Page 2PPGI Research Festival - LinguisticsMaria Ester W. MoritzOctober 31st was an important day for ourmaster’s students at PPGI. They had the opportunity toshare their research projects with UFSC’s academiccommunity. The event was a result of one semester ofhard-working and commitment of our pupils to writethose projects. The course “O texto acadêmico emestudos linguísticos” comprised two parallel strands, one covering the main conventions of academicresearch and writing in English, the other encompassingthe thesis project, and it used process-oriented andgenre-based approaches to help participants produce aquality piece of writing. Additionally, students also hadthe opportunity to discuss the conventions of oralpresentations. At the end of the course, Ana Flávia,Casemiro, Dionatan, Luana, Márcia, Maria Luisa andTatiana masterly presented their research projects andthey are now ready to start and develop their research. We can see their main topics below:Ana Flávia MarcelinoTBLT in PHL context: language learning anddevelopment of intercultural speakers;Casemiro NetoEFL undergratuate students’ response to writtenfeedback provided by a university professor;Dionatan CardozoThe effects of pre-reading tasks in L2 readingcomprehension of expository and narrative texts;Luana BaldisseraApp resources for developing English as an L2: a focuson pronunciation;Márcia FloresBrazilian schoolchildren with autism spectrum disorder:an analysis of instruments for assessing linguistic skills;Maria Luisa Baez(De)Criminalizing abortion: a critical analysis ofabortion discourses in the public hearing of ADPF 442;Tatiana RondonSchema activation and working memory: the effect ofdifferent pre-reading activities on pre-intermediate sion.

Page 3X SINPELIzabela O.M. PereiraSINPEL (Seminário Integrado de Pesquisas emLinguística) is an academic event aimed at divulgingongoing research on linguistics and its intersections. Itwas created by students of the PPGLin/UFSC with afirst edition happening in 2007. Since then, SINPEL hasfeatured participations from researchers from UFSC aswell as other Brazilian universities, especially those inthe Southern region of the country. Graduate students atPPGLin have embraced SINPEL's original concept andorganized new editions of the conference eachfollowing year, pursuing greater integration anddialogues with their peers as well as with undergraduateIzabela presenting at X SINPEL.students at UFSC and the external academiccommunity. The tenth edition of SINPEL was held from the12th to the 14th of November and featuredcontributions from fellow graduate students as well asholders of Masters ad PhD titles. The event was verysuccessful and highlighted several relevant topics inlinguistics. I took part in a thematic symposium titled"Um estudo socio-semântico das campanhas a favor econtra o BREXIT." All in all, SINPEL was very wellorganized and all the participants contributed positivelyto the event's sucess.

Page 421th InPlaFrancineide Fatima Davies dos SantosThe 21th InPla—Intercâmbio de Pesquisas emLinguística Aplicada—took place at PUC-SP in SaoPaulo city, from December 10th to 13th, the conferencewas generally a success, considering its magnitude andhuge number of participants from all over the countryand people from other countries, as for instance Chileand USA, that attended the event. The conference is directed to all linguisticsresearchers; however, it focuses on the appliedlinguistics field. At the conference this year, the topic‘possible/impossible discussions’ was at the center ofthe debate in order to enlighten the discussionconcerning the possible interfaces that can be drawnbetween applied linguistics and other areas oflinguistics research. For that reason, the first lecture atthe conference brought Jesse Egbert (Northern ArizonaUniversity, USA) to open the plenary with thepresentation ‘Triangulating Corpus Linguistics withother Research Methods to Answer Big Questions inApplied Linguistics’, this lecture allowed the attendeesto think about the possibilities of interfaces that can bethought when building the research’s design. This mayenrich the approach researchers have to their maintopics and build inferences of new fruitful perspectivesthat can be taken into account. The Conference hosted communications andtalks with researchers from all over the country. Therewere three days laden with critical debates on analysesdiscourse, didactic materials, and bilingualism inBrazil, teaching methodologies, practices andpsycholinguistics, among others. It is interesting toacknowledge the strong attendance from researchersand professors from PPGI program at the Conference, who participated in different instances of the event. Thetalks in my room concerned in psycholinguisticsapproaches to education and brought researches todiscuss the importance of better activate cognitivemechanisms in students’ daily basis. My talk concernedin a preliminary analysis of my master’s research, inwhich I investigated syntactic priming effects during L2speech production. Finally, I want to thank the PPGI program forsupporting the participation in this well-known event, which could contribute to my growth as a noviceresearcher.

Page 5III Jornada do Núcleo de Estudos Irlandeses da UFSCBeatriz Kopschitz BastosThe III Jornada do Núcleo de Estudos Irlandesesda UFSC (UFSC’s Third Annual Irish Studies Forum),organized by Beatriz Kopschitz Bastos, AlinneFernandes and Maria Rita Drumond Viana, was held inthe Henrique Fontes Auditorium of the University’sSchool of Communication and Arts (CCE), onNovember 7th, 2018, with the presence of the ConsulGeneral of Ireland, Mr. Barry Tumelty. The theme ofthe event – (Con)figurations of Families in IrishLiterature, Theatre and Film – in tune with recentliterary and cultural criticism in the field of IrishStudies, aimed to strengthen critical evaluation of therole of the family in contemporary literary and culturaldiscourse in Ireland. This Forum’s contribution to contemporarydiscussion on the theme of the family in Irish literatureand culture took the form of two lectures and a series ofreadings. The lectures were: “The Empty Family? NewConfigurations of Kinship and Community inContemporary Irish Short Fiction”, by ProfessorMargaret Kelleher, of University College Dublin; and“Bad Parenting: Configurations of Family inContemporary Irish Theatre”, by Dr Ian Walsh, fromthe National University of Ireland Galway. Thereadings were given by the award-winning journalistand writer Sinéad Gleeson, from The Long Gaze Back, the collection of thirty short stories written by womenthat was chosen for the project Dublin: One City OneBook, in 2018.Like those of the previous two years, this year’sForum provided academic exchange between, on theone hand, our students and colleagues from UFSC inBrazil, and on the other, scholars and writers fromIreland – thus at the same time reaffirming anddeveloping the process of internationalization at UFSC.Undergraduates, and PGI and PGET postgraduatestudents currently working on Irish Studies researchpresented papers, and posters, and had the opportunityto discuss their research with the guest speakers fromIreland. The Forum had the invaluable support of: theEmbassy and the Consulate General of Ireland inBrazil; University College Dublin; the NationalUniversity of Ireland Galway; SECARTE, PPGI andDLLE at UFSC – and a vibrant committee of studentsassisting in its organization!

Page 6Ti OchôaA non-binary gender reading of Angels in AmericaI am Ti Ochôa and I ampresently part of theresearch line "EstudosLiterários e Culturais,"under the supervision ofEliana Ávila. I conduct amaster's research titled "Anon-binary gender readingof Angels in America."This play, written by TonyKushner in the beginning of the 1990s, deals with themarginalization that gay men who live with HIVexperience, and presents us New York in the middle ofthe decade of 1980. The play deals especially withsubjects such as racism, sexism and the religious andpolitical convervatism of that period. In my research, Iread Kushner's text particularly from a non-binarygender perspective. But what does a "non-binary genderperspective" mean? As a non-binary transsexual personand one of the only transsexuals in PPGI, I perceivethat the binary split that produces people as either manor women does not contemplate me nor cover myexperience. Indeed, people who do not identify with thetraditional gender categories are often more prone tosuffer erasure. With this in mind, I explore in myanalysis not only the binary structure of gender that canbe identified in the play – which presents characterswho are either men or women –, but also theheterosexual/homosexual dualism that can be seen aswell. Such a structure is apparenly fixed, but I attemptto destructure it in order to foreground the constitutiveinstabiltiy of binary hierarchies. For instance, in spite ofa hegemonic division of gender, the characterization ofsome characters are irreducible to the binaries of genderand sexuality, and the same can be said of the notesKushner added to the play. Besides, I endeavor tounderstand throughout the research the intersection ofrace, gender, class, sexuality, and seropositivenesswithin the text. Finally, in proposing a non-binaryreading of the text, I also call attention to the discussionconcerning the possibility of imagining a differentgendering of words in language, beyond masculine andfeminine, so that I can bring it to my writing.

Page 7William Weber Wanderlinde"The Devil’s party:" Irony in William Blake’s The Songs of Innocence and of Experienceand The Marriage of Heaven and HellMy research is called“‘The Devil’s party:’IronyinWilliamBlake’s The Songs ofInnocenceandofExperience and TheMarriage of HeavenandHell.”Myobjective is to look athow irony works inthese two books: TheSongs of Innocence and of Experience (1794) and TheMarriage of Heaven and Hell (1790). Both of them areearly works of Blake’s career, and are also among themost well known books written by him.Songs, which is divided in two sections, “Songs ofInnocence” and “Songs of Experience,” does not seemat a first reading to be an ironic work, specially the firstsection. The poetry in “Songs of Innocence” is simple, with poems resembling nursery rhymes. A tone ofconfidence and positiveness is felt in this section, whichis contrasted with the melancholy of “Songs ofExperience.” The states depicted in the sections,Innocence and Experience, seem to be ironically stated,so that both the joie de vivre of “Songs of Innocence”and the sadness of “Songs of Experience” are at thesame time positively portrayed and criticized. This wayof understanding the irony can be linked with theconcept of romantic irony, developed by Germanromantics, mainly Friedrich Schlegel, around the sametime the book was being written. In The Marriage, the tone of irony can begrasped much more readily. While most critics, such aseminent Blake scholars Northrop Frye and David V.Erdman, agree with the intense presence of irony in thisbook, the ways ironies are perceived are not agreedupon. While Frye, for instance, focus on Blake’s oeuvreas a whole to explain them, Erdman presents a historicreading. Further research also refined their readings, changing again how the ironies are grasped.Right now I am working on my theoreticalframework, reading about romantic irony, a conceptthat will be crucial in my research, since from the typesof irony I studied so far it seems the most useful toconfront with both books.
