms is provided in Appendix A.Why do organisations use the Framework?Organisations use an internationally recognised frameworksuch as the Australian Business Excellence Framework to: Measure the performance of the organisation’sleadership and management systems at all levels. Build the results of this diagnosis into the organisation’sstrategic planning processes and achieve consistency ofdirection. Engage and involve people from all levels of theorganisation in the assessment and improvementplanning. Integrate business improvement into normal businessoperations. Leadership Strategy and Planning Data, Information and Knowledge People Customer and Market Focus Innovation, Quality and Improvement Establish benchmarks relative to best practice. Success and Sustainability Focus the organisation into business improvementsaligned with organisational goals. Progressively upgrade the capabilities of theorganisation to drive improvement. Be recognised for their achievements in excellence andbest practice through the Australian Business ExcellenceAwards. Demonstrate to key stakeholders (i.e. customers,shareholders, boards, community, employees) that theorganisation has a structured and systematic approachto improving and achieving best practice and excellence.When an organisation embarks on a journey for excellence,it is challenged to look within and address key questions,such as ‘how are we really performing as an organisation?’,‘what are we good at?’, ‘what do we need to improve?’. Aninternationally recognised model such as the AustralianBusiness Excellence Framework ensures that the focus ofthe organisational review remains holistic, is a collectivediscovery encompassing all levels of the organisation, andconsiders factors that can influence performance. Thisapproach clarifies the issues that may inhibit organisationaladvancement.
