JULY 2010The Master Key Systemby Charles F. HaanelHarnessing Your PowerYOU CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE BY CONTROLLINGYOUR MINDQUICK OVERVIEWTo successful businessman Charles F. Haanel, it was simple. What happens in life isa direct result of what takes place inside your mind. So Haanel wrote The Master KeySystem, which was first published in 1912 as a 24-week course, and then four yearslater as a book. Using this system, readers work their way through the chapters, eachof which includes an introduction, dozens of numbered points, and one concreteexercise to master. The Master Key System contained some radical concepts for itstime, including shifting all power from higher deities onto the individual, causing thesystem to be rejected by some churches. It’s not an easy book to read (that’s whereSUCCESS Book Summaries steps in to help!), but during the past 100 years, it hasgarnered a large fan base that claims to have been empowered, freed and set on thepath to success by the system.by Charles F. HaanelCover Shown: Wilder Publications 2007118 pagesSUCCESS PointsThis book will teach youhow to:APPLY AND ACHIEVEWho hasn’t been paralyzed by fear, limited by doubt or frozen by the restrictionsof their own conscious mind? We all have. The problem stems from failing toconnect with our own inner power, the power of our subconscious mind. In TheMaster Key System, Charles F. Haanel takes readers through a step-by-step processto gain control of their bodies and then their minds, so that their destiny belongsexclusively to them. He starts by recommending sitting perfectly still and alone in aroom for 15 minutes and letting your thoughts roam several times each week. Haanelbelieves that only when you have gained control of your physical body are you readyto begin to gain control of your mind. Each chapter builds on these early lessons,as Haanel teaches readers how to gain complete control over their minds, and thusfi nd success. By helping readers train their minds and harness the power of thought,Haanel frees them from many of the restrictions that hold people back and helps set acourse for success. With this new understanding, he says you will be ready to followyour inspirations and chart a course through a world that you see as being full of lifeand beauty, rather than obstacles.Page1SUCCESS.com Secure control of yourphysical body so that youcan learn to control yourthought Mentally and physically letgo so that you can achievemental freedom Use visualization andconcentration Use the power that comesthrough reposeSUCCESS BOOK SUMMARIES

The Master Key SystemOur difficulties are largely due to confused ideasand ignorance of our true interests. The greattask is to discover the laws of nature to whichwe are to adjust ourselves. Clear thinking andmoral insight are, therefore, of incalculable value. The powers, uses and possibilities of the mind under thenew interpretations are incomparably more wonderful thanthe most extravagant accomplishment, or even dreams ofmaterial progress. Thought is energy. Active thought is activeenergy; concentrated thought is concentrated energy. Thoughtconcentrated on a defi nite purpose becomes power. This is thepower which is being used by those who do not believe in thevirtue of poverty, or the beauty of self-denial.REALIZING YOUR MENTALRESOURCESThought is the cause and the experiences with which youmeet in life are the effect. Eliminate, therefore, any possibletendency to complain of conditions as they have been or asthey are, because it rests with you to change them and makethem what you would like them to be.Direct your effort to a realization of the mental resources, always at your command, from which all real and lastingpower comes. Persist in this practice until you come toa realization of the fact that there can be no failure inthe accomplishment of any proper object in life if youbut understand your power and persist. Whereas in thebeginning each function of life and each action is the resultof conscious thought, the habitual actions become automatic, and the thought that controls them passes into the realm ofthe subconscious; yet it is just as intelligent as before. It isnecessary that [the action] become automatic, or subconscious,in order that the subconscious mind may attend to otherthings. The new actions will, however, in their turn, becomehabitual, then automatic, then subconscious in order that themind again may be freed from this detail and advanced to stillother activities. When you realize this, you will have founda source of power which will enable you to take care of anysituation in life which may develop.Page2REVERSING THE PROCESSThis part will show you why what you think, or do, orfeel, is an indication of what you are. Thought is energy, andenergy is power, and it is because all the religions, sciencesand philosophies with which the world has heretofore beenfamiliar have been based upon the manifestation of this energyinstead of the energy itself, that the world has been limited toeffects, while causes have been ignored or misunderstood. TheMaster Key reverses the process; it is interested only in cause, and the letters received from students tell a marvelous story. They indicate conclusively that students are fi nding the causewhereby they may secure for themselves health, harmony, abundance, and whatever else may be necessary for theirwelfare and happiness. Life is expressive and it is our businessto express ourselves harmoniously and constructively. Sorrow, misery, unhappiness, disease and poverty are not necessitiesand we are constantly eliminating them. But this process ofeliminating consists in rising above and beyond limitation ofany kind.THE CREATIVE MINDAfter studying this part carefully, you will see that everyconceivable force or object or fact is the result of mind inaction. Mind in action is thought, and thought is creative.Men are thinking now as they never thought before. Matteris powerless, passive, inert. Mind is force, energy, power.Mind shapes and controls matter. Every form which mattertakes is but the expression of some preexisting thought. Butthought works no magic transformations; it obeys natural laws;it sets in motion natural forces; it releases natural energies; itmanifests in your conduct and actions, and these in turn reactupon your friends and acquaintances, and eventually upon thewhole of your environment.THE BRAIN OF MANThe knowledge that if we infringe upon the rights of others,we become moral thorns and fi nd ourselves entangled atevery turn of the road, should be an indication that successis contingent upon the highest moral idea, which is “Thegreatest good to the greatest number.” Aspiration, desire andharmonious relations constantly and persistently maintainedSUCCESS.comSUCCESS BOOK SUMMARIES

The Master Key SystemThe Power of AffirmationsAffirmations and Your MindIf you wish to change conditions, you must changeyourself. Your whims, your wishes, your fancies, yourambitions may be thwarted at every step, but yourinmost thoughts will find expression just as certainlyas the plant springs from the seed. Suppose, then,we desire to change conditions. How are we to bringthis about? The reply is simple: By the law of growth. Cause and effect are as absolute and undeviatingin the hidden realm of thought as in the world ofmaterial things. Hold in mind the condition desired; affirm it asan already existing fact. This indicates the valueof a powerful affirmation. By constant repetitionit becomes a part of ourselves. We are actuallychanging ourselves; we are making ourselveswhat we want to be. Character is not a thing of chance, but it isthe result of continued effort. If you are timid, vacillating, self-conscious, or if you are overanxious or harassed by thoughts of fear orimpending danger, remember that it is axiomaticthat “two things cannot exist in the same place atthe same time.” Exactly the same thing is true in the mental andspiritual world; so that your remedy is plainlyto substitute thoughts of courage, power, selfreliance and confidence, for those of fear, lackand limitation. The easiest and most natural wayto do this is to select an affirmation which seemsto fit your particular case. The positive thought willdestroy the negative as certainly as light destroysdarkness, and the results will be just as effectual. Action is the blossom of thought, and conditionsare the result of action so that you constantly havein your possession the tools by which you willcertainly and inevitably make or unmake yourself, and joy or suffering will be the reward.Page3will accomplish results. The greatest hindrance is erroneousand fi xed ideas. To be in tune with eternal truth we mustpossess poise and harmony within. In order to receiveintelligence the receiver must be in tune with the transmitter.Thought is a product of Mind, and Mind is creative, butthis does not mean that the Universal will change its modusoperandi to suit us or our ideas, but it does mean that wecan come into harmonious relationship with the Universal, and when we have accomplished this we may ask anything towhich we are entitled, and the way will be made plain. The personal, or conscious, has the power of will andchoice, and can therefore exercise discrimination in theselection of methods whereby to bring about the solutionof difficulties. The impersonal, or spiritual, being a part orone with the source and origin of all power, can necessarilyexercise no such choice, but, on the contrary, it has Infi niteresources at its command. It can and does bring about resultsby methods concerning which the human or individual mindcan have no possible conception.THOUGHT AND ITS RESULTSIn this Part you will fi nd that you may freely choose whatyou think, but the result of your thought is governed by allimmutable law! Is not this a wonderful thought? Is it notwonderful to know that our lives are not subject to caprice orvariability of any kind? That they are governed by law. Thisstability is our opportunity, because by complying with thelaw we can secure the desired effect with invariable precision. Here, then, is the secret of the origin of both good and evil;this is all the good and evil there ever was or ever will be.Thought results in action. If your thought is constructiveand harmonious, the result will be good; if your thought isdestructive or inharmonious, the result will be evil. There istherefore but one law, one principle, one cause, one Source ofPower, and good and evil are simply words which have beencoined to indicate the result of our action, or our complianceor noncompliance with this law.A CERTAIN DEFINITE CAUSENothing happens with out a defi nite cause. knowledge. You will know how to control any situation bybringing adequate causes into play. When you win, as you will, you will know exactly why.The ordinary man, who has no defi nite knowledge of causeand effect, is governed by his feeling or emotions. He thinkschiefly to justify his action. He never thinks his problemthrough to the end. In short, he does not know that every effectis the result of a certain defi nite cause, but he seeks to consolehimself with explanations and excuses. He thinks only in selfdefense. On the contrary, the man who understands that thereis no effect without an adequate cause thinks impersonally. Hesees the issue clear to the end and he meets the requirementsfully and fairly, and the result is that the world gives him all thatit has to give in friendship, honor, love and approval.INDUCTIVE REASONING AND THEOBJECTIVE MINDYour life is governed by law—by actual, immutable principlesthat never vary. Law is in operation at all times in all places.Fixed laws underlie all human actions. For this reason, men whocontrol giant industries are enabled to determine with absoluteprecision just what percentage of every hundred thousandpeople will respond to any given set of conditions. It is well, however, to remember that while every effect isthe result of a cause, the effect in turn becomes a cause, whichcreates other effects, which in turn create still other causes; sothat when you put the law of attraction into operation you mustremember that you are starting a train of causation for good orotherwise which may have endless possibilities.THE POWER OF CONCENTRATIONIf you concentrate upon the thoughts given, if you give themyour entire attention, you will fi nd a world of meaning in eachsentence and will attract to yourself other thoughts in harmonywith them, and you will soon grasp the full significanceof the vital knowledge upon which you are concentrating.Knowledge does not apply itself; we as individuals must makethe application, and the application consists in fertilizing thethought with a living purpose.Page4THE DREAMS OF THE DREAMERPhysical science is responsible for the marvelous age ofinvention in which we are now living, but spiritual scienceis now setting out on a career whose possibilities no onecan foretell.Spiritual science has heretofore been the football of theuneducated, the superstitious, the mystical, but men are nowinterested in defi nite methods and demonstrated facts only.We have come to know that thinking is a spiritual process, that vision and imagination precede action and event—that theday of the dreamer has come.THE CREATIVE POWER OF THOUGHTYou have found from your study thus far that thought is aspiritual activity and is therefore endowed with creative power. This does not mean that some thought is creative, but that allthought is creative. This same principle can be brought intooperation in a negative way through the process of denial. The conscious and subconscious are but two phases of actionin connection with one mind. The relation of the subconsciousto the conscious is quite analogous to that existing betweena weather vane and the atmosphere. Just as the least pressureof the atmosphere causes an action on the part of the weathervane, so does the least thought entertained by the consciousmind produce within your subconscious mind action in exactproportion to the depth of feeling characterizing the thoughtand the intensity with which the thought is indulged.GAINING SPIRITUALUNDERSTANDINGEverything that lives has periods of birth, growth, fruitageand decline. These periods are governed by the SeptimalLaw. The Law of Sevens governs the days of the week, thephases of the moon, the harmonies of sound, light, heat, electricity, magnetism, atomic structure. It governs the life ofindividuals and of nations, and it dominates the activities of thecommercial world.Life is growth and growth is change. Each seven-yearperiod takes us into a new cycle. The fi rst seven years is theperiod of infancy. The next seven the period of childhood, representing the beginning of individual responsibility. TheSUCCESS.comSUCCESS BOOK SUMMARIES

The Master Key SystemThought concentratedon a definite purposebecomes power.next seven represents the period of adolescence. The fourthperiod marks the attainment of full growth. The fi fth period isthe constructive period, when men begin to acquire property, possessions, a home and family. The next from 35 to 42, is aperiod of reactions and changes, and this in turn is followed bya period of reconstruction, adjustment and recuperation, so asto be ready for a new cycle of sevens, beginning with the fi ftiethyear. Those familiar with these cycles will not be disturbedwhen things seem to go wrong, but can apply the principleoutlined in these lessons with the full assurance that a higherlaw will invariably control all other laws, and that through anunderstanding and conscious operation of spiritual laws, we canconvert every seeming difficulty into a blessing.SYMBOLS AND REALITYThe kind of Deity which a man, consciously or unconsciously, worships indicates the intellectual status of the worshipper. Weof the twentieth century worship a God of Love in theory butin practice we make for ourselves “graven images” of “Wealth,”“Power,” “Fashion,” “Custom,” and “Conventionality.” We “falldown” before them and worship them. We concentrate on themand they are thereby externalized in our lives.THE LAW OF ATTRACTIONIn order to grow we must obtain what is necessary for ourgrowth. This is brought about through the law of attraction. This principle is the sole means by which the individual isdifferentiated from the Universal. Think for a moment. Whatwould a man be if he were not a husband, a father or a brother;if he were not interested in the social, economical, political orreligious world? He would be nothing but an abstract theoreticalego. He exists, therefore, only in his relation to the whole, inhis relation to other men, in his relation to society. This relationconstitutes his environment. He exists therefore in his relationPage5to his environment and in no other way. It is evident, therefore, that the individual is simply the differentiation of the oneUniversal Mind “which lighteth every man that cometh into theworld,” and his so-called individuality or personality consists ofnothing but the manner in which he relates with the whole.YOUR MENTAL FOODFear is a powerful form of thought. It paralyzes the nervecenters, thus affecting the circulation of the blood. This, inturn, paralyzes the muscular system, so that fear affects theentire being—body, brain and nerve, physical, mental, andmuscular. Of course, the way to overcome fear is to becomeconscious of power. What is this mysterious vital force whichwe call power? We do not know; neither do we know whatelectricity is. But we do know that by conforming to therequirements of the law by which electricity is governed, it willbe our obedient servant; that it will light our homes, our cities, run our machinery and serve us in many useful capacities. Andso it is with vital force. Although we do not know what it is, andpossibly may never know, we do know that it is a primary forcewhich manifests through living bodies, and that by complyingwith the laws and principles by which it is governed we canopen ourselves to a more abundant inflow of this vital energy, and thus express the highest possible degree of mental, moraland spiritual efficiency.TO THINK BIG THOUGHTSWe know that the universe is governed by law; that for everyeffect there must be a cause; and that the same cause, underthe same conditions, will invariably produce the same effect.Consequently, if prayer has ever been answered, it will alwaysbe answered if the proper conditions are complied with. Thismust necessarily be true. Otherwise, the universe would be achaos instead of a cosmos. The answer to prayer is thereforesubject to law and this law is defi nite, exact, and scientific, just as are the laws governing gravitation and electricity. Anunderstanding of this law takes the foundation of Christianityout of the realm of superstition and credulity and places it uponthe fi rm rock of scientific understanding. But, unfortunately, there are comparatively few persons who know how to pray.SUCCESS.comSUCCESS BOOK SUMMARIES

The Master Key SystemThey understand that there are laws governing electricity, mathematics and chemistry, but, for some inexplicable reason,it never seems to occur to them that there are also spirituallaws and that these laws are also defi nite, scientific, exact andoperate with immutable precision.THE LAW OF SUCCESS IS SERVICEYou will fi nd that money weaves itself into the entire fabricof our very existence; that the law of success is service; thatwe get what we give and for this reason we should consider it agreat privilege to be able to give. We have found that thoughtis the creative activity behind every constructive enterprise. We can therefore give nothing of more practical value thanour thought.Creative thought requires attention, and the power ofattention is, as we have found, the weapon of the Super-man.Attention develops concentration, and concentration developsSpiritual
