BodyPortal gaugeAs is the case with the A4 Saloon, use is madefor the A4 Cabriolet of the alignment bracketset VAS 6042 in combination with VAS 6042/1.In addition to the familiar portal gaugeVAS 5007, the alignment bracket accessoryVAS 5007/12 is also required for theA4 Cabriolet.278 005278 0066

The following mounting points are set:– Left/right convertible top latch atwindscreen frame– A-pillar– B-pillar striker plate mount– Left/right convertible top main bearingsupportCorrect positioning of the mounting points onthe body ensures ideal convertible topgeometry.278 0077

BodyVehicle safetyOne of the main aims when developing thenew A4 Cabriolet was to match theacknowledged high standards of vehicle safetyalready achieved by the Audi A4.This involved the incorporation of a wide rangeof safety features in addition to body shellmodifications specific to convertible models.Full-size driver's and frontpassenger's airbagSafety steering columnand pedal cluster8Head/thoraxside airbag

BodyThe rigidity of the A-pillars is a particularlyimportant factor with regard to occupantsafety in the event of vehicle rollover. Use hastherefore been made in the A4 Cabriolet ofhigh-strength tubular bracing in addition tooptimising the entire A-pillar structure.278 033Thanks to optimisation of their cross sectionsand wall thicknesses in conjunction with theuse of high-strength panels, the sills play animportant part in increasing body rigidity andvehicle safety.278 03610

The transverse rigidity of the vehicle and thusalso safety in the event of side impact areenhanced by the additional high-strengthtubular elements of the rear seat crossmember.278 037Following a serious accident (rollover as wellas head-on, side and rear-end impact), thetwo rollover bars are actuated by the controlunit and moved into safety positionin a fraction of a second by releasing the pretensioned springs. This, together with the A-pillars, creates asafety zone for the vehicle occupants.Pre-tensionedspringSolenoidoperated switchwith actuationmechanism278 038The back panel between rear seat andconvertible top compartment is reinforcedand of double-wall design. This further improves the rigidity of the body.278 03911

BodyVibration dampingThe new A4 Cabriolet combines sportyvehicle dynamics with outstanding vibrationdamping characteristics. The rigid attachment of the front subframe, diagonalbracing in the rear body structure and an extremelyrobust sill panel linking the front and rear ends of thevehicle all add to its overall strength.12

Coordination of axle and mechanical unit vibrationwith the body ensures that mechanical unit andrunning gear mountings are ideally designed toprovide vibration damping.A module cross member additionally connected tothe body and precisely dimensioned steeringcolumn attachment ensure that steering wheeljudder caused by the road surface is kept to aminimum. All this in conjunction with the previouslymentioned reinforcing measures for convertiblemodels results in a spaceframe-type structure. The level of torsional rigidity is thus more thandouble that of the predecessor model.278 04013

Convertible topConvertible top designEven at first glance it becomes apparent thatthe convertible top is designed to fulfill themost exacting demands of everyday drivingand winter conditions. The convertible top fabric is made ofparticularly easy-care material and does nothave to be treated with impregnating agentor the like. The structure of the convertible top takes theform of a triple layer of fabric on the outside,a 15 mm thick insulating mat and a separateinner headliner. The fabric is mechanically attached by meansof fastening strips and sections to the frontend of the convertible top, as well as to roofframe, bracing hoops and convertible topframe. This efficient fastening system (theconvertible top is latched, clipped, rivetedand bolted) guarantees ease of repair andservice work.Convertible topfabric withintegrated rearwindowBy its nature, this design ensures not onlysimple removal and installation, but also ahigh level of reliability and durability. The rear window is made of mineral glasssuitable for heating.Roof guide element 1AluminiumSteel14278 010

The highest standards are also set in terms ofmechanical rigidity and perfect opticalintegration into the appearance of the vehicleas a whole.By combining aluminium and steel, thedesign of the convertible top linkagerepresents an ideal compromise betweenextreme rigidity and a minimal weight of onlyapprox. 30 kg.The aluminium fastening sections permitstraightforward removal and installation ofthe individual convertible top components.Convertible topcompartment lid278 009The convertible top fabric is zipped directly tothe intermediate layer (insulating mat) andthus indirectly to the bracing hoops. This keeps the so-called ballooning effect to aminimum. All these items combine to ensure theharmonious integration of the roof line intothe Cabriolet design throughout the entirespeed range.Bracing hoop 1Front bracing hoopBracing hoop 2Bracing hoop 3Bracing hoop 4Bracing hoop 5Roof guideelement 2Convertible topframeMain guideelementMain supportConvertible topcompartment lid latch278 00815

Convenience opening and closing of automaticconvertible topThe automatic convertible top can also beopened or closed by inserting the vehicle keyin the driver's door lock.Opening and closing are interruptedimmediately on releasing the key.For safety reasons, actuation of the automaticconvertible top by way of the key remotecontrol function is not possible.Convenience opening:– Turn key once into opening position (1).– Within two seconds, turn key a secondtime into opening position (2) and hold keyin this position until convertible top is fullyopen.278 031If vehicles are fitted with an anti-theftalarm, release button on key has to bepressed first to unlock the vehicle.278 029Convenience closing:– Turn key once into closing position (1).– Within two seconds, turn key a secondtime into closing position (2) and hold keyin this position until convertible top is fullyclosed.278 03021

Convertible topEmergency actuationIn the event of a malfunction, the automaticconvertible top can also be closed manually.Such manual closing should however only beemployed in emergency situations. The following prerequisites have to befulfilled to permit emergency actuation of theautomatic convertible top:– Vehicle stationary - handbrake applied– Windows open– Ignition key removedFull emergency actuation of the automaticconvertible top essentially comprises thefollowing steps:––––Release of compartment lidRaising of convertible topLocking of compartment lidLatching of convertible topThe boot lid must be closed when theconvertible top compartment lid isreleased so as not to damage eithercomponent.Emergency release keyEmergency closing of the convertible toprequires the use of an emergency release key. This is located behind the fuse box cover in aseparate compartment. The emergency release key has the followingfunctions:– Locking and release of convertible topcompartment lid– Latching and release of convertible top inwindscreen frame278 04122

Releasing convertible top compartment lidThe first step is to move the emergencyrelease key into its operating position. This involves turning the red handle anticlockwise as far as it will go.278 051The release system for the convertible topcompartment lid is located behind the centresection of the rear seat backrest. For release purposes, this section has to beremoved and the emergency release keyinserted in the opening provided. The guidelugs must be felt to engage in the slots. Then give the whole emergency release key aquarter of a clockwise turn to fix it inpreliminary position.278 04223

Convertible topTurn red handle of emergency release keyclockwise until it is heard to engage. Thenturn whole emergency release key anticlockwise as far as it will go and leave it inthis position. This causes the convertibletop compartment lid to be released andlifted out of its locks. If stiff, the force required for release can bereduced by pressing on the convertible topcompartment lid.Raise the convertible top compartment lidmanually as far as its end stop, taking carenot to grasp hold of the covers for therollover bars. The lid will remainunsupported in this position.278 043If the convertible top compartmentlid is not raised as far as it will go onboth sides it could drop down again, causing damage to the vehicle orinjury to people in the vicinity.Raising convertible topLift convertible top out of convertible top trayand raise it.278 04824

Closing convertible top compartmentRaise convertible top frame until it is vertical. The frame will remain unsupported in this position. Then close convertible top compartment lid again until it is resting on locks. At this point the convertible top compartment lid cannot yet be completely closed - a gapremains between the lid and the body.Locking convertible top compartment lidTurn the whole emergency release keyclockwise as far as it will go.This automatically lowers and locks theconvertible top compartment lid.278 044Removing emergency release keyTurn the red handle of the emergency releasekey anti-clockwise as far as it will go.Then turn the whole emergency release keyanti-clockwise and pull it out downwards, thus locking the convertible top compartmentlid.278 04925

Convertible topClosing and latching convertible topPosition front bracing hoop on roof frame. The emergency release key must be movedinto its operating position beforehand. This involves turning the red handle anticlockwise as far as it will go.278 051The opening for the roof frame releasesystem is located in the centre of theconvertible top behind a small trim cap, which has to be removed first. The vehicle key can be used for this purpose. For latching purposes, the emergency releasekey is to be inserted in the opening such thatthe guide lugs are felt to engage in the slotsprovided. Then give the whole emergency release key aquarter of a clockwise turn. This fixes theemergency release key in its preliminaryposition and stops it dropping out of the locksystem.278 04526

Turn red handle of emergency release keyclockwise until it is heard to engage.Turn the whole emergency release keyclockwise as far as it will go.This opens the convertible top locks and theconvertible top is raised slightly.278 047Use the emergency release key to pull the convertible top downwards and turn the key anticlockwise as far as it will go to latch the convertible top in position.278 05227

Convertible topRemoving emergency release keyTurn the red handle of the emergency releasekey anti-clockwise as far as it will go.Then turn the whole emergency release keyanti-clockwise and pull it out downwards, thus latching the convertible top.278 046It is also possible to open the convertible top using the emergency actuation function. This is to be performed in the reverse order of the procedure described above.28

Convertible topHydraulic pumpThe hydraulic pump is a rotor-type reciprocating pump which can operate in both directionsdepending on actuation.3/2-way solenoid valveElectric motorSwitching relayHydraulic pump278 07632

The rotor-type reciprocating pump draws inhydraulic fluid from the reservoir by way ofthe hole L.The centrifugal force of the pistons causesthe cylinders to be charged. The rotor turnstogether with the pistons about an eccentricstator. The pistons are thus forced inwardsagain and the hydraulic fluid conveyed intothe valve block at a pressure of max. 130 barvia the hole R.Switching of the solenoid valves appliespressure to the hydraulic cylinders.Changing the direction of rotation of theelectric motor reverses the pump process.Valve housing3/2-way solenoid valveRestrictorPump rNon-return valvePressure limiting valveHydraulic fluidreservoirIntake shuttle valve278 07533

Convertible topHydraulic cylindersUse is made in the Audi A4 Cabriolet of double-acting hydraulic cylinders, which can beactuated from both sides and act in two different directions to suit the situation concerned.Hydraulic cylinderHydraulic pipe connectionSealing ringClipNoncompressionstageCompressionstagePiston rodPiston crown278 07334

3/2-way solenoid valve NV 090The flow of current through the solenoidvalve coil causes the moving steel core toclose the upper ball valve. At the same time, the lower ball valve is opened by way of apush rod. The hydraulic fluid can then flowvia the outlet into the hydraulic cylinders.Releasing the switch brings the movement ofthe convertible top to an instant halt. The non-return valve enables the convertibletop to remain in its current position (onrelease of convertible top switch orinterruption of key-operated convenienceopening/closing).This "freezing" phase lasts for 10 minutesprovided that the solenoid valve is electricallyactuated. After this period or if the ignition is switchedoff, depressurisation takes place and mayresult in uncontrolled system collapse. With ignition off, all valves in the hydrauliccontrol unit are opened and the convertibletop can be operated manually.Shuttle valve:Moving steel coreCoilUpper ball valveInletLower ball valveOutletNon-return valvePump278 07435

Convertible top compartment lid cylindersPressure is applied to the non-compression stages of the convertible top compartment lidcylinders by way of the energised solenoid valve F2 and the lid remains in closed position.Master cylindersSolenoid valves F2 and F3 are energised. As a result, pressure is applied to both the compression and non-compression stages of themaster cylinders. The pressure is distributed evenly over the cylinder non-compression and compression stage. As the piston surface area of the compression stage is larger than that of the non-compressionstage, different forces can be generated under the same pressure conditions. The force thusacts on the compression stage, with the result that the cylinder is extended as far as its endstop and stays in this position. The convertible top remains tilted forwards.Convertible top frame cylindersThe non-compression stages of the two frame cylinders are actuated by the switched solenoidvalve F3 and raise the convertible top frame. As it is actuated simultaneously from both sides, the shuttle valve W1 opens in the direction ofthe frame cylinder non-compression stages, with the connection to the cylinder compressionstages being blocked by a one-direction non-return valve. This causes the frame cylinders to be retracted and the convertible top frame to be raised.Hydraulic fluid displaced from the compression stages is routed into the reservoir.37

Convertible top compartment lid cylindersPressure is simultaneously applied from both sides by way of the energised solenoid valves F1and F2 to the convertible top compartment lid cylinders, which are thus extended. This is due to the larger piston surface areas in the compression stage and the consequentdifference in forces arising on applying the same level of pressure. The compartment lid is raised.Master cylindersSolenoid valves F2 and F3 are energised. As a result, pressure is applied to both the compression and non-compression stages of themaster cylinders.Convertible top frame cylindersPressure is simultaneously applied from both sides via the energised solenoid valves F2 and F3to the shuttle valve W1, thus causing it to open and hydraulic pressure to be routed to the noncompression stages of the convertible top frame cylinders. As a result, the frame cylinders remain retracted and the convertible top frame is held in raisedposition.39
