VAL-MS-AR Surge protection and connection for railroadcontrols and signalsData sheet3100 en B1 PHOENIX CONTACT 2013-08-07DescriptionThe VAL-MS-AR (/FM) surge protective device (SPD)modules provide reliable, touch-safe surge protection andtermination specifically for railroad control and signalsystems. The base has independent field input and houseoutput terminals on the same side with ground terminals onthe opposite end. A quick disconnect pin and test pointseparates the field input and house output for simple fielddiagnosis and insulation resistance tests.Compliant with AREMA C & S recommended practices, theVAL-MS-AR (/FM) replaces the stud and nut terminalstyle connections used in the past with a modern alternativethat is easy to install, test and repair in the event of adamaged surge protection plug.In addition to the standard VAL-MS-AR , the VAL-MSAR /FM provides a remote monitoring function that signalsa remote device through a set of dry contacts, providingimmediate notification when a surge protection plug isdamaged or missing.VAL-MS-AR T1/T2 (/FM) modules are high-capacity SPDfor Type 1 lightning, as well as for Type 2 switching surgecurrents. VAL-MS-AR 8Testing/Maintenance8.28.1Diagnostic disconnectionThe plug has a visual status indicator. If the window is green,it is functioning. If it is red, the plug must be removed andreplaced.WARNING:Always disconnect power to the device beforemoving the disconnect button. Arc flash mayoccur.Plug replacementTo replace plug:1. Squeeze the tabs on each end of the plug and pull itstraight out of the base.2. Obtain a replacement plug of the same rating.Each plug is keyed in a specific way. If the keywayis not the same as the plug removed, it will not fitinto the base.3.Figure 7 Orient the plug properly with the base, making sure thekeyway aligns with the key slot in the base. Push theplug straight into the base until the retaining tabs oneach end of the plug snap into the base.Test equipment field connectionLift the orange button to disconnect the circuit.
