1Work Healthand SafetyPlanThe UNSW Work Health and SafetyPlan (2020–2023) is aligned withUNSW’s strategic priorities andthemes as outlined in the UNSW2025 Strategy.This plan will assist UNSW in preventing workrelated injury and occupation disease for UNSWworkers, students and visitors, meet its duty ofcare as and employer and as a strategic enabler tooperational effectiveness and sustainability; peopleand culture; and a world-class environment for ourstudents, workers and visitors.

2What do we meanby Work Healthand Safety?This Work Health and Safety Plan setshealth and safety objectives for UNSWover the next five years. It is linked tothe UNSW 2025 Strategy, as well asUNSW’s Health and Safety Policy andFaculty/Division Strategic/OperationalPlans.This plan has been developed in line with theWork Health and Safety Legislation requirements,Australian/New Zealand Standards ISO45001:2018, Occupational Health and SafetyManagement Systems and past health and safetyperformance.

3UNSW’scommitmentto safetyOur objective is that no person will come to harm whileworking, studying or visiting UNSW. The University iscommitted to providing a safe work environment thatpromotes health and safety, is accessible, and contributesto the wellbeing of the UNSW community.The following values form the basisof achieving UNSW Work Health andSafety Plan and Policy objectives: We are committed to ensuring the health, safetyand wellbeing of UNSW community. Everyone acknowledges and engages in theirsafety responsibility and duty. Injuries can be prevented. Where hazards can’t beeliminated, they are controlled to provide a harmfree working and learning environment. We engage to manage our risks effectively througha well-established safety and wellbeing culture,robust enough to ensure that if something does failit ‘Fails Safe’. Communication and consultation are central toworking together for a safer, healthier working andlearning environment.

4PurposeThe purpose of UNSW’s Work Health and SafetyPlan is to: achieve systematic and sustainableimprovement of health and safety for workersand visitors at UNSW respond to and meet our legal requirements give direction to achieve the UNSW WorkHealth and Safety Policy objectives outline clear responsibilities to all relevantfunctions and levels at UNSW demonstrate UNSW management’scommitment to health, safety and wellbeing.ScopeThis document applies to all workers and visitors to anyUNSW campus, or premises controlled by UNSW.It also applies to UNSW staff and students who workat premises controlled by other persons conducting abusiness or undertaking unless other agreements are inplace that cover safety duty and responsibilities.

Improve UNSW’s Health Safety and Wellbeingculture through transition to a behavioural safetyapproach and five-step safety system.5. Incorporation of safety and wellbeing intodesign at UNSW.6. Establish UNSW wide events managementprogram.7.Review UNSW’s online contractor managementsafety management system against 45001requirements and complete Phase 3 roll-out toFaculties and Divisions.3. UNSW’s health and safety systems havea measurable impact in protecting UNSWcommunity’s health, safety and wellbeing.4. Review and improve road and pedestriansafety across UNSW campuses.Where required, individual strategies and programs will be developedto assist in meeting the objectives identified above. These individualstrategies and programs will respond to legal requirements, set indicators,identify more detailed activities, timeframes, resourcing, accountability/responsibilities and outline relevant legislation, Australian Standards andindustry codes of practice.

6Responsibilitiesand prioritiesWork Health and Safety Plan delivery will often be inpartnership with Faculties and Divisions, our UNSWleadership, managers, workers, other members of theUniversity community and government providers.The President and Vice-Chancellor is responsible for ensuring that theHealth and Safety Strategic objectives and targets outlined in this Work, andHealth and Safety plan are appropriately resourced and met. Deans andDivisional Heads will assist the President and Vice-Chancellor in meetinghis responsibilities by incorporating the Health and Safety targets into theirFaculty and Division operational plans.ConsultationThis Plan will be distributed for consultation in accordance withUNSW’s Governance process and HS339 Health and SafetyConsultation Guideline.

7Monitoringand reviewUNSW’s Level 1 Health, Safety andEnvironment Policy and StrategicPlanning Committee will review theWork, Health and Safety Plan progressvia quarterly and annual progressreports.The President and Vice-Chancellor, along withUNSW management, will review the performanceof the University in meeting the Health and Safetyobjectives and provide relevant reporting to theUniversity Council.
