After installing the battery,you can make and receive short calls, but replace the handsetin the telephone base or additional charger when not in use.For optimal performance, charge the handset battery for at least16 hours before use. Getting startedAdding and registering handsetsBefore using a new TL70008 handset, you must register it withthe 72408/TL78108/TL78208/TL78308/TL78408 telephonebase (purchased separately). The 72408/TL78108/TL78208/TL78308/TL78408 telephone can accommodate up to fourcordless handsets. The handset provided with the TL71108/TL72108/TL78108 isautomatically registered as handset 1. Additional handsets willbe assigned numbers in the order they are registered (handset2, handset 3, or handset 4). You can register a maximum offour handsets. The TL71208/TL72208/TL78208 has two handsetsautomatically registered as handset 1 and 2. You can registertwo additional handsets, which will be assigned numbers 3and 4. The TL71308/TL72308/TL78308 has three handsetsautomatically registered as handset 1, 2 and 3. You canregister one additional handset, which will be assignednumber 4. The TL72408/TL78408 has four pre-registered handsets, soyou cannot register any additional handsets to it.

Getting startedAdding and registering handsetsTo register a handset to your telephone baseNOT REGISTERED When first purchased, all optional accessoryhandsets show NOT REGISTERED on thescreen. The new handset may need to becharged for five minutes before registering tothe telephone base. Make sure your handset battery is properlyinstalled and charged (pages 5-6).PRESS HNDST LOC4 SEC ON BASEPLEASE WAIT.HANDSET XREGISTERED Place the unregistered handset into thetelephone base. After a few seconds PRESSHNDST LOC 4 SEC ON BASE will be shown onthe screen. Press and hold HANDSET LOCATOR on themain telephone base until the IN USE lightcomes on (about four seconds), then releasethe button. The handset will show PLEASE WAIT. for awhile. The handset will show HS X REGISTERED and willbeep if the registration was successful.NOTE: If the registration is not successful, the displaywill show NOT REGISTERED. Reset the handset bylifting the handset out of the telephone base andthen place the handset back in the telephone base.Now try the registration process again.

Getting startedReplacing a handsetYou may need to de-register your handsets if:You have the maximum number of registered handsets (four) andneed to replace a handset.-ORYou wish to change the designated handset number of yourregistered handsets.You must first de-register ALL the handsets, and then re-registerALL the handsets you wish to use.Please read carefully through all the instructions on this pagebefore beginning the de-registration process.To de-register all handsets1. Press and holdHANDSET LOCATOR on the telephone basefor about 10 seconds (until the IN USE light turns on and startsto flash), then release theHANDSET LOCATOR button.2. Immediately press and releaseHANDSET LOCATOR again.You must pressHANDSET LOCATOR while the IN USE lightis still flashing. (The light flashes about seven seconds. If thelight stops flashing, pick up the handset and place back intothe telephone base, then start again step number one.)3. The handset(s) will show CONNECTING. and it will take about10 seconds to complete de-registration. ALL handsets willshow NOT REGISTERED if de-registration was successful.NOT REGISTERED

Getting startedReplacing a handset4. To re-register the handset(s) to the telephone base, follow theregistration instructions on page 8.NOTES:1. If the de-registration process was not successful, you may need to reset the systemand try again. To reset: pick up the handset and press the PHONE/FLASH button,then press the OFF/CLEAR button and place the handset back into the telephonebase. You may also reset by unplugging the power from the telephone base andplug it back in.2. You cannot de-register the handset(s) if any phone connected to your phone line isin use.10

For best results, use anAT&T 2.5 mm headset. AppendixTroubleshootingIf you have difficulty with your telephone, please try thesuggestions below. For Customer Service, visit our website atwww.telephones.att.com, or call 1 (800) 222–3111. InCanada dial 1 (866) 288-4268.My phonedoesn’t workat all. Make sure the power cord is securelyplugged in. Make sure that the battery connector issecurely plugged into the cordless handset. Make sure the telephone line cord issecurely and firmly plugged into thetelephone base and the telephone wall jack. Charge the battery in the cordless handsetfor at least 16 hours. For optimum dailyperformance, return the cordless handset toits base when not in use. If the battery is depleted, it may takeapproximately four minutes to charge thehandset before it can resume screen display. Reset the telephone base. Unplug the unit’selectrical power. Wait for approximately 15seconds, then plug it back in. Allow up toone minute for the cordless handset andtelephone base to reset. You may need to purchase a new battery,please refer to page 6 of this user’s manual.I cannot get adial tone. First try all the suggestions above. Move the cordless handset closer to thetelephone base. You might have moved outof range.12

AppendixTroubleshooting If the previous suggestions don’t work,disconnect the telephone base from thetelephone jack and connect to a differentphone. If there is no dial tone on thatphone either, the problem is in yourwiring or local service. Contact your localtelephone company. Your line cord might be malfunctioning.Try installing a new line cord.I cannot dialout. First try all the suggestions above. Make sure you have a dial tone beforedialing. The cordless handset may take asecond or two to find the telephone baseand produce a dial tone. This is normal.Wait an extra second before dialing. Eliminate any background noise. Noisefrom a television, radio or other appliancesmay cause the phone to not dial outproperly. If you cannot eliminate thebackground noise, first try muting thecordless handset before dialing, or dialingfrom another room in your home with lessbackground noise. If the other phones in your home arehaving the same problem, the problemis in your wiring or local service. Contactyour local telephone company (chargesmay apply).13

AppendixTroubleshootingMy cordlesshandset isn’tperformingnormally. Make sure the power cord is securelyplugged into the telephone base. Plug theunit into a different, working electrical outletnot controlled by a wall switch. Move the cordless handset closer to thetelephone base. You might have moved outof range. Reset the telephone base. Unplug the unit’selectrical power. Wait for 15 seconds thenplug it back in. Allow up to one minute forthe cordless handset and telephone base toreset. Other electronic products can causeinterference to your cordless phone. Tryinstalling your phone as far away from thesetypes of electronic devices as possible:television sets, VCRs, or other cordlesstelephones.CONNECTING. Ensure that the telephone base is poweredup.displays on mycordless handset. Place the cordless handset in the telephonebase for one minute to allow the cordlesshandset and base to resynchronizechannels. Move the cordless handset closer to thetelephone base. You might have moved outof range.14

AppendixTroubleshooting Reset the telephone base. Unplug the unit’selectrical power. Wait for 15 seconds thenplug it back in. Allow up to one minute forthe cordless handset and telephone base toreset. Other electronic products can causeinterference with your cordless phone. Tryinstalling your phone as far away from thesetypes of electronic devices as possible:television sets, VCRs, or other cordlesstelephones.The batterieswill not hold acharge. If the cordless handset is in its telephonebase or charger and the charge light doesnot come on, refer to The charge light isoff in this Troubleshooting guide. Charge the battery in the cordless handsetfor at least 16 hours. For optimum dailyperformance, return the cordless handset toits base when not in use. If the battery is depleted, it may takeapproximately four minutes to charge thehandset before it can resume screen display. You may need to purchase a new battery,please refer to the Battery installation andcharging section of this user’s manual. Your phone might be malfunctioning. Pleaserefer to the Limited warranty section ofthis user’s manual for further instruction.15

AppendixTroubleshootingI get noise,static, or weaksignal evenwhen I’m nearthe telephonebase. If you subscribe to high-speed Internetservice (Digital Subscriber Line - DSL)through your telephone line, you mustinstall a DSL filter between the telephonebase and the telephone wall jack. The filterwill prevent noise and caller ID problemscaused by DSL interference. Pleasecontact your DSL service provider for moreinformation about DSL filters. You may be able to improve theperformance of your cordless phone byinstalling your new telephone base as faras possible from any other existing cordlesstelephone system that may already beinstalled. Other electronic products can causeinterference to your cordless phone. Tryinstalling your phone as far away from thefollowing electronic devices as possible:television sets, VCRs, or other cordlesstelephones. Do not install this phone near a microwaveoven or on the same electrical outlet. Youmay experience decreased performancewhile the microwave oven is operating. If your phone is plugged in with a modemor a surge protector, plug the phone (ormodem/surge protector) into a differentlocation. If this doesn’t solve the problem,re-locate your phone or modem fartherapart from one another, or use a differentsurge protector.16

AppendixTroubleshooting Relocate your phone to a higher location.The phone will likely have better receptionwhen not installed in a low area. If the other phones in your home arehaving the same problem, the problem is inyour wiring or local service. Contact yourlocal telephone company (charges mayapply).I hear othercalls while usingmy phone. Disconnect the telephone base from thetelephone jack, and plug in a differenttelephone. If you still hear other calls, theproblem is probably in your wiring or localservice. Call your local telephone company.My cordlesshandset doesnot ring when Ireceive a call. Make sure that the ringer is not turned off.Refer to the section(s) on ringer selectionin this user’s manual. Make sure the telephone line cord isplugged securely into the telephone baseand the telephone jack. Make sure thepower cord is securely plugged in. The cordless handset may be too far fromthe telephone base. Charge the battery in the cordless handsetfor at least 16 hours. For optimum dailyperformance, return the cordless handsetto its base when not in use.17

AppendixTroubleshooting You may have too many extension phoneson your telephone line to allow all of themto ring simultaneously. Try unpluggingsome of the other phones. The layout of your home or office mightbe limiting the operating range. Try movingthe telephone base to another location,preferably on an upper floor. If the other phones in your home arehaving the same problem, the problem is inyour wiring or local service. Contact yourlocal telephone company (charges mayapply). Test a working phone at the phone jack. Ifanother phone has the same problem, theproblem is the phone jack. Contact yourlocal telephone company (charges mayapply). Other electronic products can causeinterference with your cordless phone.Try installing your phone as far awayas possible from electronic devices liketelevision sets, VCRs, or other cordlesstelephones. Re-install the battery, and place cordlesshandset in the telephone base. Wait forthe cordless handset to re-establish itsconnection with the telephone base. Allowup to one minute for this to take place. Your line cord might be malfunctioning. Tryinstalling a new line cord.18

AppendixTroubleshootingMy calls fadeout or cut inand out whileI’m usingmy cordlesshandset. Other electronic products can causeinterference with your cordless phone. Tryinstalling your phone as far away from thefollowing electronic devices as possible:television sets, VCRs, or other cordlesstelephones. Do not install this phone near a microwaveoven or on the same electrical outlet. Youmay experience decreased performance whilethe microwave oven is operating. If your phone is plugged in with a modem orsurge protector, plug the phone (or modem/surge protector) into a different location.If this doesn’t solve the problem, re-locateyour phone or modem farther apart from oneanother, or use a different surge protector. Relocate your telephone base to a higherlocation. The phone will have betterreception when not installed in a low area. If the other phones in your home are havingthe same problem, the problem is in yourwiring or local service. Contact your localtelephone company (charges may apply).The chargelight is off. Make sure the power and line cords areplugged in correctly and securely. Unplug the unit’s electrical power. Wait for15 seconds, then plug it back in. Allow upto one minute for the cordless handset andtelephone base to reset.19

AppendixTroubleshooting Clean the cordless handset and telephonebase charging contacts each month using apencil eraser or cloth. Your phone might be malfunctioning. Pleaserefer to the Limited warranty section of thisuser’s manual for further instruction.My caller IDisn’t working. Caller ID is a subscription service. You mustsubscribe to this service from your localtelephone company for this feature to workon your phone. If you subscribe to high-speed Internetservice (Digital Subscriber Line - DSL)through your telephone line, you mustinstall a DSL filter between the telephonebase and the telephone wall jack. The filterwill prevent noise and caller ID problemscaused by DSL interference. Pleasecontact your DSL service provider for moreinformation about DSL filters. Your caller must be calling from an areathat supports caller ID. Both you and your caller’s telephonecompanies must use caller IDcompatible equipment.20

AppendixTroubleshootingSystem doesnot receivecaller ID whenon a call. Make sure you subscribe to caller ID withcall waiting features services provided byyour local telephone company. Caller IDfeatures will work only if both you and thecaller are in areas offering caller ID service,and if both telephone companies usecompatible equipment.Common curefor electronicequipment.If the unit does not seem to be respondingnormally, try putting the cordless handset inits base. If it does not seem to respond, do thefollowing (in the order listed): Disconnect the power to the telephonebase. Disconnect the cordless handset battery,and spare battery, if applicable. Wait a few minutes. Connect power to the telephone base. Re-install the battery, and place thecordless handset into the telephone base. Wait for the cordless handset to re-establishits connection with the telephone base.Allow up to one minute for this to takeplace.21

AppendixMaintenanceTaking care of your telephone Your cordless telephone contains sophisticated electronic parts,so it must be treated with care. Avoid rough treatment. Place the handset down gently. Save the original packing materials to protect your telephone ifyou ever need to ship it.Avoid water Your telephone can be damaged if it gets wet. Do not use thehandset outdoors in the rain, or handle it with wet hands. Do notinstall the telephone base near a sink, bathtub or shower.Electrical storms Electrical storms can sometimes cause power surges harmful toelectronic equipment. For your own safety, take caution whenusing electric appliances during storms.Cleaning your telephone Your telephone has a durable plastic casing that should retainits luster for many years. Clean it only with a soft cloth slightlydampened with water or a mild soap. Do not use excess water or cleaning solvents of any kind.Remember that electrical appliances can cause serious injury if used when youare wet or standing in water. If the telephone base should fall into water, DO NOTRETRIEVE IT UNTIL YOU UNPLUG THE POWER CORD AND TELEPHONE LINE CORDSFROM THE WALL. Then pull the unit out by the unplugged cords.22

Avoid using a telephone during a thunderstorm. There may bea slight chance of electric shock from lightning. Do not use a telephone in the vicinity of a gas leak. If yoususpect a gas leak, report it immediately, but use a telephoneaway from the area where gas is leaking. If this product is acordless model, make sure the telephone base is also away fromthe area. Do not use this product near water, or when you are wet. Telephone calls are transmitted between the telephone base and the handset by radiowaves, so there is a possibility that your cordless telephoneconversations could be intercepted by radio receiving equipment within range of the cordless handset. For this reason,you should not think of cordless telephone conversationsas being as private as those on corded telephones.Electrical power: The telephone base of this cordless telephone must be connected to a working electrical outlet whichis not controlled by a wall switch. Calls cannot be made fromthe handset if the telephone base is unplugged, switchedoff, or if the electrical power is interrupted.Potential TV interference: Some cordless telephones operateat frequencies that may cause interference to TVs and VCRs.To minimize or prevent such interference, do not place thetelephone base of the cordless telephone near or on top of aTV or VCR. If interference is experienced, moving the cordlesstelephone farther away from the TV or VCR will often reduceor eliminate the interference.24

AppendixImportant safety information Rechargeable batteries: This product contains either nickelcadmium or nickel-metal hydride rechargeable batteries. Exercise care in handling batteries in order not to create a shortcircuit with conductive material such as rings, bracelets, andkeys. The battery or conductor may overheat and cause harm.Observe proper polarity between the battery and the batterycharger. Nickel-metal-hydride rechargeable batteries: Dispose ofthese batteries in a safe manner. Do not burn or puncture.Like other batteries of this type, if burned or punctured, theycould release caustic material which could cause injury.The RBRC Seal means that the manufacturer is voluntarily participatingin an industry program to collect and recycle Nickel-metal hydriderechargeable batteries when taken out of service within the UnitedStates. These batteries may be taken to a participating local retailer ofreplacement batteries or recycling center. Or you may call 1-800-8BATTERY for locations accepting spent Ni-MH batteries.Precautions for users of implanted cardiac pacemakersCardiac pacemakers (applies only to digital cordless telephones):Wireless Technology Research, LLC (WTR), an independent research entity, led a multidisciplinary evaluation of the interferencebetween portable wireless telephones and implanted cardiacpacemakers. Supported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration,WTR recommends to physicians that:25
