Our mission is to ensurechildren and families haveaccess to healing, serviceand innovation throughouttheir life; and to providetraining, education andopportunities to the nextgeneration of pediatrichealthcare leaders. Our vision is a world inwhich all children, familiesand communities achievetheir full potential.2

Dear Supporters & Friends,It is with deep gratitude that I have the honor of sharing our 2019 Annual Report on behalf of theUniversity of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Department of Pediatrics and the Children’s HospitalUniversity of Illinois. This past year was defined by achievement and advancement in ourresidency program, in our newly funded faculty research, and in our progress toward meeting2020 strategic planning goals. Our expansion was captured in the growing number of patientsunder our care and the increasing support from our generous donors.I am very pleased that our group of 2019 pediatric residency graduates achieved a 100% boardpass rate as first-time test takers; this is a particular point of pride as the national average is86%. In terms of research, our total Department of Pediatrics research funding grew to morethan 15 million in FY19, an increase of almost 6 million from FY18. Additionally our Blue RidgeInstitute ranking for National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding rose to #35 nationally in 2019,up more than 30 places since 2014.Over the past few years, our pediatric clinical leaders implemented new initiatives to improveaccess to care for busy families. As a result, our system has experienced a 4% increase inoverall pediatric encounters since 2015. Approximately 80% of our patients are publiclyinsured and reside in Chicago’s most underserved communities, and it is core to our mission toprovide convenient, supportive care to these families. To meet their specific needs with regardto school and work schedules, we expanded Child & Youth Center hours in 2019 to offer eveningappointments four nights per week and additional Saturday clinics. In 2020, we will further expand our services to vulnerable populations with medicalcomplexities via our CHECK program as a designated Illinois Integrated Health Home (IHH) andthrough our established partnerships with the UIC Department of Specialized Care for Children(DSCC) and United Healthcare. CHECK is only one part of our plan for 2020, and we hope you willstay connected and support us in our work as providers, educators, researchers, andadvocates.Gratefully,Benjamin W. Van Voorhees, MD, MPHHead, Department of PediatricsPhysician-in-Chief, Children's HospitalUniversity of Illinois3

Our "Anti-CLABSI Team" has been hard at work for the past 7 yearschasing zero, and as a result, our general pediatrics ward has gone morethan six years without a CLABSI while our PICU and NICU have gonemore than three years. The prevention of these infections is due to a collaborative programfocusing on hand hygiene accountability. These patient safety milestoneshave been celebrated system-wide and were featured multiple times bythe Children's Hospital Association. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit team, including faculty andfellows, celebrate another CLABSI-free yearThe inpatient general pediatrics team, including nurses, physicians and staff, promote the importance of hand hygieneand its role in infection prevention and patient safety14

We offerpatient-centered, noninvasive cardiac imaging techniques, including Cardiac MRI and Cardiac CT. This enables us to obtainhighly detailed information and is imperative to forming highlytailored treatment plans for each patient. This cardiac imagingallows us to better understand the aging process for cardiacanatomy and anticipate problems before symptoms appear. In 2019, our perinatal cardiology team, led by Dr. Naveen Imranand in partnership with UI Health Maternal Fetal Medicine, expanded fetal cardiac diagnostic services. By providing expertcardiac care at the time of delivery, infant morbidity and mortalityare reduced.16Our FacultyAlexander Javois, MDAssistant ProfessorSection ChiefMaria SerrattoBenvenuto, MDProfessorAndrew Griffin, MDAssistant ProfessorVithida Sueblinvong, MDAssistant ProfessorNaveen Imran, MDAssistant ProfessorPeter Varga, MDAssociate ProfessorOur Nurse PractitionerKristin Elwart, DNP, MS, NP-BC, Pediatric Cardiology& Cardiothoracic Surgery
