The Next Valley OverThe Next ValleyOverBy Rob Heinsoo, August 2018The battle that drove away the Chaosdemons also killed all of the valley’spriestesses and holy people. Now the farmersand warriors of Dunhollow need theadventurers’ help to journey to the nextvalley to discover what has happened to thegreat temple to Orlanth, the Storm King. When you need adventurers, everyoneknows it’s going to be bad. This freeform 13th Age in Glorantha demoadventure includes six pre-generatedthird level characters. You’ll find themat the end after the monster stats. We have two hours. Running the exactsame adventure/encounter over andover again gets boring for GMs and failsto showcase what 13th Age in Gloranthacan accomplish as a semi-freeformgame.Instead of starting with the standard rpgnotion that there is a single fixedadventure that everyone getting a demowill experience, we’re going to run ourtwo-hour demos with a bit ofimprovisation and invention by the GMas well as by the players. We’ll provide a number of pregenerated third level characters. Abilityscores, talents, powers, spells, and featswill all be selected and have their math 2018 Moon Design LLC2worked out for easy play. But thepregen characters are generic, they leavethe unique pieces of character creationthat make each PC special up theplayers. In the first hour of the demo, players will fill out their One UniqueThing, backgrounds, choose their gods. The second hour will provide a taste ofcombat and roleplaying. If you’ve gotmore than two hours, the demo can be agood start to a longer game.CHARACTER GENERATIONThe first hour or so (faster if playersturn out be experienced with 13th Age) isspent introducing 13th Age in Gloranthaby helping players choose One UniqueThings, backgrounds, their god andtheir personal rune.Introduction to Glorantha? At the start you’ll want to get a feel forhow many already know Glorantha andhow many people are familiar with the13th Age system.I suggest using page 448 of 13G tointroduce the gods, and point out thegods’ runes. I’m also planning to havecopies of pages 62-63 sitting around onthe table for people to look at while Imention how important the runes are inthe world and while they are figuringout what to do with their characters.Pregen CharactersThe six pregen characters are all human. If you’re an enterprising GM and wantto add a duck or troll, go for it, but it can13th Age Glorantha Demo

The Next Valley Overslow a demo down for people who arenot familiar with Glorantha.Tell players that you’ll help them goover their combat abilities the first timethey take their turn in combat. That’s agood time to focus on each specificplayer, and by then, many people willhave read enough to have a good gripthemselves. It’s worth mentioning that as thirdlevel characters, the PCs are heroes, oras tough as heroes. They probably justhelped fight off a demonic invasion inDunhollow, so it’s fine to let them playas if they have fought together before—they probably just did!By the way, if Dunhollow is on amap somewhere, that wasn’t myintention: I’m thinking about anOrlanthi valley somewhere in themountains, probably but not necessarilyin Sartar. One Unique ThingWe know that coming up with a OneUnique Thing for a Gloranthancharacter is harder for people who don’tknow the world. Feel free to encouragepeople to come up with one VeryInteresting Thing for purposes of thisdemo, it can be a lot easier than beingtruly Unique and it will serve the samepurpose, making the game moreinteresting and giving the player andGM hooks for the story.Give examples from the book. 2018 Moon Design LLC3BackgroundsDon’t wait for people to come up withtheir Unique/Very Interesting, they’llthink about it as you introducebackgrounds.Explain backgrounds as theinteresting jobs or roles their characterhas had in their life. Explain that whenyou have a background that seemsrelevant to a skill check, you can use thepoints in the background to add to thecheck, you don’t have to keep track ofseparate skills. And tell people that they’re free tomake things up about the world, andtheir character, as the story behind thejobs or roles or experiences that wereimportant enough to qualify asbackgrounds. Take moments to explainhow the things they’re creating couldaffect a full campaign instead of a onetime session, that helps people thinkabout a hypothetical future. One thing players might want tomake up are details about DunhollowOR the next valley over that holds thetemple, and that’s something toencourage.Runes: Most characters have two runeschosen as part of their class. Often thestory someone has made up about theirOne Unique Thing and backgroundsgives the GM a pretty clear idea whatthe character’s third rune should be! Ifnot, the player gets to choose and shapetheir personality a bit more.Remember to roll and see whichrune each character can narrate in thesession ahead.13th Age Glorantha Demo

The Next Valley OverRune GiftsOne way of making players feel specialin the brief space of a demo is listeningto their backstory, and One UniqueThing, and saying something like “OK,you’re a very powerful hero, and yourexperience with gave you atype of power that other heroes don’tusually have.” Then you hand them arune gift that matches something fromtheir story. A few improv-happy playerswill work the story of how they gainedthe rune gift into their story, most willbe happy to have you tell a little storyabout cool they were. You probably won’t have time to dothis for all characters, but if you domake it part of their character creationprocess they might thank you for it andthe battle will be a bit easier.4I’ll use a page break here in case it’shelpful to have the rune gifts onseparate pages for the players. What follows are a few simple runegifts that would be popular with newplayers. Each has a name or a powerthat seems like something that mightcome up in a character’s backstory andmechanics that fit in a demo. Feel free tolook through other rune gifts on page77 , but don’t choose gifts that would betough for new players to figure out.The drawback: The drawback ofgiving out a rune gift is that you’relikely to need to pencil in a change tothe character’s attacks or a defensebased on the gift’s default bonus. Ifthere’s a player who is already familiarwith the game playing, get them to helpother players with details like that. 2018 Moon Design LLC13th Age Glorantha Demo

The Next Valley Over7THE BATTLEGroup Dynamics. . . at least, it’s usually a battle, unless you haveplayer characters who are all about incrediblepowers of persuasion or entirely diverted bytheir own subplots (I’ve had it happen).Sometimes groups of demo players havecollaborated on creating their owngroup dynamic that explains how theywill approach the adventure. It’s rare, but if it’s happening, find thecommonality and bring it out so that thegroup has more of a sense of belongingtogether. (Examples I’ve had runningother 13th Age games have included aband of musicians touring for theDiabolist; the Brat Pack of Axis; outlaws;and a group in which half the PCs werethe enemies of the other half and theywere being forced to work togetheragainst their will, but someday therewould be a blood reckoning!)The last hour of the demo is spentplaying through a single combatencounter as the PCs try to find outwhat happened in the valley next door. We’ll get to how you’re going to set upthe story of that encounter in a moment, but first I want to mention the monsterstats. This demo includes stats for five groupsof monsters. You’ll want to have minisfor each of the groups, assuming youuse minis. Each of the monster groups starts withnotes on how they might get involved inthe story. As the players create theircharacters, you may have time to thinkabout which style of story they seeminterested in interacting with. The monster groups also mention tacticsto guide the GM. Sometimes the tacticsconcern monster abilities, other timesthey mention advice for helping the PCshave fun.Timing: If you have more time, the lasthour can turn into two or even threehours. I’ve run this as an improvadventure for four hours, piecingtogether multiple battles that fit theplayers’ roleplaying choices. 2018 Moon Design LLCThe Next ValleyDepending on how you introduce thestory, the PCs may expect to end theirjourney at the mysteriously silenttemple to Orlanth. But the events ofyour session don’t have to let them getto their destination. In some ways, for agroup that has come up with interestingbackstories and One Unique Things, thevery best outcome could be that thebattle encounter will be a fight on theway to the Temple, perhaps somethinggenerated partly from their backstories. Each of the set-up pages for the differentmonster groups mentions someapproaches that might work for thosemonsters.Cut to the Chase? It’s your call whether you want to startthe action with roleplaying, exploration,13th Age Glorantha Demo

The Next Valley Overor combat. Feel free to let one or moreplayers make a skill check as they enterthe valley, or narrate how they travel, ortalk with NPCs.But for that type of action, we’re leavingyou to your own GM wiles. The focus ofthe demo is to teach character creationand combat mechanics, so you couldinstead narrate a brief story based onwhat the PCs have told you aboutthemselves already, and cut straight tosetting up a battle and rolling initiative. Not what usually happens in a 13Ggame, but in a two-hour demo, just fine.Running the BattleThere probably won’t be more time touse icon relationship rolls during thefight. Get a player to track initiative foryou. Remember to bump the escalationdie up one point at the end of eachround.Tell people that creatures are either neareach other (one move and attack) or faraway (two moves) or sometimesengaged!Things that are fun to teach include theescalation die, disengaging, rallying(well sort of fun) and maybe battlehealing if people drop to 0 hp.Many of the battles contain mooks, meant to make the PCs feel powerful. 2018 Moon Design LLC8Using Rune NarrationsSince the demo is nearly all combat, feelfree to break the rule about not usingrune narrations in combat. Odds are youwon’t need them, but they could comein handy if the PCs are in deep troubleand need some help. Just don’t let themcompletely decide the combat orovershadow other peoples’ characters.Rune narrations in this demo combatcould twist the story a little or provide amomentary advantage, but remember toroll for complications. What you want toshow is that runes can matter, but youdon’t want to take the place of combatmechanics. (See the Chaos Madnessmonster fight for a suggested way ofusing rune narrations.)Things not to worry aboutPlay terrain any way you like, but don’tworry about it. There isn’t really time toget deeply into terrain action whenpeople are playing for the first time. Theease of simply moving your charactersaround and attacking should be thepriority. An Orlanthi valley could have terrainincluding orchards, brush, thornbushes,a circle of standing stones, a ruinedtemple other than the one the PCs wantto get to, a recent battlefield (samedemon attack that hit Dunhollow?),light forest, pastures, a village, aburning village, and so on.13th Age Glorantha Demo

The Next Valley OverCHAOS-TOUCHED BANDITSThe problem appears to be from otherOrlanthi, maybe even people the PCs know. But they’ve been touched by Chaos and arein league with broos! If one or more of the PCs inventedsignificant relationships with otherOrlanthi, or rivalries with a nearby clanas part of their back story or OneUnique Thing, you might want to usethis group of Chaos-touched Orlanthi asthe adversary. They might beencountered in the temple, pretendingthat they didn’t murder all the priests,or they might be encountered burningand plundering farms before the PCscan reach the temple.A familiar foe?: If the broo convertturns out to be someone the PCs know, you can work the incident out as anambush, when the convert strips offtheir shirt and the outlaw’s javelinsbegin raining down. Or maybe the PCshave always suspected this guy wasgoing to turn out to be trouble! He’s real trouble now, infected byChaos, so you’ll be using the rules forChaos stealing the escalation die frompage 248 of 13G, partially reprintedbelow for your convenience. If you want to amuse yourself, feelfree to give the broo convert (orconverts) a Chaotic feature from page251-253. That’s not necessary for a demogame but it might be fun.Fighting ChaosFighting ? Chaos isn’t like fightinganyone else. 2018 Moon Design LLC9If a battle pits the player charactersagainst Chaos creatures, there is achance each round that Chaos steals theescalation die from the playercharacters. At the beginning of each roundwhen the escalation die advances, theGM chooses one of the players to roll ad20. If the party contains a trickster, thetrickster is always the PC who has toroll this d20.1–5: The PCs don’t add the escalationdie to their attacks this round;instead, all ? (FYI, we’ve removed both theJack O’Bear’s horrible nastier specialand the piece of the monster that allowsPCs to flee without taking a campaignloss; neither seem appropriate for ademo.)This group of abominations might bethe root of the valley’s problem.Lightning slingers are Chaoticallymodified former spirits of reprisal, lightning spirits in Orlanth’s pantheonwho punished Orlanthi who committedminor offenses, so they might have hada corrupt inside path into the temple.GM Tactics: These creatures have anasty mix of ranged and melee attacks. The lightning slinger, in particular, isgoing to be a serious problem for mostof the pregen characters, who are likelyto possess the g Air rune that triggersits special hate.To make this battle more fun forplayers, see if you can get one of the PCsto narrate a rune explaining how thebattle changes so that the lightning 2018 Moon Design LLC11slingers no longer have so much poweragainst g Air rune heroes. You couldincrease the number of trollkin slightlybut put them on guard duty instead ofactive fighting, herding helpless humancaptives.GM Tactics: Compared to most of thepossible battles, these trolls have a fairamount of ranged attacks.
