Navarre said livestockowners should take precautions toprotect their animals.Shesuggestedsprayingthepremises or animals with aninsecticideapprovedbytheEnvironmental Protection Agency.Animals should only be sprayedwith products labeled for use withthat particular animal species. Shewarned owners not to use a premisespray directly on animals unless thelabel specifies that use.Ownerscancontacttheirveterinarian for information onproducts that can be applied onlivestock. She said Brahman cattle aremore sensitive to organophosphateinsecticides. Information on premisesprays is available at https://bit.ly/premisespray.“There are many products approved. The best thing is to contact yourlocal farm supply store to see whatthey have available,” Navarre said.“Follow all label directions for use, including proper dilution. Also, followall meat and milk withdrawal timesfor products used in food animals.”Navarre said livestock ownersshould also consider:Moving animals away from trees.Clipping vegetation.Finding areas without vegetationor ploughing up some ground forresting spots.Moving individual or small groupsof animals into stalls or a barn withfans. She said blanketing horses cancause heat stress, and fly sheetsdon’t work well against mosquitos. She also recommended that horseowners have their horses vaccinatedagainst mosquito-borne diseasessuch as encephalitis and West Nilevirus.
