GlossaryNew to PTC Windchill? Here are some importantterms and concepts you should know:Actions: Performing a task against an object ortable in PTC Windchill is called an action. Actionsare available from icons on a table’s toolbar, theActions menu on information pages and toolbars, and right-click Actions menu on rows in tables.CAD documents: CAD files (for example, modelsor drawings) are managed in PTC Windchill asCAD documents. CAD documents and their structures can be associated to PTC Windchill parts. ACAD document is the CAD designer’s view of thedesign, and a PTC Windchill part is the rest ofthe enterprise’s view of the same design. For example, AML/AVL information is only associatedwith the corresponding PTC Windchill part. Thisassociative relationship enables CAD structuresto automatically build part structures. Top-downdesign (TDD) allows part structures to buildCAD structures.Change Management: PTC Windchill functionality that manages issues and improvements toproducts and processes via a robust, closed-loopsystem. Changes can be identified, tracked andviewed across the enterprise. The entire enterprise can then assess how these changes inproduct data will affect different teams.Commonspace: A collective term for the data thatis not in a user’s workspace. The Folder Browseris PTC Windchill’s equivalent of the commonspacein Pro/INTRALINK .Page 16 of 16 PTC Windchill 11 Quick Start GuidePTC Windchill 11 Quick Start GuideContexts: Contexts can be thought of as separatedata vaults. There are three main types of contexts in PTC Windchill: Products: A product is typically thought of asthe physical item manufactured and sold tocustomers. PTC Windchill expands the concept of a product to include the environmentin which users collaborate to develop parts. Libraries: A library is typically a vault forcommon parts, models and documents. Projects: A project is a virtual location intowhich you invite people to collaborate as aproject team. Projects are ad-hoc collaboration spaces, as opposed to Products andLibraries, which allow you more control ofproduct development processes.Information Pages: An information page is usedto access information about, and perform actionson, a particular object.Objects: An object is a generic name for businessdata that is added to, and managed in, the PTCWindchill system. For example, a part, a CADdocument, and a PTC Windchill document areall PTC Windchill objects.Occurences: An occurrence in PTC Windchill is adatabase object that stores information about onenamed usage of a part within a part structure.Tables: Information about multiple objects iscommonly presented in tables. Because sometables can contain large quantities of data, youcan define a view to display just the objects andcolumns that you want to see.Versions, Revisions, and Iterations:RevisionIterationWhen you save an object inPTC Windchill for the firstA.1time, you create the firstversion of it. In Windchill,Versionmost objects are assigneda revision and iteration.Together, the revision and iteration define theobject’s version. For example, if A.1 is the version,A is the revision and 1 is the iteration.Workspace: A workspace is a private area whereyou can manage your CAD work and perform CADdata management operations. 2015, PTC Inc.
