FY2000 : Kyoto University School of Public HealthInaugurated in the year 2000, Kyoto University School of Public Health(KUSPH) is the first and the largest School of Public Health in Japan. The schoolexplores the integrated socio-ecological approach for health, referred to as the “NewPublic Health”. To meet the new health challenges of the 21st century, combiningclassic public health fields such as communicable and chronic disease control, familyhealth, nutrition and environmental health with new fields such as clinicalepidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology, socio-epidemiology, behavioral science,health promotion, informatics, economics, and ethics. This innovative approach topublic health is pursued by the school’s nineteen departments, which welcomemotivated students and professionals from around the world with diversebackgrounds, including medical, natural, and social sciences.FY2014 : Public Health Master’s “Double Degree Program” (DDP)In line with Kyoto University’s internationalization promotion strategy, KUSPHintroduced Public Health Master’s “Double Degree Program” (DDP) with partneruniversities from ASEAN countries, namely, University of Malaya Faculty of Medicine(UM), Malaysia, and Chulalongkorn University College of Public Health Science(CUCPHS), Thailand since 2014. The DDP allows students to complete 2 master’sdegrees within the period of 2 years, or more, producing outstanding, competentgraduates with solid Public Health knowledge and skills, highly efficient and resilientunder pressure, equipped with strong problem-solving and management skills andpossessing the vital trait of cultural adaptability as global citizens.FY2015 : Participation in the “JGP: Japan Gateway – KyotoUniversity Top Global Program, Top Global University Project”Following the success of the DDP launch, KUSPH has been selected, amonga few graduate schools in Kyoto University, as a participating graduate school of the1 Page

“JGP: Japan Gateway – Kyoto University Top Global Program” in 2015 tocontinue its enthusiasm in promoting interdisciplinary and international collaborationwith prestigious Public Health Schools worldwide. As a result, KUSPH’s “InternationalOffice” was established in 2015. Through this office, KUSPH is forwarding itsinternationalization promotion strategy by expanding the DDP with National TaiwanUniversity College of Public Health (NTUCPH) (Taiwan), commencing from 2017, andMahidol University Faculty of Public Health (MUPH) (Thailand), commencing from2019. The DDP not only promotes student exchange between KUSPH and partneruniversities, but through the process, it also encourages the interchange of educationand research including ideas, technical Public Health expertise and experiencebetween staff, such as mutual efforts for monitoring, improvement, and evaluation ofthe program that nurture a long-term, resourceful, international collaboration amongthe institutions.Since 2014 till date, KUSPH offers DDP with CUCPHS, UM, NTUCPH, andMUPH. Until the end of 2018 fiscal year (FY), in total, 15 students have been enrolledin the DDP with significant productivity of 10 peer-reviewed publications among thesestudents co-authored with our international partners, as shown in Figure 1.
