Midwife in Icelandic:Ljósmóðir - YfirsetukonaMother of Light – With womanLjósmóðir means mother oflight and yfirsetukona meansbeing present at the side of thewoman –with woman.The concept of light connects tothe name of Lucina, the Romangoddess who assists women inchildbirth, bringing light intothe world or baby into the light.3

Twinning Up North ProjectIntroduction Background: We, as educators, believe that changes inmidwifery education can impact midwifery practice. Variousteaching methods and social media are strong tools formidwifery students and practicing midwives to gatherinformation to strengthen leadership skills and promotionof normality of childbirth. Aim: To develop a small midwifery education module (0,5 –1,0 ECTS) on leadership and use of social media in thecontext of promoting normal birth. The module will betought in three midwifery schools in the Netherlands andone in Iceland.4

Twinning Up North ProjectIntroduction The aim of the project is in line with the goals of the Twinning UpNorth project of the Associations of Midwifery in the Netherlands(KNOV) and in Iceland ( LMFÍ ) - to enhance midwifery leadership,the use of social media, promotion of normal birth in all settings,advocacy of women’s autonomy and choice of care. The education module was developed based on a qualitativereseach with focus group interviews with students in bothcountries. Based on the study findings, the content of the module andteaching methods were developed. The midwifery schools involved are in the process ofimplementing the whole module or a part of the module where itfits best in their pre-exsisting curriculum.5

Content of the module (0.5 ECTS) Lecture on Leadership: Midwifery, empowerment, andadvocacy; gender studies and feminism. Lecture on social media, presence and presentations Lecture on Persuasion in a rhetorical situation (includingethos, logos and pathos). Lecture from a local leadership role model: Theexperience of a real life midwifery leader. “The cocktail dialogue”: Practical role playing excercises inpersuasion techniques in a rhetorical situation (optional:musical leader exercises). Optional: An assignment, promoting normal birth in socialmedia (0.5 ECTS).10

Learning outcomes Students will have knowledge of basic leadership skills inthe context of promoting normal birth. Students will be empowered to be advocates for normalbirth in private, public and professional discussion. Students are stimulated to make short informationalpresentations about the benefits of normal birth both inperson and in various electronic media. Students have the tools to connect with women on socialmedia and moderate discussion on choices in having anormal birth.11

Bangladesh Nursing Council (BNC) developed this midwifery curriculum with technical assistance from the World Health Organization (WHO).
