TERMINOLOGYIf you are new to metal detecting, we have provideddefinitions below to help you better understandterminology used in this manual. The following wasreprinted with permission from: DETECTORIST, A How-ToGuide to Better Metal Detecting, by Robert H. Sickler.AIR TEST - A test to determine the maximum sensitivity ametal detector is capable of under ideal conditions. Varioussized metal samples are held beyond the searchcoilbottom at varying distances to determine the limits ofaudio or visual response. Air tests are not accurateindicators of ground penetration ability. (see BENCH TEST)ALKALINE - A grade of battery composition which sustainshigher current drain and possesses a greater shelf life thanbasic carbon-zinc types.BENCH TEST - Another form of air test used to definewhich discriminate settings accept or reject various targetsamples. Detector is placed upon a stationary, nonmetallicrest and samples are manually passed across the bottom ofthe searchcoil.CARBON-ZINC - The standard or basic grade of drycellbattery.DISCRIMINATION - Circuitry and the mode of operation inwhich audio or visual responses from undesired metalobjects are intentionally eliminated.GROUND BALANCE - A condition or mode of operation inwhich the detector is adjusted to optimally reduce theinterference that ground mineralization has on metaltargets.MOTION DISCRIMINATOR - A detector requiring constantsearchcoil motion to reduce the effect ground mineralinterference has on its discriminate function.PINPOINTING - The act of aligning the center of targetresponse width to the designated searchcoil center foraccurate location and careful recovery.SENSITIVITY - The measure of a metal detector's capacityto sense changes in conductivity throughout the patternof detection set forth by the searchcoil configuration. (seeAIR TEST)TARGET - Any buried or hidden object which a metaldetector responds to.VOLUME CONTROL - A metal detector control whichregulates the loudness of target response.4

CONTROLSTMinnovative treasure hunting conceptsHeadhunterPirate4 5 6337821OFF4 5 6782199010VOL10DISCHEADHUNTER PIRATE model has two controls for themicro-encapsulated circuitry located in one sealed earcupof the headphones. Batteries are found in the otherearcup and are user accessible. The Discrimination (DISC) control has “stay-put”segmented position adjustments. The Volume (VOL)control adjustment is continuous and not segmented.Segmented controls allow the operator to makeadjustments without removing the headphones to viewthe position numbers. Once discrimination points arelearned, the operator simply moves the control to the zerostop position and counts the segment clicks to make thedesired adjustment. This only requires learning where thetwo controls are located and the starting points of eachcontrol. The control earcup should be worn on the side ofthe head opposite the arm used to sweep the searchcoilrod — thus giving a free hand to comfortably makeadjustments. Obviously the Volume control is set to theuser’s preference and does not require a secure position. The “stay-put” segmentation of the Discrimination controlis the most user critical. Having this control accidentallylose adjustment could possibly make you lose somevaluable targets if set too high.5

DISCRIMINATION POINTSBench test your detector in an area free of metal and electricalinterference. For each item, return the DISC control to “0” androtate the knob while passing each item below the searchcoil.Stop the knob when the item no longer signals or the soundcharacter becomes broken. This number will be a discriminationreference point. It will not be possible for you to test all items onthe list, but this will give you an idea what different levels ofdiscrimination will do to your target. The items below are inorder of conductivity. OPERATIONOperating Instructions:The HEADHUNTER PIRATE metal detector is one of thesimplest metal detectors to use. It employs fullyautomated, ground balanced motion-discriminationcircuitry. The searchcoil must be in slight motion tomaintain audible target signal. The following is the basicstartup procedure for the PIRATE.1. Turn the HEADHUNTER PIRATE power ON. Set Volumeto a level where you can hear target signalscomfortably. This can be accomplished by passing a coinback and forth under the searchcoil.2. Your HEADHUNTER PIRATE is equipped with a quality"stay put" segmented potentiometer for theDiscrimination control. The Volume control is acontinuous turn control.3. The next adjustment will be setting the Discriminationlevel. After learning where unwanted items will bediscriminated out, you can adjust this before startingyour hunt. If you want to change Discrimination levelsonce operating without having to view the control, justsimply count knob clicks from the "0" position. Again, bench testing will teach you what click count settingcertain objects are eliminated from audio.4. Swing your coil back and forth slowly over the groundor surf beach. Keep the coil as close to the bottom aspossible. Solid sounding audio signals should always beinvestigated. Pinpointing a target is accomplished byraising the searchcoil off the target and slowing thesweep until the audio signal is centered under the coil inopposing sweep directions.5. Retrieving targets submerged in water is more difficultthan on land. If you are wading in the surf, make sureyou use some kind of sand scoop. Always carry a small"goody" bag to deposit and transport your finds. Pleaseremove and dispose of all trash you find. No one likesdigging it up more than once!7

BATTERIES & MAINTENANCEBattery Replacement:Your HEADHUNTER PIRATE metal detector operateswith two, 9-volt standard batteries (batteries supplied).Hourly use can be extended by using 9V Alkaline batteries. To add or replace batteries on the PIRATE, place acoin into the slot on the earcup and turn until the cup"pops" open exposing the battery compartment. Note theplacement of the worn batteries before removal. Removethe old batteries and insert two fresh 9-Volt batteries intothe connectors. This earcup is O-ring sealed. Be sure to carefully cleanthe O-ring, the groove it resides in and the mating halvesof the earcup. Lubricate O-ring sparingly with siliconegrease only. DO NOT USE PETROLEUM JELLY.After batteries have been installed, carefully align theearcup halves and press until a solid “snap” is heard. Makesure battery connector wires are well inside of the sealarea and do not get pinched on reassembly.Maintenance:1. Always thoroughly rinse your HEADHUNTERPIRATE in fresh water after using it in salt water.2. Store your detector in a cool place.3. Never store it in a manner that it will be subject tovibration or shock.8

TARGET RETRIEVALReprinted with permission from DETECTORIST: A How-To Guide to BetterMetal Detecting by Robert H. stration 7.7AWith your eyes fixed on the ground, cut a three-sided squareapproximately five inches long oneach side around the target center. The fourth uncut side will act as ahinge. This hinge is made so that theplug can be returned to the holewith the proper orientation. However, removing the plug entirelyfrom the ground will not necessarilykill the grass. Grass roots generallygrow downward toward moistureand not sideways. Even if you dosever a few roots, the rest of thegrass in the plug should not diebecause of it. Those detectorists whoscalp roots to remove dirt in searchof a poorly pinpointed coin, or a cointhat is more shallow than originallyperceived, will kill the grass in theplug for sure.Be certain you make these cutsperpendicular to the ground and asdeep as the knife blade will allow.Detectorists who cut shallow conicalplugs fail to realize the importance ofnot doing so. Conical or funnelshaped plugs that are completelyremoved from the ground neverquite go back into the ground thesame way they came out. This ismostly due to a lack of attention bythe cutter. Even if you stomp onthese plugs after they are returnedto the ground, the blade action oflarger mowers can literally suck themback out. Animals can also removeplugs. Properly returned square plugsthat have been cut deep and steepsided have the greatest resistance toremoval.Illustration 7.7BAfter the plug has been cut, carefullygrasp the plug on two sides and pryupward on the third side with theflat of your knife blade or trowel.Fold the plug back over on its hingeto a section of ground cloth. Removedigging tools from the recovery areaand scan the hole and plug todetermine which holds the target.(continued on page 12)11

Detuning the target area in the allmetal mode again will help indeciding the target's whereabouts.Illustration 7.7COften the coin will be visible on thebottom of the plug or in the hole andcan be easily extracted with fingers. If the coin is within the grass rootstructure of the plug, use your probeto locate it carefully. When located, gently separate the dirt and roots toget to the coin directly.CAUTION: Never shake a plug toremove the dirt hiding the coin. Youwill definitely kill both the grass andyour chances for return visits in thefuture.Remember, any loose dirt crumbsshould go on the ground cloth. If thecoin is still in the hole, try to locate itwith the probe. If the coin remainsburied, push your trowel downwardaround the sides of the hole andgently lever the dirt inward on eachplunge. Poorly pinpointed coins andcoins buried on an angle can wind upwith "scars" on their faces if you arenot careful at this step. Remove theloosened dirt from the hole onehandful at a time. Pass the handful ofdirt under the searchcoil restingbeside you. Dump the dirt on theground cloth that does not containthe target, along with any rocks youmay encounter. As an alternative, youmay wish to remove all loose dirt tothe ground cloth first and then scanthe pile with searchcoil until thetarget is found. Before ending therecovery process, remember tocheck the hole again with thesearchcoil for any additional targets.Do so repeatedly until no moretargets can be heard.Illustration 7.7DSlide the ground cloth close to thehole and funnel the loose dirt andstones back into the ground. Often indeep recoveries, returning loose dirtwill fill the hole to the edge and leaveno room for the plug. You mustcompress the loose dirt in the holewith the flat of your trowel bladebefore you can neatly return theplug. When the plug is correctlyreturned, place your foot over it andput all of your weight intocompressing it to ground level. This metal detector has two operation modes: ALL METAL & DISC. ALL METAL - is used to find all kinds of metal targets. DISC - Is used to discriminate the metal type. Set the operation mode to ALL METAL, DISC to counter clockwise end, SENS to high position. Then hold the search coil parallel with the ground about .5 2 inches / 1 5cm above the .

If the detector is set to the ALL METAL target mode, it sounds a single tone when it detects any type of metal. If you set the detector to the DISC or NOTCH modes, the built in audio identification system sounds a unique audio tone for each of three categories of metal. This makes it easier to identify the metal being detected. Tone Detects

without disturbing the routine manufacturing process. For effective detection a metal detector must be designed to ensure metal free product in cost effective manner. To serve this purpose the metal detector used in the pharmaceutical industry must have few basic properties. It should be simple to use, reliable, sensitive, capable to detect .
