IntroductionYou Figure 1. Cutaway of RTAC air-cooled chillerLike its chillers,Trane wants itsrelationships with customers to last.Traneis interested in maintaining long term, loyal relationships. This perspectivemeans the point in time that a customerpurchases a chiller is the beginning of arelationship, not the end.Your business isimportant, but your satisfaction isparamount.4Designed by Customers .1Trane’s RTAC was designed with the enduser’s requirements in mind. Reliability, sound, efficiency and physical size wereprimary design concerns with this latestgeneration machine. New technologieswere applied to literally every majorcomponent. The result is an unparalleledengineering achievement in chiller designand manufacturing.253What’s NewThe RTAC offers the same high reliabilityof Trane’s previous air-cooled helicalrotary design coupled with loweredsound levels, increased energy efficiency, reduced physical footprint due to itsadvanced design, low speed/direct drivecompressor and proven Series Rperformance. Some of the major advantages of theModel RTAC are: Lower sound levels Higher energy efficiency Smaller physical footprint HFC-134a optimized designThe Series R Model RTAC is an industrialgrade design built for both the industrialand commercial markets. Fortunately,ASHRAE has created a guidelineemphasizing its importance. Nonetheless, energy is often dismissed as anoperational cost over which the ownerhas little control. That perception results inmissed opportunities for energyefficiency, reduced utility bills, and higherprofits. Lower utility bills directly affectprofitability. Every dollar saved in energygoes directly to the bottom line.Trane’sRTAC is one way to maximize yourprofits.4ASHRAE Standard 90.1 & ExecutiveOrder - New technology applied to thedesign, controls, and manufacturing havecreated excellent efficiency levels in theRTAC that are helping to push industryminimums to new heights. AllTrane aircooled chillers meet the new efficiencylevels mandated by ASHRAE Standard90.1.This new standard requires higherefficiencies than past technologies candeliver. The US Federal Government hasadopted standard 90.1 and, in somecases, requires even higher efficiencies.Federal Executive Order mandatesenergy consuming devices procuredmust be in the top 25% of their class. Inthe case of chillers, that product standardis ASHRAE 90.1.Trane’s RTAC meets andexceeds the efficiency requirements of90.1, while the high efficiency RTAC canmeet the “stretch goals” of ExecutiveOrder.Precise Capacity Control. Trane’spatented unloading system allows thecompressor to modulate infinitely andexactly match building loads. At the sametime chilled water temperatures will bemaintained within /- 1/2ºF [0.28 C] ofsetpoint. Reciprocating and screw chillerswith stepped capacity control do well tomaintain chilled water temperatureswithin 2ºF [1.1 C] of setpoint. Steppedcontrol also results in overcooling yourspace because rarely does the capacityof the machine match the building load. The result can be 10% higher energy bills.Trane’s RTAC optimizes the part loadperformance of your machine for energyefficiency, precise control for processapplications, and your personal comfortregardless of the weather outside.RLC-PRC006-EN

Features andBenefitsFigure 2. Cutaway of a compressorExcellent Reliability A buildings environment is expected tobe comfortable. When it is, no one says aword. If it’s not that’s a different story. The same is true with chillers. No oneever talks about chillers, yet alonecompressors, until they fail, and tenantsare uncomfortable and productivity islost.Trane’s helical rotary compressorshave been designed and built to stayrunning when you need them.Fewer moving parts. Trane’s helical rotarycompressors have only two majorrotating parts: the male and female rotor.A reciprocating compressor can havemore than 15 times that number ofcritical parts. Multiples of pistons, valves, crankshafts, and connecting rods in areciprocating unit all represent differentfailure paths for the compressor. In fact, reciprocating compressors can easilyhave a failure rate four times of a helicalrotor. Combine that with two to threereciprocating compressors for eachhelical rotary compressor on chillers ofequal tonnage, and statistics tell you it’s amatter of time before you lose areciprocating compressor.RLC-PRC006-ENRobust components. Helical rotarycompressors are precisely machinedusing state of the art processes from solidmetal bar stock. Tolerances aremaintained within a micron or less than atenth of the diameter of a human hair.Theresulting compressor is a robust yethighly sophisticated assembly capable ofingesting liquid refrigerant without risk ofdamage. Contrast this to a reciprocatingcompressor, which can be destroyed by asingle slug of liquid.Condenser coils.Trane’s condensercoils are manufactured with the samephilosophy as the compressors; they’rebuilt to last. Even though manufacturingprocesses have allowed thinner andthinner materials in their assembly, withobvious material and manufacturingsavings,Trane’s coil material did notchange with the RTAC generation of aircooled chillers. Substantial condenserfins, that do not require additional coatingin non-corrosive environments, contribute to the highest reliabilitystandards for air-cooled chillers in theindustry.5

Features andBenefitsSuperior Control The Adaptive Control microprocessorsystem enhances the air-cooled Series Rchiller by providing the very latest chillercontrol technology. With the AdaptiveControl microprocessor, unnecessaryservice calls and unhappy tenants areavoided. The unit is designed not to trip orunnecessarily shut down. Only when theTracer chiller controllers haveexhausted all possible corrective actionsand the unit is still violating an operatinglimit will the chiller shut down. Controls onother equipment typically shut down thechiller, usually just when it is needed themost. For example:A typical five-year-old chiller with dirtycoils might trip-out on high pressurecutout on a 100 F [38 C] day in August. Ahot day is just when comfort cooling isneeded the most. In contrast, the aircooled Series R chiller with an AdaptiveControl microprocessor will stage fanson, modulate electronic expansion valve, and modulate slide valve position as itapproaches a high pressure cutout, thereby keeping the chiller on-line whenyou need it the most.Simple Installation Compact Physical Size.TheTrane ModelRTAC chiller averages a 20% reductionin physical footprint, while the greatestchange is actually 40% smaller whencompared against the previous design. This improvement makes the RTAC thesmallest air-cooled chiller in the industryand a prime candidate for installationsthat have space constraints. All physicalsizes were changed without sacrificingthe side clearances needed to supplyfresh airflow without coil starvation. Close Spacing Installation. The air-cooledSeries R Chiller has the tightestrecommended side clearance in theindustry, four feet for maximumperformance. In situations whereequipment must be installed with lessclearance than recommended, whichfrequently occurs in retrofit applications, restricted airflow is common.Conventional chillers may not work atall. However, the air-cooled Series Rchiller with Adaptive Control microprocessor will make as muchchilled water as possible given theactual installed conditions, stay on lineduring unforeseen abnormal conditions, and optimize the unit performance.Consult yourTrane sales engineer formore details. Factory Testing Means Trouble-FreeStart-Up. All air-cooled Series R chillersare given a complete functional test atthe factory. This computer-based testprogram completely checks the sensors, wiring, electrical components, microprocessor function, communication capability, expansionvalve performance and fans. In addition, each compressor is run and tested toverify capacity and efficiency. Whereapplicable, each unit is factory preset tothe customer’s design conditions; anexample would be leaving liquidtemperature setpoint. The result of thistest program is that the chiller arrives atthe job site fully tested and ready foroperation. Factory Installed and Tested Controls/Options Speed Installation. All Series Rchiller options, including main powersupply disconnect, low ambient control, ambient temperature sensor, lowambient lockout, communicationinterface and ice making controls, arefactory installed and tested. Somemanufacturers send accessories inpieces to be field installed. WithTrane, the customer saves on installationexpense and has assurance that ALLchiller controls/options have been testedand will function as intended.Figure 3. Minimum installation clearance requirements for no performance degradation6RLC-PRC006-EN

Features andBenefitsUnit Performance TestingThe ARI Certification Program has had acertification program covering air-cooledwater chillers for many years. With this inmind, customers may ask, “Do I need tofactory performance test my chiller?”Trane began promoting factoryperformance tests for water-cooled waterchillers in 1984 for the same reasons it isvalid today for air-cooled water chillers, toshow we stand behind the products wedesign and build. The benefits of a performance testinclude verification of performance, prevention of operational problems, andassurance of a smooth start-up. Only aperformance test conducted in alaboratory or laboratory grade facility willconfirm both performance and operationof a specific chiller. While most factory performance tests gosmoothly, should problems occur,Tranepersonnel can quickly correct them andthe chiller will ship as specified. Job sitediagnosis, ordering of parts, and waitingfor delivery of replacement componentsis significantly reduced.A factory performance test reduces startup time, thereby saving job site expense.A chiller that has been tested is operationand performance-proven.This allows theinstalling contractor to concentrate onproper electrical wiring and water piping, and the service technicians toconcentrate on proper refrigerant charge, safeties diagnosis and initial logging ofthe chiller. Means of obtaining full load onthe chiller and proving its performance donot have to be determined by engineersor contractors, thus saving time. Thecertified test report documentsperformance for the unit as built. Inaddition, factory testing significantlyreduces commissioning time and risk byre-introducing manufacturerresponsibility, where its mitigation shouldreside. When a factory performance test isrequested, the test can be conducted atthe specified design conditions for allpackaged chillers from 70 to 500 tons. The test facility has the capability tocontrol ambient test conditions to assureour customers that our chillers willperform as predicted.Figure 4. Human InterfacesTheTrane air-cooled Model RTAC chilleroffers two easy-to-use operator interfacepanels, the EasyView and the DynaView.ControlsStandalone ControlsFigure C1. DynaView operator interfaceStandard Features External Auto/Stop — A jobsiteprovided contact closure will turn theunit on and off.DynaView is an LCD touchscreen displaythat is navigated by file tabs. This is anadvanced interface that allows the userto access any important informationconcerning setpoints, activetemperatures, modes, electrical data, pressures, and diagnostics. Chilled Waterflow Interlock — A jobsiteprovided contact closure from a chilledwater pump contactor or a flow switch isrequired and will allow unit operation if aload exists. This feature will allow theunit to run in conjunction with the pumpsystem.Adaptive Safety ControlsA centralized microcomputer offers ahigher level of machine protection. Sincethe safety controls are smarter, they limitcompressor operation to avoidcompressor or evaporator failures, thereby minimizing nuisance shutdown.Tracer Chiller Controls directly sensesthe control variables that govern theoperation of the chiller: motor currentdraw, evaporator pressure andcondenser pressure. When any one ofthese variables approaches a limitcondition where damage may occur tothe unit or shutdown on a safety,TracerChiller Controls takes corrective action toavoid shutdown and keep the chilleroperating. This happens throughcombined actions of compressor slidevalve modulation, electronic expansionvalve modulation and fan staging.TracerChiller Controls optimizes total chillerpower consumption during normaloperating conditions. During abnormaloperating conditions, the microprocessorwill continue to optimize chillerperformance by taking the corrective External Interlock — A jobsite suppliedcontact opening wired to this input willturn the unit off and require a manualreset of the unit microcomputer.Thisclosure is typically triggered by a jobsitesupplied system such as a fire alarm.RLC-PRC006-ENaction necessary to avoid shutdown.Thiskeeps cooling capacity available until theproblem can be solved. Wheneverpossible, the chiller is allowed to performits function; making chilled water. Inaddition, microcomputer controls allowfor more types of protection such as overand under voltage. Overall, the safetycontrols help keep the building or processrunning and out of trouble.Standalone ControlsInterface to standalone units is verysimple; only a remote auto/stop forscheduling is required for unit operation.Signals from the chilled water pumpcontactor auxiliary or a flow switch arewired to the chilled waterflow interlock.Signals from a time clock or some otherremote device are wired to the externalauto/stop input. Chilled Water Pump Control — Unitcontrols provide an output to control thechilled water pump(s). One contactclosure to the chiller is all that is requiredto initiate the chilled water system.Chilled water pump control by the chilleris a requirement on the Air-CooledSeries R. Chilled Water Temperature Reset —Reset can be based on return watertemperature or outdoor airtemperature.9
