MicroStrategy VisualizationsReference GuideBubble Grid WidgetVisualization GoalThe main aim of the Bubble Grid widget is toconvey information in a fashion that an analystcan identify important trends and anomalies withrespect to total contribution of accompanyingdata at a single glance. In this widget, the metricvalues are plotted as bubbles of different colorsand sizes. The colors and sizes of the bubblesrepresent the values of two distinct metrics on thewidget template. Each bubble is displayed at theintersection of two different attribute elements.Report Objects required for Grid/GraphPlace two attributes, custom groups, orconsolidations on the Grid/ Graph’s rows: Itgenerates Bubbles at the intersections of theelements from these objects. Elements from thefirst object (starting from left) are displayed on theX-axis of the widget. This object represents oneof the business areas that can be analyzed in thewidget. In order to analyze data along the X-axiswith respect to time, we have to use time-basedattribute such as Hour, Day, or Month.Elements from the second attribute are displayedon the Y-axis of the widget. This attribute reprewww.infocepts.com1

sents another business area that can be analyzedin the widget.Place at least two metrics on the columns: Thevalues of these two metrics produce the bubbles inthe widget, as described below –The first (the one at extreme left) metricdetermines the size of the bubbles. The smallermetric values produce the smaller bubbles in thewidget while the larger metric values produce thelarger bubbles. – The second metric determinesthe color of the bubbles. For example, if Profit isthe second metric on the columns, the color of thebubbles depicts the range of profit values. The additional metrics are displayed in tooltipswhen the analyst brings the cursor over a bubblein MicroStrategy Web.Note: This widget requires MicroStrategy 9.3Microcharts WidgetVisualization Goal:The Microcharts widget consists of compactrepresentations of data that allow analysts toquickly visualize the trends in data. Microchartsdisplay information in such a manner that a usercan determine the trend of a metric over time orhow a metric is performing compared to forecastedfigures, in a single glance. The Microcharts widgetis useful for this purpose because individualMicrocharts can display the attribute and metricdata in a small graph that would otherwise bedisplayed as a single value in a grid report cell.Report Objects required for Grid/Graph:Following the steps below ensures that thewidget can display all the three Microcharts (bar, sparkline, and bullet). These steps also enable the2www.infocepts.comuser to display or hide any of the Microchart types. To display all three Microchart types, place at leastseven metrics on the columns, as follows:– The first (left-most) metric determines the heightof the bars in the bar Microcharts and the peakpoints in the Sparkline Microcharts.– The second metric creates the horizontalreference lines that are displayed in the SparklineMicrocharts.– The third metric determines the length ofthe performance measure bar in the bulletMicrocharts. The bar represents the actual metricvalue.– The fourth metric determines the maximumpossible values in the bullet Microcharts.– The fifth metric determines the right-mostboundary of the first color band, Band 1, in thebullet Microcharts.– The sixth metric determines the right-mostboundary of the second color band, Band 2, in theBullet Microcharts.– The seventh metric determines the value of thevertical reference line in the Bullet Microcharts, which is typically the target value for the metric.– Any additional metrics are displayed in the columns of the widget, after the Microcharts and theirassociated metrics.Note: This widget requires MicroStrategy 9.3

Media WidgetThe Media widget allows you to present a varietyof media, such as video, audio, images, or websitecontent, on your dashboard. You can include media in the widget to provide background information about data or instructions on how to use thedashboard. You can also use the Media widget tosimply enhance the look and feel of a dashboard.By using dynamic URLs driven by a selector inthe dashboard, the user can configure the Mediawidget to play a media file based on any attributein your dashboard.Note: This widget requires MicroStrategy 9.3RSS Reader WidgetThe RSS Reader widget helps provide a 360-degree view of your business by allowing you tocompare and contrast the data in your dashboardwith information from external news feed sources. The widget retrieves news from an RSS news feedand displays it alongside the other components ofyour dashboard. You can use these widgets on adashboard to view and update your favorite RSSnews feeds as you analyze grids, graphs, andother objects in the dashboard.By using dynamic URLs driven by a selector in thedashboard, you can configure the RSS Readerwidget to automatically display news related to anyattribute in your dashboard.Weighted List Viewer WidgetVisualization Goal:The Weighted List Viewer combines the data visualization techniques of thresholds and graphicalweighting into a single visualization that displayshow the items within a portfolio are performing.Much like a “heat map,” it is intended to show theweighted performance of a portfolio, at a singleglance. This could be a portfolio of stocks or theentries in a sale pipeline report.Thresholds in the widget highlight rows based onthe value of a metric. The rows are also orderedautomatically so that metrics that are performingwell are at the top and metrics that are performingpoorly are at the bottom. In addition, a stacked barchart is included next to the grid; it indicates therelative contribution, or weight, of each row.Note: This widget requires MicroStrategy 9.3Report Objects required for Grid/Graph:Place at least one attribute on the rows: Theattribute’s elements are displayed in the gridrows of the widget. For example, if you place theRegion attribute on the rows, each region is listedin the grid in the widget, with corresponding metricvalues on the right and a contribution graph on theleft.Place at least two metrics on the columns: Thevalues of these metrics are displayed in the gridrows of the widget, along with the attribute. Themetric data and corresponding colors displayedwww.infocepts.com3

in the widget reflect the performance of differentattribute elements.– The first metric on the columns is the thresholdmetric. This metric is used to set the color of therows. These colors are also displayed in the gridon the right side of the widget.– The second metric on the columns is the weighting metric that determines the percent-to-totalvalue for each business attribute. It is used to setthe relative size of each section of the contributiongraph on the left side of the widget.– Any additional metrics are displayed in the grid, but do not have any effect on the threshold colorsor contribution graph on the left side of the widget.Note: This widget requires MicroStrategy 9.3Graph Matrix (Deprecated)WidgetVisualization Goal:The Graph Matrix widget allows you to quickly analyze various trends across several metricdimensions. You can use the widget to assessquestions such as “How are sales comparing vs.forecast, by time and region?”. The Graph Matrixwidget consists of several area graphs that displayactual values. Each area graph also has a linegraph above it to show forecasted values. Onegraph is displayed for every combination of elements from the attributes on the widget template’srows and columns. You can click any graph tozoom in for a more detailed view.Report Objects required for Grid/Graph:Place either two attributes on the Grid/Graph’srows and one attribute on the columns: along withone metric on the columns; or you must placethree attributes on the rows and one metric on thecolumns:– Place at least two attributes on the rows. Thefirst (left-most) attribute on the rows (and thesecond, third, fourth, and so on) provide therow headers in the widget. The last (right-most)attribute on the rows provides the X-axis of thegraphs. This attribute, which is generally timebased, is used to drive the time series of thegraphs.– If there are fewer than three attributes on therows, place at least one attribute on the columns:The first (left-most) attribute on the columnsprovides the column headers in the widget. Thesevalues are used to slice the data by groupingit, based on the column attributes. Additionalattributes on the columns produce separate linegraphs within each area graph in the widget.– Place at least one metric on the Grid/Graph’scolumns: (If there is an attribute on the columns, place the metric to the right of, or below, theattribute.) The value of this metric is graphedon the Y-axis. The first metric on the columns isdepicted as the colored series in the area graphs.Any additional metrics are depicted as the forecastlines in each area graph.Note: This widget requires MicroStrategy 9.3Interactive Stacked GraphVisualization Goal:This graph allows the users to view the contribution of an individual series or a specific group ofseries to the total. They can interactively select theseries that comprises of the total data selected.Report Objects required for Grid/Graph:Two attributes, one on the rows and one on thecolumns: The attribute placed in the columns willappear in the list of check boxes on the left side4www.infocepts.com

of the widget. The attributes placed in the rowswill appear on the X-axis at the bottom of the areagraph in the widget. One metric on the columns: The metric values aredisplayed on the Y-axis of the graph.(No maximum number of attributes and metrics)(No maximum number of attributes and metrics)Note: This widget requires MicroStrategy 9.3Interactive Bubble GraphVisualization Goal:This is a variant of bubble graph with time seriesanimation, drilling and automatic color coding.Note: This widget requires MicroStrategy 9.3Time Series SliderVisualization Goal:A Time Series Slider widget is an’ Area Graph’that allows the analyst to choose a particularsection of the graph to view at a time. The widgetconsists of two related graphs that are positionedone above the other. The top graph is the controller, and contains a slider. The bottom graph isthe primary graph. You can use the slider on thecontroller to select some portion of the controller, which determines the range of data visible in theprimary graph.Report Objects required for Grid/Graph:Place at least one attribute in the rows: To enabledrilling on the bubble chart, add one additionalattribute to the left of the attribute in the rows. Toenable time series animation, add yet anotherattribute (a third attribute) on the left-most side ofthe rows.Report Objects required for Grid/Graph:This graph has one attribute on the rows, (preferably time based ones). The attribute elements aredisplayed along the X-axis.One metric on the columns: The metric values getdisplayed along the Y-axis. If you include two metrics, a line graph and an area graph are displayedtogether.(No maximum number of attributes and metrics)graph are displayed together.(No maximum number of attributes and metrics)Place 3 metrics on the columns: These metrics aredisplayed along the X-axis, Y-axis and Z-axis, inorder from left to right. To display a different colorbubble (series) for each attribute element on thebubble chart, add an additional (that is, a fourth)attribute above the other three metricsNote: This widget requires MicroStrategy 9.3Note: This widget requires MicroStrategy 9.3www.infocepts.com5

Single Value VisualizationHeat MapVisualization Goal:Visualization Goal:The goal of this visualization is to represent a single value in a visual manner such as a Gauge of acylinder or a Thermometer. A Gauge can displaymultiple metrics. A Selector enables the user tointeract with the Dashboard. Single Value Visualizations consist of Gauge, Cylinder and Thermometer. The goal of the Heat Map is to allow a user tograsp the state and impact of a large number ofvariables at once quickly. This graph displays therows of data as groups of rectangles that can bearranged, sized and colored to graphically revealthe underlying data patterns. This visualizationtechnique allows users to easily recognize complicated data relationships that are otherwisenon-obvious from a tabular display of dataReport Objects required for Grid/Graph:The main report objects required in Heat Map isat least one of more attributes on the rows. If youadd additional attributes, all of them will be displayed as separate rectangles in the heat map.Two or more metrics on the columns: First metricdetermines the relative size of the rectangle 2ndmetric determines color Metrics can be changedon the fly.Note: This widget requires MicroStrategy 9.3Report Objects required for Grid/Graph:The report Objects required for Single value Visualization are as follows:One attribute on the rows: The attribute elementsare displayed in the selector that is used to displaydifferent data in the widget. One metric on the columns: The metric valuesdetermine the location of the needle on the gauge, the level in the cylinder or the reading the thermometer.(No maximum number of attributes and metrics)Note: This widget requires MicroStrategy 9.36www.infocepts.com

Funnel WidgetData Clouds WidgetVisualization Goal:A Data Cloud widget displays attribute elementsin various sizes to depict the differences in metric values between the elements. The widget issimilar to a heat map. In a way that it allows theanalyst to quickly identify the most significant, positive, or negative contributions. The widget consists of a list of attribute elements. The font size of each attribute element representsa metric value for that element. These metric values represent the values of the first metric on thewidget’s template.Report Objects required for Grid/Graph:At least one attribute on the rows: The elementsof the attribute are displayed in the widget. If youinclude additional attributes to the right of the firstattribute, elements from all of the attributes arecombined and displayed in the widget. At least one metric on the columns: The firstmetric on the columns determines the size of thefont of the attribute elements in the widget. If youinclude additional metrics to the right of the firstmetric, the metrics are displayed in the too tipsavailable in Flash Mode. When a user hovers thecursor over an attribute element, a tool tip is displayed. The tool tip lists the metric values for thatattribute element or group of attribute elements.Visualization Goal:A Funnel widget allows you to quickly analyzevarious trends across several metric values. TheFunnel widget can be used for a wide varietyof business purposes, including applicationmanagement, click management, pipelineanalyses for sales forecasts, and sales processanalysis. The widget is a variation of a stackedpercent bar chart that displays data that adds up to100%. Therefore, it can allow analysts to visualizethe percentage of contribution from sales data orthe stages in a sales process and reveal the amountof potential revenue for each stage. When thewidget is used to analyze a sales process, analystscan use the widget to drill down to key metricssuch as deal size, profit potential, and probabilityof closing. The widget can also be used to identifypotential problem areas in an organization’s salesprocesses.Report Objects required for Grid/Graph:At least one attribute on the rows: The attributesare displayed as separate sections in the widget. At least one metric on the columns: The size ofeach section of the widget is determined by thevalues of the metric.www.infocepts.com7

Fish Eye Selector WidgetVisualization Goal:The Fish Eye Selector magnifies an item when auser brings the cursor over it in Flash Mode, Interactive Mode, or Express Mode in MicroStrategyWeb. Any item that a user hovers over or selectsremains magnified, while rest of the items remainminimized and are displayed in the background ofthe selector. A Fish Eye Selector shown is in FlashMode, targeting a graph, which changes as theselection on the left changes.Report Objects required for Grid/Graph:An Attribute or a Metric: Select an attribute or ametric from the Dataset Objects panel on the left, and drag it on top of the Grid/Graph’s rows. Theattribute elements or metric values will be displayed in the selector.Water Fall WidgetVisualization Goal:A Waterfall widget highlights the incrementsand decrements of the values of metrics overtime. Analysts can use the widget to identify theaspects of the business that are contributing tothe fluctuations in the values. Analyst can alsouse this widget to perform “What-if” analyses. The widget consists of a group of clustered barsdisplayed from left to right. The X-axis containseither attribute elements or metrics, dependingon where the attributes and metrics are placed onthe widget’s template in Design Mode or EditableMode. The Y-axis displays a range of valuesbased on the metrics on the widget’s template.8www.infocepts.comReport Objects required for Grid/Graph:The rows can have any of the following:No attributes or metrics: If there are no attributesor metrics on the rows, you must place one ormore attributes and metrics on the columns orplace one or more metrics on the columns. One or more attributes and/or metrics: The widgetdisplays the elements of attributes placed on therows on the X-axis. Similarly, the metrics placedon the rows are displayed on the X-axis of thewidget. The widget also displays the bars whichare based on the values of these metrics aredisplayed in the widget. If you want the metrics onthe widget template to generate the increment anddecrement bars in the widget, it is recommendedthat you place the metrics on the rows. When weplace attribute and Metric both on the rows, acombination of those objects is displayed on theX-axis.The rows can have any of the following:No attributes and one or more metric:/ One ormore attributes and/or metrics: Metrics placedon the columns are displayed in the legend. Barsbased on the values of the metrics are displayedin the widget. The elements of attributes placedon the columns are displayed in the legend. When both attributes and metrics are placed onthe columns, a combination of those objects isdisplayed on the X-axis.

Graph MatrixVisualization Goal:The Graph Matrix widget allows you to quicklyanalyze the various trends across several metricdimensions. The widget consists of a matrix ofgraphs that allow users to analyze and comparetrends in metric data.Report Objects required for Grid/Graph:At least one attribute, either on the row or thecolumns. At least one metric on the columns, below allattributes that are on the columns.Note: This widget requires MicroStrategy 9.3An interactive style of selector that is displayedonly in Flash Mode. It is a calendar selector thatallows you to select which dates you want to seedata about in a dashboard. You are able to seeall of the dates of each month in the widget, whichallows you to be able to select dates more easily.Report Objects required for Grid/Graph:Report Objects required for Grid/Graph:From the Dataset Objects panel on the left, selectone attribute and drag it on top of the Grid/Graph’srows. The attribute must be of a date typeNote: This widget requires MicroStrategy 9.3Image LayoutVisualization Goal:You can add an Image Layout widget to a document to display an image overlaid with coloredareas or bubble markers. For example, you candisplay a map of the United States, with a bubblemarker displayed over each state. You can havestates with a high number of stores displayedusing large bubble markers, and states with a lownumber of stores displayed using small bubblemarkers. You can display the Image Layout widget on amobile device with MicroStrategy MobileDate SelectionVisualization Goal:Report Objects required for Grid/Graph:At least one location specific Attribute; To specify the areas or bubble markers to displayin the widget, place one attribute on the rowsof the widget’s Grid/Graph. This attribute mustcontain the name of each location that you wantto display in the widget, as described in theprerequisites. Place at least two metrics on thecolumns of the widget’s Grid/Graph.Prerequisites :This procedure assumes that an administrator hasalready created the following:The shape of the file you want to use to display thewww.infocepts.com9

widget: A shape file is an HTML file that containsthe image that you want to display in the widget,as well as the location of each bubble marker orarea you want to display on top of the image. Webprovides several default shape files for you tochoose from, including a map of countries of theworld and a map of states in the United States. An attribute with the name of each location thatyou want to display in the widget: Each elementin this attribute should contain the name of alocation defined in the shape file described above,as listed in the ALT parameter for the location. For example, if the shape file defines a bubblemarker for Washington state as follows: AREASHAPE ”triangle” HREF ”#” ALT ”Washington”COORDS ”69, 30” / , the attribute should containan element named Washington.Note: This widget requires MicroStrategy 9.3Area MashupVisualization Goal:Shortly after its debut in 9.0.1 Jump Start, thewidget was renamed from Map Widget to AreaMashup. The reason is that it is not a map inthe geographical sense, but a map in the imagesense. It is a widget that will load an image anddraw polygon regions on your image that will reactin both color and tooltip to your underlying reportdata. The most common implementation is as ageographical map, but you could use it foranything.Network Widget10www.infocepts.com

Visualization Goal:To create a Network Visualization widget that allow analysts to quickly and easily identify relationshipsbetween related items and clusters, such as when visualizing a social network or displaying a marketbasket analysis.Report Objects required forGrid/Graph:Attribute elements are displayed as nodes in the visualization, with lines (called edges) drawn betweenthe nodes to represent relationships between elements. Once the visualization is created, users can viewcharacteristics of the nodes and the relationships between them, using display options such as:Node size, edge thickness, and edge color.About InfoCeptsSince 2004, InfoCepts has delivered on the promiseof Business Intelligence.
