This fact is re-emphasized onDavid Frost's latest offering to television entitled"Headliners." Invariably, the "headliners" of theweek have included some currently successfulsingers like the Bee Gees, Gerry Rafferty or BonnieTyler. The show, which is geared to the gossip -orientedAmerica of 1978, is undeniably a vital showcase formusical artists in the prime time network slot. Froststrives to mix the show with guests from the film, political and musical arenas, with the latter gettingmore and more attention. And another interesting sidelight that does notnecessarily speak well of the world in which we live isNEWSCoin MachineChicagoCAMILLE COMPASIO, Managerthe week's news set to music. This sequence givesthe viewer the hard news of the week in rhymingone-liners that make even the most depressingstory more than palatable. The program has been RSO-dominated, but thenagain so are the charts and box-office figures. Interviews with John Travolta ("Grease" and "SaturdayNight Fever") Olivia Newton -John and the Bee Geesare not out -of -line because these personalities arethe current headliners. The key element of this show is that it providesmass exposure for new artists with successfulmusic. Frost seems to be watching thecharts and wehope he continues to offer musical talent on aweekly basis. Better that than another cops and robbers show.HIGHLIGHTSArt DirectorLINDSAY BOLYARDRCA Records to distribute Salsoul, Roadshow as part of labelCirculationpresident Robert Summer's more aggressive stance for thecompany.Sales of soundtrack albums continuing to expand beyondtraditional levels, paralleling films' box office receipts.Retail store locales seen as increasingly important in currentretail explosion.Motown Records, CTI Records and Grover Washington Jr. settletwo-year legal battle.Chi -Sound Records expected to switch distribution from UnitedArtists Records.Retail price competition in New York City market fierce, lowballing on 7.98 list product on the increase.THERESA TORTOSA. CASH BOX N EWSRCA Adds Salsoul As Part Of'More Aggressive' ApproachLOS ANGELES-Inkeeping with RCARecords president Robert Summer'spromise to make the label "more-RCA TO DISTRIBUTE SALSOULRCA Records and Salsoul Record Corporation concluded an agreement last week whereby RCA will distribute all Salsoul records and tapes.Shown at the signing seated (l -r) are: Joe Cayre, president of Salsoul; and Robert Summer,RCA Records president. Pictured standing (l -r) are: Mel Merman, RCA's division vicepresident of business affairs and associate labels; Bill Staton, RCA's director of nationalR&B promotion; Jack Cayre, father of the Cayre clan; Ken Cayre, senior vice-president ofA&R at Salsoul; Ray Harris, RCA's director of R&B promotion and merchandising; andStanley Cayre, Salsoul's chairman of the board.Mix Of Store Types, LocalesProve Vital To Retail Growthby Aaron FuchsNEW YORKDiversification and-awillingness to mix mall and free-standingstore locations are proving to be importantcharacteristics of the continuing retail explosion. a Cash Box survey of leadingretailers has revealed.Disc Records, a 34-store chain, is aprime example of a mall -oriented chain thathas begun to include free-standing stores.Gary Arnold. Disc's midwest regionalmanager commented, "What you'rereaching now in a lot of cases is a saturationpoint in terms of regional mall development. When the first mall came into a town.it really had a dramatic impact there.Everybody said, 'let's go to the mall' like itwas the eighth wonder of the world. Today, that has worn off. It's been found that a towncan afford to support two or three malls."So now," Arnold continued, "we'd like tocomplement what we already have in thosemarkets with free-standing stores. By doing that we've been able to get larger storesand do a lot of things we haven't been ableto do in mall stores such as staying openlater and in general not having to abide bymall hours.Market ResearchArnold gave another reason for the morefavorable attitude towards free-standingstores. "There's better market research today by record retailers as well as morecooperation between retailer and manufacturer. A manufacturer might give indicatorsto accounts like, 'I think you should set up inthis location, there's good radio here.' "I thinkthis looks like a good crossroad, let's put upa store here."Joe B, essi, vice president of the Stark Camelot chain in Cleveland is another mall oriented retailer who's given more consideration to free-standing stores. Theyare, according to Bressi, the most suitablelocations for the increasingly popularsuper -stores, one of which Stark -Camelot(continued on page 44)aggressive," RCA has announced it will distribute Salsoul Records in the U.S.In addition, RCA is expected this week toconfirm that it has acquired distribution ofRoadshow Records, formerly distributedby United Artists Records.Joe Cayre, president of Salsoul, said ofthe new pact, "We believe in the independent distributor. However, our situation issuch that with a company like RCA wewould only have to deal with one companyinstead of 27 independent distributors."We have good rapport with their peopleand we believe with Bob Summer at thehelm, that company has turned around,"Cayre said. "Morale is high and they arehigh on our product and we thought itwould be very interesting for us to make themove at this time."RCA will distribute Salsoul only in the United States, excluding Puerto Rico, Cayresaid. Salsoul's foreign licensees will be unaffected by the agreement. Cayre also saidthe RCA/Salsoul deal will cause no staffreductions at his label and that, "we stillretain our full identity as a company."It's a good relationship," Cayre added."We have a type of label with product theydon't particularly specialize in. We believewe just fit right in there."Summer said, "This new association is awelcome challenge and most certainly anexpression of great confidence in Salsouland our distribution capability. We lookforward to a mutually profitablerelationship."RCA officially begins distribution ofSalsoul July 1, but Cayre said the firstproduct under the new deal will be shippedMusic -Oriented Movies MeanSoundtrack And Film Successby Joey Berlin-LOS ANGELESWith the RobertStigwood Organization leading the way, arash of music -oriented motion pictures arefinding a receptive audience among moviegoers and record buyers that has sent boxoffice and LP sales figures skyrocketing. The most recent box office totals in Varietyplace "Grease," "Saturday Night Fever"and "Thank God It's Friday" near the top ofits top -grossing films list, while this week'sCash Box Top 100 Albums chart has thesoundtracks to all three movies in the Top10.While the record industry has surpassedthe film industry in total earnings in recentyears, the marriage of the two in the formmusic -oriented films is producing happyresults for all. Producers on both sides arefinding that movies and soundtrack albumsare each other's best promotional tools.'Saturday Night Fever' is the perfectmarriage of music and movies," says AlCoury, president of RSO Records. "Next toJohn Travolta, music was the star of thefilm. 'Saturday Night Fever' is now thebiggest -selling record ever, and with it going to 1,100 additional theatres this summer we're looking for a steady increase insales."'Grease'As successful as "Fever" has been (withbillings above 100 million and recordsales surpassing 14 million units), anotherfilm from Paramount with a soundtrack LPon RSO is currently outpacing its box officeand record sales figures. "Grease," starringJohn Travolta and Olivia Newton -John, hasalready grossed more than 20 million in itsfirst two weeks' billings and the moviesoundtrack, already well over doubleplatinum, is #9 bullet on the Cash Box LPchart. These figures are far above those for"Fever" at a comparable stage."It took a week to 10 days for the successof 'Saturday Night Fever' at the box office toreflect in soundtrack sales," notes Coury."But 'Grease' started selling at an incredible rate immediately after the movie'spremiere.'Two Reasons'"There are two reasons for this," explainsCoury. "John Travolta is now an established star and the picture itself has a(continued on page 44)July 5. The first RCA/Salsoul release willconsist of five singles and four albums. While Roadshow president NickAlberano said "nothing is 9irm right now" ofa Roadshow/RCA distribution agreement, reliable sources indicate the deal will bemade official this week. Richard Mack, former vice president of national promotionfor CBS Records, reportedly will joinRoadshow/RCA in a key position.Salsoul has notified its distributors of thechange, Cayre said, and told them, "we willtake all of our product back if they wish tosend it back. We will give them a check immediately upon receipt of the product. Butthink most of them will probably keep itbecause the price they bought it for is a littlebit less than what they could buy it for nowfrom RCA."Seek New LabelsIShortly before he was appointed RCApresident, Summer said (Cash Box, March18) that the company would more activelyseek out new labels to distribute in musicalareas where the company felt it could useadditional strength. The additions of Salsoul and Roadshowpresumably are designed to increase thelabel's profile in the areas of R&B and discoproduct."Every company has holes," Summersaid at that time. "If you can fill those holesthrough distribution, that's when it trulypays off." He indicated in March that RCAmay also go after labels in the jazz/fusionfield, but would not look for new countrylabels because RCA's existing strength inthat area.CTI, Motown, & ArtistSettle Legal Dispute-Creed Taylor Inc., MotownRecord Corporation, and recording artistGrover Washington Jr. have settled the lawsuits that have been pending between themfor nearly two years.Details of the agreement reached by thethree parties were not made available atpress time. However, Jerry Wagner, president of CTIRecords, Taylor's record company, statedthat CTI no longer had any business affiliation with Motown Records. Wagner also indicated that CTI had no immediate plans tore -hire employees recently laid -off.In addition, Wagner would neither confirm or deny reports that Washington's nextalbum would appear on the Motown label.CTI Records is currently "alive and well"Wagner stated. Further developments inthe situation, he said, would be made publicshortly.NEW YORK-WATCHING TV AT THE ROXYElektra/Asylum recording group Television were recently greeted backstage by Elektra/Asylum officials following its opening night show at theRoxy in Los Angeles.
