PrefaceThe Tapestry of HistoryVirgil Talbot wrote in his book that history is a giantnever-ending tapestry with threads weaving in and out of thecenturies, the scenes changing constantly, and new charactersreplacing the old. Family History is the history about ourpeople, \Vhethcr they were rich or poor, famous or infamous, powerful or humble. It is many nationalities, shades ofcolor, languages and religions. iu.orlgrm:1sSuch is the Snodgrass Family History. It reaches backthrough the pages of ti1ne to over ten generations that \.Vekno\v. If our research is correct our direct lineage goes backto William Snodgrass \vho was born in 1697 (One sourcesays he was born in 1704) in Tyrone, Ireland. William111Snodgrass was my 5 great grandfather on my mother'sside of the family. My mother was Mae Elizabeth Rauchand her mother was Winifred '"Winnie'' Lou Snodgrasswho was my grandmother. In this book l will present thedescendants of this William Snodgrass.Countless hours of research into every source at our disposalleads us to believe that wc can trace our lineage back toWilliam Snodgrass. It is only fair that we point out thatthere are some that doubt this lineage. The question ariseswith what some say; is that the Snodgrass family was fromScotland not Ireland and we must remember that thisinformation comes from many sources in the 1600 to l 700'stime frame so there are many chances that the information·can have errors.t- t-i:d-la n rl ,The Snodgrass Family Crest from Scotland. Our research says that the Snodgrass family originated InScotland. Possibly some moved on to Ireland during variouswars with England and clannish wars in Scotland. SomeSnodgrass Families came directly to this country fromScotland and Ireland and it is believed that they first settledin Pennsylvania and later moved to Virginia.about 1870 to see if his health would improve. They decidedto go to Cabin Creek. Johnson County, Arkansas. They soldmost of their household furnishings and loaded what wasleft of their processions in two wagons with two good teamsof horses and their children.Perhaps in time further research will definitely prove ordisprove the Snodgrass Family place of origin. Until thenwe present what we honestly believe to be our correct lineageparticularly from the William Snodgrass who was born in1697 (1704) in Tyrone County, Ireland. William died 25Sep l 766 in Black Creek, Berkeley County, Virginia. Note:Berkeley County, Virginia is no\v in West Virginia justsouth of Pennsylvania.William and Winnie Snodgrass and their children traveledoverland to Chattanooga, Tennessee. From Chattanooga theyloaded their teams of horses, wagons and possessions on aflatboat boat and floated down the Tennessee River to theOhio River to Paducah, Kentucky. They then floated downto the Mississippi River and later changed tu the ArkansasRiver. They then traveled by steamboat up the ArkansasRiver to Big Piney River, near Clarksville, JohnsonCounty, Arkansas.William Snodgrass was married in 1727 in MartickTownship, Lancaster, Pennsylvania to Catherine JanePatterson who \Vas born in 1705 possibly in Virginia. Shewas the daughter of John Patterson. Our ancestral queststarts from this family to the Snodgrass families \.vho1nigrated to Washington County, Arkansas.Whatever the outcome of future research, our ancestors werean amalgamation of hardy people who migrated fromScotland and Ireland across the Atlantic tu possiblyPennsylvania and on to the Virginia \Vilderness of Botetourtthat he and his wife Winifred ''Winnie" Norton Bradley(Snodgrass) decided to move west alter the Civil War in06/30/01Winnie had several cousins living in Cabin Creek, Arkansas.William and Winnie farmed and lived near Clarksville atCabin Creek. Johnson County, Arkansas for about t\vo orthree years. Their daughter Martha Alice Snodgrass died in1873 at Cabin Creek. After Martha Alice died William andWinnie decided to n1ove again. They decided to move nearLincoln, Washington County, Arkansas. Our SnodgrassFamily History resides 1nainly here in Washington County.Arkansas.Here the pattern changed and descendants scattered to thefour winds. Today, descendants of William Snodgrass livein virtually every state of the Union and some foreignThe Norwood Family HistoryPage ii

Prefacecountries.1Research and Notesllistory is fact and speculation. The two should be keptapart, but some time facts cannot be discovered \vithoutspeculation. Sometimes we have speculated. but \VC havetried to distinguish between speculation and fact. Manysources of information used in our research arc the result ofhours of research at home, on the Internet and in librariesacross the United States. Many relatives, friends and totalstrangers have contributed. This book is also dedicated to my 1' cousin and great friendWilliam Hardy Rauch and his special wife Ruth Ellen(Davis) Rauch \hrho encouraged and advised me to write thisbook and accompanied me on 1nany research trips and helpedgather the vast amount of infonnation and materials requiredin writing and publishing this book.l would also like to dedicate this book to the manySnodgrass Ancestors who made their contributions throughthe centuries. Vv'ithout them there would be no history. This is your history. Where it ends depends upon you. Please begin your own family history. You should recordbirths, deaths. marriages and other pertinent information andhelp correct any information that might not be correct in thisbook. Whether you use this book or some other methoddoes not matter. What is important is that you should startsuch a history. Do it now! Too much history has been lostalready. My book is laid out and \Vritten using the Church of JesusChrist of Latter Day Saints Personal Ancestral FileSoftware, Pedigree Charts of the Snodgrass line are shownalong with a Descendant Outline of the descendants of theWilliam Snodgrass family. In another section of this book Ihave written in Register Form about the ancestors ofWilliam Snodgrass. l have provided a brief example of howthe Registry system works for those who are not familiarwith it.Dedication and ThanksRegister Numbering ExampleThis book is dedicated to my sweet mother Mae Elizabeth(Rauch) Norwood, who planted the seeds of genealogy inme and provided me with the drive to enhance the fruits ofher earlier genealogy work. l also dedicate this book to myvery loving and special wife, Joan Evelyn (Brown)Norwood. Joan encouraged me and never discouraged me onmy genealogy efforts. She was my constant companion andchief researcher and helpmate during all of our years togetherso that we could become closer to our ancestors. The following example shows the most common (excludingHenry numbers) numbering conventions that can appear inthe register report. The register may print some or all ofthese numbers and symbols depending upon whiuh reportoptions that are selected. There were many other persons in which this book isdedicated. I would especially like to thank Burlene (Brown)Hilton for her help and the many resource materials inwhich she provided and are used in this book.64. William James ' SNODGRASS (Sr.) (14] (Thomas Lafayette,'During the \Vriting and assembling of the material for thisbook I met a truly professional genealogist. lie was VirgilTalbot. My wife Joan and I were privileged to spend aSunday with him doing research on my Rauch, Snodgrassand Talbot families. Virgil wrote two books that were veryhelpful in completing my book. The books were "TheTalbots, Centuries of Service" and ''A Bit of History".Virgil expressed that he would be honored for Joan and incto use any of the information in our book that he provided.A short time after that delightful Sunday, Virgil passedaway to be with his beloved wife Avis West Kirk (Talbot). This book is also dedicated to Clara Bee (Risley)Snodgrass \vho wrote the original Snodgrass Book fromwhich much of the information contained in this book wastaken. Without Clara's hard work in putting together the firstbook, I 1nost likely would not have written this book. Claradied 18 Dec 1993. Clara's son Jerry Eugene Risley mostgenerously agreed to help me and provide materials from hismother's original book so that this book would become areality. Thanks Jerry.
