How urgent is it?Your prayers are asked as we ponder thisquestion for our mission. There has a been asurge in requests for retreats, days ofrecollection, individual three and Hive day guidedretreats. These are the run of the mill requests.However, with many retreat houses closingbecause of costs or lack of personnel,Manresa Spirituality Centre in Pickeringhas become more and more attractive.Our clientele is not merely from Jesuits:who have annual retreats, meeting ofJesuit superiors, meeting of Jesuitapostolates, formation days for Jesuits.We now have requests from other religiousorders like the Redemptorists, the ScarboroughMissionaries, the Spiritans, and the most recent,were the Oblates of Mary Immaculate.Other Christian groups who enjoy the peace andquiet of Manresa have requested time and spaceat Manresa. They appreciate the sacred space ina way that is amazing and edifying to us Catholics.Sometimes as Director, I say to myself, if we couldonly learn from them and follow their wonderfulexample of silence.We have currently the weekend Ignatianretreats. This includes four talks, twoEucharistic celebrations, Reconciliationand Counsellors. He has been a part of Jesuit Retreat Team thatserves the retreatants over the years. However because ofill health, Fr. Shano will not be able to give theRetreat Weekends for which he has been scheduled.These two weekends, are the last in March and the Hirst inApril. Always Free, Page 3 of 7February 2017Issue No. 19The Chalice and PatenThe Chalice Programme: Praying for Vocation.This is a prayer tradition for an increase of vocations to priestly and religious life. Eachweek, one of the families takes a “Chalice and Paten” Set, home. The mandate is to pray forvocations. The family keeps the Chalice and Paten at a central place in the home. Eachmorning or night or both, the family prays for vocation. The “sending forth” of the Chaliceeach week is a solemn and impressive one. It reminds one of Jesus sending his disciples togo and proclaim the good news.The Charismatic Prayer Group meets every week in Fleming Hall. They have taken on theresponsibility to hand over the chalice faithfully each week. Always Free, Page 4 of 7February 2017Issue No. 19Problems Galore Since Manresa Manor and Fleming Hall are both in their 80’s, for as long as they have beenused, problems with the buildings are part and parcel of each weekend, it sometimesseems.However, added to that are the some rambunctious youngsters in the neighbourhood. Overthe Christmas holidays, some of them drove at full speed around the Manor, over the grass,in front of the LaStorta residence, nearly taking down the stone monolith, and Hinally overthe lawn. The marks on the lawn were clearly visible through the snow. Thank God no onewas hurt. We had one death from similar circumstances just outside the front gate in 2009,one serious injury two years ago.Besides that, the dish washing machine apparently blew a gasket. There was a leak in thebasement below. However, Br. Bob assures me there was not major damage. Our tickets have been bought, allthat is left is booking our hotel in Barcelona.-Here we will spend four days of sight seeing and visitingplaces of interest as selected by the group.
