From the Resident Artistic DirectorEarlier this season we presented Joe DiPietro’spowerful The Second Mrs. Wilson, a real lifehistorical drama about two very fascinatingand complicated people: Edith Galt Wilsonand her husband, President Woodrow Wilson. The very enthusiastic response to that playwas a testament to our audience’s desirefor new plays, the presentation of which isMichael MastroResident Artistic Director a significant part of George Street’s mission. You’ll understand, then, how excited we are to be following upthat production with our current offering, Nureyev’s Eyes.David Rush’s beautiful play is also about two very real people. However, the world in which his characters – international balletstar Rudolph Nureyev and painter Jamie Wyeth – find themselvesis as far from the White House as you can get. This story of twogreat artists who struggle to find the truth in themselves andin their work, and who fight the good fight to see that workrealized, makes for a fascinating story. The passion, talent, humorand artistic commitment at play between these two singular menover the course of their 18 year friendship ignite many a creativefire for each of them.Enjoy!Michael MastroResident Artistic Director

Capturing Nureyev:James Wyeth paints the dancer“Wyeth was well known for hisportraits of animals as well as forhis portraits of celebrities andhe found the perfect melding ofboth in Nureyev. The dancer hada dangerous, feral quality abouthim, and an infamous temperthat could flare, and then just asquickly disappear. Yet there wasalso a sweet, childlike aspect tothe dancer that was evident tothose who knew him well.Although Nureyev was one of themost photographed dancers of thetime, Wyeth felt there were aspectsof the dancer that had not beenseen and could not be captured withphotography. Wyeth commented,‘I spent hours just watching Nureyevpractice, and did hundreds ofstudies of him, purely because I wasdying to record him. He was enigmatic, a very complex individual.’Nureyev was Wyeth’s most difficultmodel. Although Nureyev hadagreed to pose for the portrait,Wyeth found it nearly impossibleto get the busy dancer to interrupthis schedule for the sittings.Wyeth recalled, in desperation, asking another dancer with a similarframe to stand in for the initialstudies. Nuryev was highly sensitiveabout the way his body was portrayed. He was enraged when hefound about the substitute modeland he began regularly scheduledsittings immediately. Wyeth noted,‘If I did a drawing of his toe, hewanted to see if it was correct. Finally we had this great argumentand I had to explain, “Rudolf, you’re interpretive in your danceand many of these drawings areinterpretive too.”’Although temperamentally verydifferent, Wyeth and Nureyev foundcommon ground; each was obsessedwith his craft. Both artists startedwith traditional training beforefinding their own, more interpretivemethods of expression. It would takeseveral years for the busy dancer toagree to pose for the painter, butthe series of portraits that Wyethcreated of Nureyev is an in-depthphysical and psychological studyof this intriguing personality.”Smith, Lauren R. 2002. Nureyev Revisited. In Pamela Bolinger (Ed.), Capturing Nureyev.
