The resulting inclusive organizationalclimate promotes the development of broad-mindedmembers of the University who positively influence theirlocal and global communities.History of Stevenson UniversityUniversity Timeline1947Villa Julie College is founded by the Sisters of NotreDame de Namur at "Seven Oaks," an 80-acre estate inGreenspring Valley, formerly the home of the GeorgeCarrell Jenkins family. The College opens its doors onOctober 1, specializing in medical-secretarial training.1954Official approval as a two-year college is granted by theMaryland State Department of Education. In that sameyear, a new classroom facility, Founder's Hall, is opened.1965The College receives Maryland state approval for a childdevelopment program and for transfer programs in thearts and sciences as well as teacher education. Shortlythereafter, the College is granted an "A" rating fortransferability of credits by the American Association ofCollegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.1967Villa Julie becomes an independent institution that is nolonger affiliated with the Catholic Church. Control isvested in a newly formed Board of Trustees comprised ofbusiness, civic, and professional leaders.1971In response to increasing enrollment, the College builds amulti-million dollar complex consisting of an art wing,learning resource center, and student center. Evening andsummer sessions are inaugurated this same year.1972Villa Julie becomes co-educational, admitting its first fulltime male student.1984Villa Julie becomes a four-year college offering abachelor’s degree in computer information systems.1985-1986While the College continues to offer two-year programs,academic offerings are augmented to include new majorsand programs that provided a wider choice ofprofessional career possibilities and support the changingrequirements of the business and professionalcommunities in the region. The concept of careereducation combined with the liberal arts became ahallmark of the College’s philosophy, Pro Discendo, ProVivendo: For Learning, For Living.1988The Middle States Association reaffirms the College’saccreditation, this time as a four-year college offeringbachelor’s and associate’s degrees.1991A cooperative education program is initiated for juniorand senior students, making it possible for them toexperience firsthand a working environment directlyrelated to their fields of study.1993Off-campus housing for students in garden-typeapartments opens a short distance from the College. Thecooperative education program is also expanded andopens to all students in the baccalaureate programs.1994Villa Julie is awarded membership in NCAA Division III.1995The College begins the first phase of the construction ofan Academic Center, Inscape Theatre, Student Union andgymnasium, and Science Center.1996The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE)grants approval for programs for the preparation ofelementary and early childhood teachers. This was thefirst Maryland education program that fulfilled the newstate MSDE requirements for teacher education.1997The College celebrated its 50th anniversary. TheAcademic Center, Inscape Theatre, and Art Gallery opensin August, and in November, the Student Union andgymnasium opens.

10 Stevenson University Undergraduate Catalog1999President Carolyn Manuszak and Dean Rose Dawsonretire with a combined 65 years of service to Villa JulieCollege.2000The new decade brings the inauguration of Villa Julie'sfifth President, Kevin J. Manning, Ph.D.2001New master’s programs in business technologymanagement and e-commerce are approved by MHEC.2002The School of Graduate and Professional Studies iscreated to accommodate the needs of adult learners.Through this school, adult students could enroll inmaster’s degree programs, evening/weekend bachelor’sdegree programs, or accelerated bachelor’s degreeprograms. Additionally, the College begins offering anaccelerated B.S. to M.S. degree in advanced informationtechnology, enabling students to earn both a bachelor’sand a master’s degree in five years.2003The College breaks ground on its first campus-ownedstudent housing complex in nearby Owings Mills2004Apartment-style housing for 550 students and acommunity center opens in Owings Mills. The collegealso leases classroom space on the same piece of land,allowing students to live and attend classes at the samelocation for the first time in Villa Julie history. Thosemoves, along with the purchase of the former BaltimoreRavens training facility and the office building where thecollege leased classroom and office space, gave Villa Juliemore than 80 acres of land at the Owings Mills campus.In December, Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski visited thecollege to announce nearly 250,000 in federal funds tosupport distance-learning efforts utilizing the VerizonCenter for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. Also in2004, the Board of Trustees begins discussing thepossibility of transitioning to university status because ofthe growth in student population and the addition of asecond campus.2005A bachelor’s degree in medical technology is launched toreplace the two-year medical laboratory technologyprogram.2006Rockland Center opens in October to provide a studentdining center, offices for Student Affairs, and a banquethall for functions organized by on- and off-campusgroups. The Caves Sports and Wellness Center, the newname for the renovated facility formerly used by theBaltimore Ravens, opens. In August, the College beginsoffering an online Master of Science in Forensic Studiesdegree. The Board approves university status inNovember 2006 and later establishes a committee tooversee a study of name options for the institution.2007In May, the College breaks ground on the next newbuilding for Owings Mills, a 60,000-square-foot academicbuilding to house the newly formed Brown School ofBusiness and Leadership. Villa Julie celebrates its growththrough the 2007-2009 academic year as part of its 60thanniversary, inaugurating a new tradition on October 1,2007, by celebrating Founders Day to commemorate theday the College first opened.2008On June 11, 2008, the Board votes unanimously tochange the name of the institution, and the nameStevenson University is unveiled the next morning.2009Additional expansion of the Owings Mills campusincludes Wooded Way, which houses specialized studentlearning communities as well as the Office of CareerServices. In March 2009, the University Restructuring Planis adopted by the Faculty Council. The plan creates fournew schools: the School of Humanities and SocialSciences; the School of Design; the School of Education;and the School of the Sciences. The Brown School ofBusiness and Leadership and the School of Graduate andProfessional Studies remains as originally configured.2010A new entrance to the Owings Mills campus is opened.Stevenson is named to the President’s Higher EducationCommunity Service Honor Roll, the highest federalrecognition a college or university can receive for itscommitment to volunteering, service learning, and civicengagement.2011Two new residence halls welcome an additional 500students on the Owings Mills campus, and the new3,500-seat Mustang Stadium opens in early September.In November 2011, the University purchases the OwingsMills site of Shire Pharmaceuticals. The 28-acre site—which today includes the School of Design and theManning Academic Center—comprises the University’sOwings Mills North location.2012The University Archives establishes the Maryland BibleSociety Collection at Stevenson to house the society’shistoric 400-year-old first edition of the King James Bible.In December 2012, the Greenspring Valley Orchestra,conducted by Stevenson music professor Robert Suggs,celebrates its 10th Anniversary Concert.2013The School of the Sciences hosts the inaugural DellLecture in honor of Stevenson trustee Samuel M. Dell IIIand his wife Geraldine and awards the first DellScholarship for outstanding Stevenson seniors studyingbiology, chemistry, and mathematics. The men’s lacrosseteam wins the NCAA 2013 Division III NationalChampionship game, beating the Rochester Institute ofTechnology’s Tigers at Philadelphia’s Lincoln FinancialField on May 26.

The Stevenson Approach 112014Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak visits campus toaddress a crowd of middle school, high school, andStevenson students. In April, Stevenson unveils the iconic12-foot-tall, bronze mustang statue, "Victory," outside ofMustang Stadium. The University opens an Athletics Hallof Fame, located in the Owings Mills Gymnasium, whichis later named in honor of Dick Watts, the University’sformer Director of Physical Education.2015The new School of Nursing and Health Professions iscreated, comprising the Department of Nursing and theMedical Laboratory Science Program, bringingStevenson's number of schools to seven.2016President Manning announces his plan to retire after 16years of leadership. In August, the university dedicatesthe new 200,000-square-foot academic building atOwings Mills North as the Kevin J. Manning AcademicCenter (MAC). Stevenson also receives naming gifts fortwo of schools housed in the MAC: the Sandra R. BermanSchool of Nursing and Health Professions and the BeverlyK. Fine School of the Sciences.2017Stevenson opens the Center for Student Success on theOwings Mills Campus to provide student resources andacademic support services, including the Office ofStudent Success, the John L. Stasiak Academic Link, andthe Experiential Learning Center. In March 2017, theBoard concludes its presidential search and names ElliotHirshman, Ph.D., President of San Diego State University(SDSU), as the new President of Stevenson as of July2017. The School of Graduate and Professional Studies'name is changed to Stevenson University Online.2018In January, the Garrison Hall Student Activities Commonsopens. The commons includes rooms for student clubsand activities, clubs' sports offices, three meeting rooms,a fitness center, and a console video gaming room. TheCenter also serves as the home for Stevenson’s eSportsteam with a dedicated eSports room. Work is completedon the Quad, a green space connecting the School ofBusiness and Leadership, Garrison Hall, and RocklandCenter. In the fall, the Reading Room is opened inGarrison Hall, giving students a quiet area for studying.The University’s first Professional Minors are offered inmanagement and organization leadership,entrepreneurship and small business development,human resources, real estate, and software design andcoding.2019The University introduces two new undergraduateprograms, Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics andBiomedical Engineering, starting in Fall 2019. InNovember, Stevenson senior Patrick Watson crosses thefinish line at the 2019 NCAA DIII Cross CountryChampionships, becoming the first student-athlete inMustang Athletics history to capture an NCAA individualnational championship. In the fall, Stevenson celebratesits 25th anniversary in NCAA athletics. Athletic DirectorBrett Adams, who came to Villa Julie in 1994 as the firstfull-time Director of Athletics and men's basketball coach,is admitted to the Stevenson Hall of Fame, honoring hispivotal role in the growth of Mustang Athletics.2020In February, Stevenson announces that it receives a 2million naming gift from the Philip A. Zaffere Foundationfor the new library to be constructed on the Owings Millscampus. The university also receives a gift from facultymember Dennis Starliper to create an Applied FinanceLab in the Brown School of Business and Leadership. InMarch, Stevenson announces the launch of its firstdoctoral program, the Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.)Clinical Psychology. On March 16, Stevenson transitionsundergraduate programs to online remote learning inresponse to the COVID-19 pandemic. On Sept. 25,Stevenson assumes ownership of Parcels 1 and 2 of theformer Rosewood Center property after concluding itsagreement with the State of Maryland. Under the OwingsMills East, LLC, the property will be developed as anathletic and recreational hub providing space for theexpansion of Stevenson’s current facilities.
