What was the most impactful experience youhad as an NUS Business School student?During my final year, my project group built asimple facial recognition programme. It was theculmination of a semester of gruelling work.We had to chart out a development plan, whichincluded how to utilise the raw data amongst otherthings. Applying what we learnt in the module, wemanaged to build a model within R (a codinglanguage) that could identify each team member’sface with over 90% accuracy! We even won firstprize in the Intra-school Analytics Competitionjudged by an independent panel, beating teamsfrom other analytics modules! How and why did you decide to specialise inFinance and minor in Economics?JEROME LIM WEI YANGLiquid Strategies Group Trader, GICBBA Class of 2018Master of Technology in Enterprise Business Analytics,NUS Institute of Systems Science“There is little value in trying to chasesomething that you know you have nointerest in. [.] I encourage my juniors todiscover each option for themselves, andchoose the path that best fits them, not tryto fill into the shoes of another.”I think NUS Business provided a holisticintroductory freshman year where I could gothrough different modules to find out which areasof business really interested me before specialisingin subsequent years. My love for finance grewtremendously when I read the module and learntabout the various industry roles. It is (still) amazingto me, how major world events collectivelyinfluence the indices in the financial world. I laterchose to read a minor in Economics to supplementmy knowledge and understanding of finance andfinancial markets. From there, I learned thateconomic events have an intricate relationship withfinancial market movements. Economic theories arealso vital in understanding why certain significantworld events occurred, and how we can learn fromthem to better our future. I must say theintroduction of the Business Economicsspecialisation is a godsend for the NUS BusinessSchool students coming in from 2017 onwards. Now that it is delivered within the same faculty, students benefit more easily from the synergiesbetween these two fields. Why did you decide to pursue the NUS Master ofTechnology in Enterprise Business Analytics lessthan a year after graduating? For me, it is a perfect combination of passion andpracticality. Everything started from freshman year– NUS Business School exposed me to foundationalanalytics modules and I found them reallyinteresting! That sparked my interest in theanalytics space; I went on to take more advancedmodules, where my passion for the subject grewfurther. During my internships in the banking sector,I was further exposed to the realm of MachineLearning and how these models are applied in thefinance industry. I realized that Analytics is alanguage in its own right, and data are the differentalphabets or words that you use to tell your story, justify your case, or make a prediction. It can beapplied anywhere! When I started working, I foundmyself dealing with problems that required thissame skill set. I decided that I wanted a formaleducation and training in the subject matter. Moreover, the Master of Technology in EnterpriseBusiness Analytics emphasises that its curriculumis application-focused, which means in addition tothe theory on why a model works, I can learn thetechniques to quickly apply it in my workplace, orin any other relevant context. Why did you choose to pursue your Mastersdegree with NUS?The choice was easy – I wanted a high-quality,rigorous education that was relatively affordableand taught by a reputable institution. All threecriteria were extremely important for me.Naturally, NUS beat all possible optionshands down.FEATURED ALUMNUS 05

REENA PRIMALANIHi Reena! Why did you decide to pursue a BBAdegree with a specialization in Finance?Do you feel that NUS Business School has taught youto be a better leader?I was initially interested in the BBA degreebecause of the access to broad-based,multidisciplinary learning and the wide arrayof specialisations it offered. Through theopportunity to be exposed to each of the 7specialisations in my first year, I was able todiscover my interest in pursuing a specialisationin Finance. The opportunity to pursue my passions has led meto honing in on key focus areas, where I have had theprivilege to take up leadership roles. Having been a partof the NUS Bizad Club and the Managing Partner of NUSCase Consulting Group, I’ve learnt the ropes of being aconfident leader and developed the ability to solveproblems while effectively communicating with mypeers and fellow leaders. These skills have also beenintegral as I navigate the professional working worldthrough internships.I was deeply intrigued by the Finance modulesoffered and the ability to specialise and deeplyimmerse myself in my field of interest. Throughthe Finance specialisation, I had the opportunityto develop my quantitative knowledge, whilelearning about the biggest movements in thefinancial world.Final Year BBA Student (specialisation in Finance)“This culture has fostered my intrinsicdesire to strive towards my individualgoals beyond my coursework, and hasallowed me to develop a holisticexperience, while immersing myself inexperiences beyond the classroom.”22 FEATURED STUDENTHow has NUS Business School facilitatedyour pursuit of your academic interests?Has participating in Case Competitions anddoing internships helped in this as well? The culture of pursuing individual interestsoutside of the classroom is highly prominentamongst students at NUS Business School. This is encouraged not only by the school, but alsoby seniors and peers. This culture has fostered myintrinsic desire to strive towards my individualgoals beyond my coursework, and has allowed meto develop a holistic experience, while immersingmyself in experiences beyond the classroom. This also led me to discover and pursue a widearray of interests, ranging from CaseCompetitions and internships, where I developedanalytical thinking and problem-solving skillswhich were highly transferrable to my academiccourses as well. What has been your greatest takeaway pursuing thisprogramme so far? Personally and also for the future? My biggest takeaway would be the growth and personaldevelopment from experiences in and out of theclassroom. Through my academic and extra-curricularpursuits, I have been exposed to the corporate world, allowing me to discover my career interests for thefuture. Beyond this, I have been equipped with technicaland quantitative skills, on top of soft skills, which hasgiven me a competitive edge in internships. The widearray of experience through internships has also allowedme to break down the complexity of the world ofbusiness and dive deeper into the ever-changing trendswhich surround it.What is the best advice you have ever received thatyou would like to share with your juniors? The best advice I have received is to live in the moment, while keeping an eye on the long term. There is anincreasing number of opportunities at NUS BusinessSchool, from freshman orientation camps to studentclubs, so don't be afraid to try out new things andexplore the opportunities which are provided to you. Atthe same time, NUS Business School allows you to shapeyour career journey and build your professional networkfor the future, so seize these opportunities as they arise!
