RUSSELL NEIGHBORHOOD PROFILEJuly 2017Prepared in Partnership Between theKentucky State Data Centerat the University of Louisvilleand Metro United WayLouisville’s traditional urbanneighborhoods were firstdefined by the Departmentof Public Works in 1975 andare still used today. However, federal agenciesthat publish data for smallareas do not recognizethese types of nonstandardized geographies, and data is thus not directlyavailable for Louisville’surban neighborhoods. TheCensus Bureau delineatescensus tracts — statisticalunits used to publish datafor small areas — after eachDecennial Census. Becausecensus tract boundariesalign fairly well with theurban neighborhoodboundaries, this data profileuses 2010 census tractboundaries to approximatethe traditional urbanneighborhoods.Unless otherwise noted, thedata in this profile reflectsthe five year time periodfrom the beginning of 2011through the end of 2015.Russell Neighborhood Profile— July 20171
