From the EditorsTheWeek of August29, 2005Online: www.scu.edu/law/resources/grapevine.htmlWelcome back! Wehope you survived your firsttwo weeks. For all thosefirst years out there, we’reliving proof that people dosurvive! As your SBA cosecretaries, we would like topersonally introduce ourselves. Both of your secretaries this year hail fromsmall towns in the Midwest(Kansas and Minnesota), sowe know what coldREALLY feels like! Jenniferwas excited to see two people here from K-State,where she attended classesfor a few years. Althoughnone of Sandra’s fellowBoston College alum areentering SCU this year, there are some other EastCoasters. So if you’re fromoutside of sunny Californiaand want to reminisceabout your hometown, chances are that we canrelate! We don’t claim to possess unlimited wisdom, butwe would like to share a fewthoughts about the bestparts of law school, basedupon our personal experiences.First, the people youmeet here make schoolworthwhile. As many 2Lsand 3Ls will attest, yourfriends, colleagues, andprofessors all make lifemuch more bearable.Whether you’re making alifelong best friend, casuallyenjoying a conversationwith a classmate, or evengetting to know your professors during their officehours, each of these relationships are forming a network upon which a successful legal career can be built.Value the thoughts, experiences, and guidance fromThe Grapevine is published weekly by the Student Bar Associationfor the Santa Clara School of Law students, faculty, administration, andcommunity. The Grapevine strives to be an accessible resource for SBA information, campus activity, and student life. Please send event information, article submissions and advertisements to:scugrapevine@gmail.com by Fridays at 8:00 a.m. Submissionsmay be altered or edited to fit layout space constraints.Copyright 2005-2006 SCU SBAPage 2students and faculty alike. This allows us to have astrong community that weall take pride in. Hey, freeadvice is probably the onlyinexpensive part of lawschool!Next, while we spendmuch of our time in theclassroom, it’s nice to seethe connection betweenlegal studies and real life.Granted, the Rule AgainstPerpetuities may nevercome up in your day-to-daylife, but there are manyother opportunities to seethe correlation betweentheory and practice. Activities such as interning, volunteering, or working at aclinic for school credit areexamples of some opportunities in which we can useour education to benefitorganizations and the community. Finally, law school is abusy time for any student. We know this may seemlike an overwhelming taskthat we’ve all taken on: balancing a rigorous course ofstudy with outside commitments (families, children, relationships, work, etc.).However, this makes usappreciate our personaltime all the more. Make aneffort to really enjoy thepeople and activities in yourlife outside of law school, because those are the thingsthat keep us happy andhealthy, and thus will makeus better lawyers at the endof the day.We look forward toworking with everyone thisyear. Please don't hesitateto contact us at scugrapevine@gmail.com if youhave any questions, comments, or suggestions. Havea great week!Jennifer and Sandy

“Heard in Bannan” — Student Submissions PageSend article contributions, letters to the editor, top fives, personals, and classified to scugrapevine@gmail.com.The Grapevine strives to provide an accessible weekly publication for students to express themselves.“I disagree with what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it” - VoltaireHey folks happy third week of law school. Unlike last week you probably won’t get fat off of Ben andJerry’s thanks to Lexis Nexis, but there is going to be a great social event this Thursday as you will no doubthear about. You might notice the top 10 list has been parsed down to a top 6. Mostly this is because I felt top10’s are too cliché. No doubt many of you are thinking “Why did I come to law school?” right about now. Don’tworry to all you 1L’s, I am still actually having that same thought as a third year.Hopefully you have found out that there is life outside of Heafey and Bannan! If not, don’t worry The O.C.season premiere is just around the corner on September 8th. But if you can’t wait until then, you can catch thereal life drama of high school hotties on Laguna Beach every Monday night at 10 on MTV. Check it out! Also, sad news for all you Brad and Jen fans, the divorce is nearing its final stages. Well, that’s all I got!Top 6 Reasons You Might Not Be Cut Out For Law School 6.5.4.3.2.You’ve already been called out by your professor for not doing the reading. You signed up for DLSA (Drunk Law Students Association) at Club Day.You realized in Legal Pro that you already might not get admitted to the bar.You plan on patterning yourself after Elle Woods. You skipped your Friday classes because you had too much fun at theBeginning of the Year Party.1. You live in Apartment #3 at University Square just kidding! Happy 24th Joe!Peace out!DevinANNUAL ABA MEETINGRoy Stanley, Ankita Patel, & Herbert HaydenHope you all have had a good start to the school year! As for myself, although a bit tired with school already, I am excited about the great SBAand ABA events planned for the semester ahead. This summer, RoyStanley (your SBA president), Herbert Hayden (your SBA treasurer), andI (one of your five lovely SBA-ABA reps) had the opportunity to attendthe Annual ABA meeting in Chicago from August 4-7th. Not only did weget a chance to mingle with some of the nation’s best attorney, judges, and practitioners, but we also got to hang out with fellow law studentsacross the country. We were able to exchange ideas about different programs and events we have at our respective schools and were also able to build atighter network with other Northern California law schools. As the ABA Law Student Division representative, I was able to vote on a number of initiatives that affect the law school and our profession. Amongst the issues was an initiative to increase diversity at law schools, a proposal for lower calling rates in prisons, anddiscussion of law that permit insurers to deny coverage in accident and sickness insurance policies for alcohol or drug related injuries. Soon you will be able to read aboutthese issues and more on the ABA/LSD website. Finally, I also had the opportunity to attend a training session for ABA reps. I was able to learnof many opportunities available to students through the ABA such as the ability to participatein ABA competitions, networking events, volunteer work and more. I highly encourage you tosign up to take advantage of the benefits! Go to www.abanet.org/newstudent to join and for acomplete list of benefits. That’s it for now, but stay tuned for updates from your ABA reps. Enjoy these next few weeks before outlining madness begins!- Ankita Patel, SBA-ABA RepPage 3
