Hope Lutheran Church: a Community of Faith in the Heart of Fond du LacThe Most Amazing Mirror in the WorldMost people look at themselves in a mirror morethan 20 times a day. The apostle James hassomething to say about this habit. In the book that bears his name, James the halfbrother of Jesus, makes an interesting and perceptivecomparison. The points of reference are two types ofpeople. James says: “For if any are hearers of the wordand not doers, they are like those who look atthemselves in a mirror; for they look at themselves and,on going away, immediately forget what they were like. But those who look into the perfect law, the law ofliberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget butdoers who act — they will be blessed in their doing” (vv.23-25).The operative word in this reading is “mirror.” Andsince James pins his point on this word, hoping we willunderstand the metaphor, let’s start there.Studies show that people checkthe mirror upwards of 40 times aday. For some, looking in a mirroris simply a matter of gatheringdata; for others, it’s to confirm theworst. To this end, we can alwaysfind a mirror, and perhaps that’swhy we take mirrors for granted. We use them for practicalpurposes and for décor. Whendriving, good drivers check theirside mirrors and rearview mirrorsfor safety reasons. We usemirrors to reflect light. And weuse mirrors to see how we look before others see us.Our mirrors might be full-frame, wall-mounted, selfsupported or full-length. They might be square, rectangular, oval, circular or trapezoid. But what about the mirror that the apostle James used2,000 years ago? It certainly was not a piece of glasscoated with silver nitrate. James might have beenaware that the Romans were experimenting with theuse of glass in the first century, but his mirror wasprobably a piece of polished bronze or copper.Whatever it was, there’s no doubt that his readersknew what a mirror was.Mirrors had been around long before James wrote hisletter to the Christians. Artifacts dating to 6,000 B.C.tell us that the early communities used polished stonesas mirrors before going to their equivalent ofWalmart. The simplest mirror is water, as Narcissus in Greekmythology discovered. Nature lovers are thrilled when,in the early morning hours, they come across awoodland pond or alpine lake that is as still as glass, reflecting the pines and mountains above the clearwater. What would you do if you stumbled on a scenelike this? You’d whip out your smartphone, take aphoto and post it on Instagram. That’s what you woulddo. It’s that spectacular! The largest natural mirror isSalar de Uyuni. At 4,000square miles, it is the world’slargest salt flat, about 100times bigger than theBonneville Salt Flats of Utah. And when water from themountains floods this plain, thesky seems to join the earth inan impression of infinity.Amazing, isn’t it?The Amazing MirrorThe most amazing mirror is the word of God. But whyis it so incredible? It’s amazing because it’s perfect.(Continued on page 2)

(Continued from page 1)The apostle James calls it “perfect”. It is perfect inthree ways:1. It is God’s law. Humans may pass bad laws, andwe can all think of a few. This amazing “mirror,”however, is the “perfect law” because it comesfrom God.2. It cannot be bettered. This law comes from God!Who would be so silly as to write another lawthat supersedes the law of God? This is as goodas it gets, and it can’t get better. In fact, it is thelaw of “liberty” or freedom. Following this law,one is truly free. And liberty is what we all want,is it not?3. It is directed toward an end. That is the basicmeaning. A jar designed to hold a pint of milk isperfect insofar as it holds the milk! No cracks orleaks. God’s law is perfect because its goal, endor purpose is to fashion vessels of perfectionwho are what they are designed to be (the imageof God) and who do what they are designed todo (reflect the glory of God), put God on display. But if you look into this amazing mirror and walkaway, that’s not going to happen, is it?It’s amazing because it’s a mirror that makes us talk.Have you noticed this? We tend to talk to mirrors, orto our doppelganger in the mirror. Happens all thetime: You get up in the morning. You have sleep linesetched in your face like you slept all night on a waffleiron. Your hair looks like it has been supercharged with500 volts of electricity. And those bags under youreyes look like they’ve just come off the baggage claimat LAX. You stand in front of the mirror and take alook. “Oh, my goodness! That can’t be right!”Yes, we talk to mirrors. The wicked witch says, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?” Andthe mirror is, like: “Have you seen yourself thismorning?”It’s amazing because we must lean into the mirror to seebetter. As the late, great Yogi Berra, catcher and thenmanager of the New York Yankees, used to say: “Youcan see a lot by looking.” Yes, you can. That’s why weoften lean toward the mirror to get a better look atourselves. The word, “mirror” which James uses, doesn’t refer to a casual glance. Instead, it2Hope Lutheran Church Newsletter Life @ Hopeimplies bending over, or stooping, to get a better, perhaps the best look. Here are a couple of verseswhere the same word is used:· “But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stoopingand looking in, he saw the linen cloths bythemselves; then he went home, amazed at whathad happened” (Luke 24:12).· “He bent down to look in and saw the linenwrappings lying there, but he did not go in” (John20:5).True practitioners of God’s word are those whohumble themselves, who are on their knees in anattitude of contrition and repentance, who bend to thewill of God and are obedient. Finally, it’s an amazing mirror because it’s a two-waymirror, and God is on the other side!God knows the thoughts and intents of the heart.· “And God, who knows the human heart ” (Acts15:8).· “But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look on hisappearance or on the height of his stature, forthe Lord does not see as mortals see; they look onthe outward appearance, but the Lord looks onthe heart.’” (1 Samuel 16:7).· “Would not God discover this? For he knows thesecrets of the heart” (Psalm 44:21).And then there is this telling passage in Jeremiah: “Theheart is devious above all else; it is perverse — whocan understand it?” The answer comes quickly: “I theLord test the mind and search the heart, to give to allaccording to their ways, according to the fruit of theirdoings” (17:9-10).The word of God is perfect because when we standbefore the “perfect law” of God, we’re reallystanding before God himself, who sees us as through atwo-way mirror, and God sees all.We become better versions of ourselves and the worldbecomes a better place when we look into God’smirror — the perfect law — and act on what we see.James alludes to looking in the mirror when heapplauds those who are able to bridle the tongue. Herefers to acting on what we see when he argues that aChristian who takes care of orphans and widows indistress is a practitioner of “true religion.”(Continued on page 3)

I would like to use thisarticle to give you anupdate on our Missionariesthat we are supporting. Asyou may recall, we votedto support Rev Dr. Fungand his family in Thailand, and Rev Dr. Bombaro andhis family serving in Eurasia. I am pleased to let youknow that we are almost at our goal of 15,000. Atthe time of this printing, we have raised a total of 12,600. We are almost there! Please considerdonating to this great cause and help us reach ourgoal! To those of you that have donated already, thank you very much! Matthew 28:19 “Therefore goand make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in thename of the Father and of the Son and of the HolySpirit ”I would also like to take this opportunity to remindyou of our new Mission Statement. I have writtenabout this in the past, but I felt that it was importantthat I share it with you one more time.Grow in grace and knowledge of ChristGrow in grace and knowledge of your Lord andSavior Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 3:18Show love to God and othersLove the Lord your God with all your heart and withall your soul and with all your mind and with all yourstrength; and love your neighbor as yourself. There isno greater commandment greater that these. Mark12:30-31Share the Gospel with each other and in ourcommunityLet your light so shine before others, that they maysee your good works, and glorify your Father which isin heaven. Matthew 5:16Care for those weary and worn from lifeCarry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you willfulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2I look forward to seeingyou at church and aroundthe campus!Deacon, Bob MengertAs members of Hope Lutheran Church, united by theHoly Spirit, and brought together by God’s plan andpurpose, we exist to: Grow, Show, Share, and Care.(Continued from page 2)This is our call to action: let us look into the mirror, and let us act on what we see. When we do, we willbe better for it, and so will our neighborhoods, communities and our part of the world. Like Salarde Uyuni, where heaven meets earth in the water’sreflection, God’s word is a mirror that elevates us tothe “thin space” twixt heaven and earth, wheremortals like us experience what James calls abeatific condition:“They will beblessed in theirdoing” (v. 25).PastorPhillip M. During this time, not only werehymns and liturgies composed, but also great works of sacred music which are still in use in the church today. Some of these are listed belowDietrich BuxtehudeAntonio VivaldiJ.S. Here is a simple prayer idea sung to the tuneof “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”:Faith Mentoring is part of the Catechism program atHope Lutheran Church. Catechism students pair withadult mentors who will discuss faith/life issues withthem during four Sundays of the 2021-2022 schoolyear on Mentor Sundays. Faith Mentors do not takethe place of parents, pastors, teachers, or peers, butprovide one additional connecting point to thecommunity of faith. Most Faith Mentors are ordinarypeople who play important roles in the growth of ayoung person’s faith. Faith Mentors are specialpeople. They offer trust and respect; they arehonored to participate in another person’s faithjourney.Thank you, God for food and prayer.Teach us how to love and share. PRESCHOOL and 4KThe 2021-2022 school yearis off to a great start! Our4K program has 24 studentsand our 3P program has 14students. The 3P programhas grown, and we now haveMonday/Wednesdaymorning and afternoonclasses running!Besides the new faces of ourstudents, we also have newteachers. Ashley Carus is thenew lead teacher for the 4Kprogram, and she has twonew assistants. Tina Uttendorfer is the new morningassistant, and Tammie Hanks is the new afternoonassistant. They are all enjoying teaching and workingwith the children. Stephanie Neff is our veteran of thegroup and returns for another year teaching in the 3Pprogram. We shared information about Ashley andStephanie in our August newsletter, and would like tointroduce our two newest staff members.Tina, her husband and four kids live in Oakfield andrun a grain farm. She is an assistant teacher in herdaughter’s religious education classes. She earnedAn Opportunity to ServeIn our September newsletter, we briefly talked aboutthis being the time of year when we give a littleattention to the opportunity for our members to serveon one of our nine boards. Also mentioned was thequestion, “What do boards do?” There is now a smallpamphlet available providing somewhat brief boardjob descriptions along with contact information shouldyou find this to be of interest. You’ll find this on oneof the small tables located on each side as you enterthe worship area. It can also be found in theinformation rack outside the church office. There is often reluctance to get involved in this kind ofactivity feeling that we don’t have the talent or thetime. While a particular talent is much appreciatedand certainly of great value, a willingness to serve isperhaps more important. Most boards have people6Hope Lutheran Church Newsletter Life @ Hopeher substitute teaching licenselast year and taught in theOakfield School District. Sheis very excited to learn andgrow with the students thisschool year.Tammie tells us that she LOVEschildren. They bring so muchjoy and happiness! She lives in Fond du Lac with herhusband of 27 years. Her adult children live in Fonddu Lac and Arizona. Tammie also shares her homewith two goofy golden retrievers and two chubbycats. She enjoys gardening, camping, crafting, andlistening to podcasts and good books. Tammie feelsso thankful and blessed to be a part of yourchildren’s education.Deacon/Preschool Director, Bob Mengertwho have knowledge and experience from which youcan learn. We live in a busy world and most of us value andguard our free time very carefully. We don’t want tobe tied down any more than is necessary. What israther amazing is the fact that some of our busiestpeople are also our most frequent volunteers. Havingsaid that, it is understood that some people really dohave very little spare time. Each person has to decide how they will use whatevertime is available to them. We simply ask that youwould prayerfully consider how you might offerservice to our Lord and our church with whatever youbring to the table, whether you are asked to serve oryou’re volunteering. The opportunities go far beyondbeing on a board and we will try to make you awareof those opportunities in future articles.

If λ1 6 λ2, Wλ 1 would not be called a strong mirror for Xλ 2, although they would be an usual weak mirror pair.
