Keynote Speaker for 2017 NYSEA Annual ConferenceDr. Michael GrossmanBIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHDr. Michael Grossman is Distinguished Professor of Economics in the Ph.D. Program inEconomics at The City University of New York Graduate Center; New York Office Director,Health Economics Program Director, and Research Associate at the National Bureau ofEconomic Research; and Research Fellow at IZA. He is the author of seven books, seventythree journal articles, and thirty-five book chapters. His research has focused on economicmodels of the determinants of adult, child, and infant health in the U.S.; economic approaches tocigarette smoking and alcohol use by teenagers and young adults; empirical applications ofrational addiction theories; the demand for pediatric care; the production and cost of ambulatorymedical care in community health centers; and the determinants of interest rates on tax-exempthospital bonds. His recently completed studies deal with the effects of excise taxes on cigarettesmoking by pregnant women; the relationship between substance use and risky sexual behaviorby teenagers; the economics of obesity; the effects of managed care on hospital prices for bypasssurgery and angioplasty; the effects of parents’ schooling and the introduction of national healthinsurance on child health in Taiwan; the effects of food prices on childhood obesity; racial andethnic differences in physical activity; and neuroeconomics and alcohol control policies. He is listed in the 2003 edition of Who’s Who inEconomics. He is the past recipient of grants from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse andAlcoholism, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Agency for Health Care Research andQuality, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the NationalInstitute of Nursing Research, the Ford Foundation, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, theNational Science Foundation, and the National Institute of Child Health and HumanDevelopment. His current research is funded by grants from the National Cancer Institute, theNational Institute on Aging, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and theNational Institute on Drug Abuse. He has served as the sponsor and chair of 112 completedPh.D. dissertations and has served as a committee member of an additional 178 completed Ph.D.dissertations.
