WHAT IS THE ROLEOF A WARFARESPECIALIST?General Service Warfare Specialists, who serve onboardships, are split into four sub-specialisations:Abovewater Warfare Tactical (AWT), AbovewaterWarfare Weapons (AWW), Electronic Warfare (EW)and Underwater Warfare (UW). With each role you willeither operate state-of-the-art Radar, Sonar, Weapon orComputer Systems to maintain safe and secure waters aswell as conducting peace keeping and maritime securityoperations around the world.2

TRAININGTraining and development are continuous throughout yourcareer within the Royal Navy. It takes place at onshore trainingfacilities and onboard operational ships. On joining, you’llcomplete 10 weeks of Basic Training (phase 1) at HMS Raleigh,where you’ll gain skills that will stay with you throughout yourcareer. After that, you’ll go on to complete three months (phase2) sub-specialisation (AWT, AWW, EW, or UW) training at theMaritime Warfare School at HMS COLLINGWOOD, which isbased in Fareham, Hampshire.4

Atthe start of your career you will be employed as part of thearmed Ship’s Protection Force when alongside as well asthe Response Force, manning the Close Range Weapons atsea. As you progress in the Royal Navy you will be requiredto assist in Boarding Operations, direct the Medium RangeGun, become the expert in Naval Military Training onboardand utilise both the Ship’s Air Defence and Surface missilesystems. WARFARE SPECIALIST JOBSELECTRONIC WARFARE (EW)UNDERWATER WARFARE (UW)ACTIVEON:ACTIVEON:Royal Navy Electronic Warfare involves using specialistequipment to intercept and analyse electromagnetic(Radar) emissions to determine their identity. Once youhave discovered what the radar is, you can work out whatShip, Aircraft or Submarine it is fitted to, assess its weaponsystems and its intent, therefore what threat it poses toyour Ship. Building a tactical picture of what’s aroundus without giving away our position, contributing to theUKs Maritime Security understanding, globally, to achieveoffensive and defensive effects. You will use equipmentto reduce and/or prevent adversaries use of their radars,while ensuring we can use our radars effectively to gaintactical advantage. As your career progresses you willbecome an expert in Anti-Ship Missile Defence, in controlof launching Counter Measures to defeat incoming threatskeeping your Ship safe and operating effectively.One of the biggest potential threats to the Royal Navysilently lurks beneath the waves and comes fromsubmarines. As an Underwater Warfare Specialist, it willbe your job to protect our ‘Continuous at sea NuclearDeterrent’ and ‘Carrier Strike capability’. You will betrained how to operate the most advanced SONARsystems in the world and will be an essential part ofthe Warfare team. Trained to recognise the uniquecharacteristics of these highly sophisticated vessels youwill be able to detect and track submarines to safeguardour Aircraft Carriers and Nuclear Deterrent. You will bepart of an elite team of ‘Sub-Hunters’ playing a dangerousgame of cat and mouse using your NVQ accreditedanalytical skills to provide information that will enable theCommand to make tactical decisions.
