The focus of the publicationis centered on providing high school guidance personnel with a primesource of educational information. The changes in this pamphlet are sufficiently major to preclude itsdesignation as a second edition. It should be considered a new publication. Major emphasis is now placed on college offerings, costs, andfinancial aid. A section on approved private vocational schools has beenadded. It is hoped that the new format and the information contained willbe helpful in counseling students in need of occupational and educationalguidance. The information was obtained from the two year colleges of New Yorkand New Jersey. The data have been programmed and encoded and stored onmemory tape for instant print-out. The maintenance of a central depository of information will serve the additional purpose of having up-to-datedata available at all times: Anyone seeking more information on the storeddata should write Dr. Joseph S. Winters, Student Life Department, Boroughof Manhattan Community College, 134 West 51 Street, New York, New York10020.Mrs. Theresa Mack, Associate in the Bureau of Occupational EducationResearch, coordinated the publication of this pamphlet. ! 7,.:334,070,47,Vrq41.1,, ,1307177,PrO,TO THE COUNSELORIt is the belief of the project director that guidance emphasisshould be on clarification of vocational goals and the opportunities forsatisfying vocational needs through educational resources.Effective vocational guidance procedures indicate that informationalmaterials conform to acceptable criteria. Among these criteria, two arecertainly vitally important: the accuracy of the information and theIn this publication, every effort has been madedating of the materials.to ensure both accuracy and currency. The publication is divided into two major areas, one containing analphabetical list of two year colleges in New York and New Jersey, andthe other an alphabetical list of career curriculums. The listing of thecolleges contains basic information designed for screening purposes. That is, the address, tuition costs, financial aid available, and careercurriculums are given for each school. The listings for schools in NewYork begin on pagel and those in New Jersey on page38.There is also an alphabetical listing of curriculums and the schoolsoffering them starts on page 47. Note that all curriculums are dividedinto one of three catagories: Business; Health and Service; Technologies. These divisions may appear arbitrary but, it is hoped, not capriciouslySGme of the career programs do not fit easily into a set category.so.For example, Medical Records Technology offered by Bourough of Manhattancombines training in secretarial skills and knowledge of medical practices. The job is clerical since its practitioners are responsible for theItmaintenance of health records and the recording of health information.is, however, technical to a greater degree because of the amount of knowThereledge of medical terminology and practices needed for proficiency.fore, the curriculum is listed under Health and Service. There are other programs that do not lend themselves readily toclassification. Recreation Leadership, for example, might be considereda social service or health occupation. In order not to have a profusionof headings, a Health and Services grouping was used to cover the healthSimitechnologies and those curriculums that train for public service.larly, the Technology section includes not only mechanical and artisticcareers but some gray areas such as Hotel-Motel Management. In contrast to the previous publication,* the stress in this is onThereavailable course offerings rather than on admissions' standards.are three significant factors which determined this action:1.Admission requirements will vary hlra-school with respectto the various degree programs.2.Requirements may be waived by many of the colleges when*Educational Opportunities for the Secondary Occupational ProgramGraduate, February 1966.iv1,,k146,e.roJk - .

-admitting students into special programs such as CollegeDiscovery and SEEK, and even in individual cases. The new SUNY and CUNY Master Plans, with their statedobjectives of open enrollment and with emphasis on remediation, will affect future policies and admissionspatterns.3.Another factor might be added to this list, one that was noted inthe 1966 publication. The non-academic high school student is often leftstranded because he cannot meet a rigid admissions requirement. In asense, the community college is not meeting its responsibility when ithampers the mobility of large segments of the high school population. The failure of fhe student to achieve his highest potential is a nationaleconomic waste and, more important, a source of life frustration to theindividual.ItOne last word on a suggestion for effective use of the material.is vocationally axiomatic that job success and satisfaction will dependto a great extent on the aptitudes and interests of the individual. Theeducational resources information offered here can serve in counseling asEffective careera usefuladjunct to the development of career plans.guidance requires thoughtful counseling, knowledge of the individual, andaccurate and timely educational and occupational information.V'
