2020 ELK POPULATION STATUS BY ELK ZONEElk populationsfluctuate constantlyin response to weather, predation, landmanagement actions, fire events, invasivespecies, private landuse, and development. To maintain elk huntingexperiences desired bysportsmen, the IdahoDepartment of Fish andGame manages herdswithin desired ranges byadjusting hunting seasonsand hunter numbersto provide high quality hunting opportunities, maintainavailability of general season hunts with over-the-counter tagsales, and minimize conflicts with agriculture. Fish and Gamealso works closely with land managers and private landownersto ensure the existence of high quality elk habitat throughoutthe state. In 2014 the boundaries of a few elk zones weremodified to better match up with elk populations and theirseasonal movements.Elk herds currently are within or above managementobjectives in 16 of 22 elk management zones that haveestablished numeric objectives for number of cow elk,and in 17 of 22 zones with set objectives for number ofbull elk. Hunting opportunities in these zones range fromtrophy quality bull hunts to “extra” cow hunts. In zonescurrently below objectives, Fish and Game is working hardto improve elk survival and increase the populations byreducing or eliminating cow harvest, adjusting bull harvest, and intensively managing predators to reduce the impacts ofpredation on those herds.Changing conditions and management challenges have alwaysbeen part of the landscape, but with responsive managementand more than 120,000 elk, Idaho continues to provide anincredible variety of excellent elk hunting opportunitiesdesired by sportsmen. For additional information on elk management objectives andhunter success rates, please visit our website at:idfg.idaho.gov/hunt/elk.1ELK1Cow Elk Population ObjectivesBull Elk Population Objectives4A2Panhandle34Below ObjectiveWithin ObjectivePalouse 10A11Palouse 10A121111Aidfg.idaho.gov10Lolo1211A1617Elk City mMiddleMcCall30Sa 2822Fork29252730A37A24613136B 373432A6059LemhiSawtooth62A58 59A3335 36 36AIsland Park32516260APioneerBoise River6364 65485063A39Snake River434967 Palisades38446968k 66eerSmoky-BennettBig DesertTex C66A52454052A68A71 72OwyheeSnake River70Diamond53744176 Creek73A46Bannock 755642South Hills7377 7855545747BrownleeWeiserIdaho Big Game 2021 Seasons & RulesAbove lk City 16ASelwayHells14 1520Canyon191821A2120A19A2326onlmMiddleMcCall30Sa 2822Fork29252730A37A24613136B 373432A6059LemhiSawtooth62A58 59A3335 36 36AIsland Park51326260APioneerBoise River6364 65485039Snake Rive63Ar434967 Palisades38446968ke66erSmoky-BennettBig DesertTex C66A52454052A68A71 72OwyheeSnake River70Diamond53744176 Creek73A4675Bannock5642South Hills7377 7855545747BearRiverBrownleeWithin Objective91334Below ObjectiveDworshakDworshak98A5Above Objective7River682Panhandle34Weiser5No Numeric Objective4ANo Numeric ObjectiveBearRiver
