Philosophical Outcomes DefinedHuman Flourishing is a life-long endeavor to achieve self-actualization and fulfillmentwithin the context of a larger community of individuals, each with the right to pursue hisor her own such efforts. Human flourishing encompasses the uniqueness, dignity, diversity, freedom, happiness, and holistic well-being of the individual within the largerfamily, community, and population. The practical nurse assists the individual inreclaiming and/or developing new pathways toward human flourishing.Nursing Judgment encompasses ways that the practical nurse synthesizes patientproblems, issues, and concerns while responding in a knowledgeable and caring mannerto every patient situation. Nurses employ nursing judgment in complex patient caresituations, working with the health care team to ensure health care quality and safety.Essential components of practical nursing judgment include recognizing changes inpatient status, acknowledging uncertainty and seeking assistance about the mostappropriate course of action, accounting for context, and the nurse’s practicalexperience. Making clinical decisions is rooted in the nurse’s theoretical knowledge, ethical perspective, relationship with patients, their caregivers, and community, andunderstanding of the influence of systems on health care outcomes.Professional Identity includes both personal and professional development, involving theinternalization of one’s core values and perspectives, recognized as integral to the artand science of nursing. These core values become self-evident as the nurse learns, gainsexperience, reflects, and grows in the nursing profession. Integral to the developmentof professional identity is the nurse’s commitment to upholding ethical codes ofconduct, advocacy for improved health care access and service delivery for vulnerablepopulations, improved patient outcomes, and the growth and sustainability of thenursing profession.Spirit of Inquiry is a persistent sense of curiosity that informs both learning and practice.A nurse instilled with a spirit of inquiry will raise questions, challenge traditional andexisting practices, and seek creative approaches to problem-solving. A spirit of inquiryin nursing stimulates inquisitive thinking and extends possibilities for discoveringinnovative solutions in both predictable and unpredictable situations.(Based on National League for Nursing Practical/Vocational Program Outcomes, 2014)1/17hb lm7
