Anne Arundel Community College101 College Parkway Arnold, Maryland 21012-1895 410-777-AACC (2222)Dear Prospective Physical Therapist Assistant Student,Congratulations on selecting Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) as your career goal!Anne Arundel Community College is one of three Maryland community colleges that haveformed a special consortium to offer a joint physical therapist assistant program. TheChesapeake Area Consortium for Higher Education (CACHE) includes Anne ArundelCommunity College, College of Southern Maryland (CSM) and Chesapeake College(CC). A new class of students is admitted in the fall of each year.Each of the three colleges offers a program leading to an Associate of Applied Sciencedegree. Maryland students selected for the PTA program will pay in-county tuition rates.Applicants should apply to only one consortium college and residents of the countiesserved by the colleges are given preference for selection. Lecture and college laboratoryclasses are held at the Anne Arundel Community College campus with some lecturesdelivered through distance learning. Clinical practice rotations are completed at localservice areas where possible. Graduates of this program will be eligible to take theNational Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE ) for Physical Therapist Assistants toobtain state licensure. PTAs work under the supervision of a physical therapist at hospitals, outpatientclinics, extended care facilities, home health agencies, schools, sports facilities,and private practicesPTAs work with people of all ages with health conditions limiting movement andfunctional activitiesTypical care provided by PTAs includes strengthening, conditioning, gait trainingincluding use of crutches and walkers, manual therapy and massage, and use ofphysical agents such as electrotherapy.Median annual earnings are approximately 52,000 as reported by the AmericanPhysical Therapy Association.The first step in the admission process is attendance at an Information Session led byprogram faculty. All sessions review the academic and admission requirements, thesequence of courses and projected time commitment. Students eligible to submit applications for selection are those who have completedall of the academic requirements by the end of the spring term. The applications will be reviewed and students will receive a letter regarding thestatus of their applications. All applicants must attend a mandatory meeting the 4th Wednesday in April at 3:00pm. Applicants who do not attend this meeting will not be considered forselection. Initial selection to the fall class (PTA 101) will be made according to the criteria listedin the section “Selection Criteria” following evaluation of spring term grades. 11

Eligible applicants will receive an acceptance packet after the spring selectionassigning them to one of the following categories: Conditional Acceptance or WaitList Status. Conditional Acceptance: Applicants who have met the academic andadmission requirements and have been selected for PTA 101, the firstcourse in the Physical Therapist Assistant sequence. Final acceptanceinto the program shall be contingent upon satisfactory completion of acriminal background check, health examination record, and submission ofcurrent American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) CPRcertification. With the acceptance packet, conditionally accepted studentswill receive the health examination record, criminal background check andCPR instructions to be completed by a designated deadline. ConditionalAcceptance candidates who do not meet this deadline will not beconsidered for admission and the next person on the wait list will becontacted. Wait List: In the event that there are more qualified applicants than seatsavailable, qualified applicants not initially chosen for conditionalacceptance will be placed on a wait list in rank order and notified ofselection if and when a seat becomes available.Technical Standards1. Students conditionally accepted to the Physical Therapist Assistant Program will berequired to complete the health examination record. Once a physician certifies thatthe candidate meets the technical standard requirement (defined in #2 below) asestablished by the department within the scope of practice of the profession, and thedepartment receives and concurs with the physician’s certification, the candidate willbe considered as having met the technical standard requirement.2. Qualification: Good physical and mental health.Admission Criteria (Technical Standards): Student must be free of contagion andpossess sufficient stamina with or without reasonable accommodations, as maybe required by law, and mental stability to fulfill the requirements of the programand the customary requirements of the profession: Work for 8-12 hours performing physical tasks requiring sufficient strengthand motor coordination without jeopardy to patient and student safety as,for example, bending, lifting, turning and ambulating patients. Perform fine movements and be able to manipulate instruments and widevariety of equipment according to established procedure and standards ofspeed and accuracy. Establish and work toward goals in a consistently responsible, realisticmanner. Have auditory ability sufficient to monitor and assess health needs (forexample: communicate verbally, in an effective manner, with patients andother personnel).12

Have visual ability sufficient for observation and assessment necessary forpatient care (for example: read and process patient-related informationlike patient charts and requisitions).Criminal Background Checks and Drug ScreeningAll Health Sciences students who are offered admission and/or clinical placement willbe required to submit to a complete criminal background check and urine drug screen.All student applicants’ final acceptance in the program shall be contingent uponsatisfactory completion of a criminal background check and of a urine drug screen.*All letters of acceptance shall state that the acceptance is conditional and contingent onsubmission to a criminal background check and urine drug screen—as may be requiredby the program—that results in satisfactory reports. If an accepted student tests positivefor an illegal or un-prescribed drug, the student shall be denied admission or terminatedfrom any Health Sciences program.Separate, additional criminal background checks and urine drug screens may berequired by clinical sites prior to placements. Students with an unsuccessful backgroundcheck or urine screening who are denied by a clinical site that is required to meetprogram competencies shall be dismissed from the program and their registrations shallbe withdrawn from courses related to the program of study. If the student tests positivefor an illegal or un-prescribed drug, the student shall be denied admission or terminatedfrom any Health Sciences program even if a denied placement was not required to meetprogram competencies. Successful reports of criminal background checks and urinedrug screens do not assure eligibility for specific clinical site placement, programcompletion, and/or eligibility to sit for professional licensure/board examinations.Students are reminded that licensing boards for certain health care occupations andprofessions may deny, suspend, or revoke a license or may deny the individual theopportunity to sit for an examination even if the individual has completed all programcourse work if it is determined that an applicant has a criminal history or has beenconvicted of, or pleads guilty, or pleads nolo contendere or the like to a felony or otherserious crime.Successful completion of a Health Sciences program of study at Anne ArundelCommunity College does not guarantee licensure, the opportunity to sit for a licensureexamination, certification or employment in the relevant health care occupation.Students may be automatically denied admission or, if enrolled, dismissed from theprogram if they have not been truthful or have provided inaccurate information on theapplication or on any other form or submission. Students who have questions orconcerns are encouraged to contact the Health Sciences Admissions Office ng the statements herein regarding urine drug screens, as of September2010, only certain programs will be requiring drug screening. AACC shall inform13

students which programs presently require them. However, AACC, at any time, has theright, upon notice, to require any and all students in any and all programs to comply withdrug screening. *At this time, the CACHE PTA Program does not require drug screeningfor admission.NOTE: Licensing boards for certain health care occupations, including PTA, may deny,suspend, or revoke a license or may deny the individual the opportunity to sit for anexamination even if the individual has completed all program course work, if it isdetermined that an applicant has a criminal history or is convicted or pleads guilty ornolo contendere to a felony or other serious crime. If applicable, it is recommended tocontact the Maryland Board of Physical Therapy for clarification at 410-764-4752.PLEASE NOTE: AACC will only accept criminal background checks performed bya college approved vendor. Criminal background checks are completed onlineand must be paid for by the student. Information and instructions are given toapplicants once accepted into the program.CPRConditionally accepted students must successfully complete the American HeartAssociation Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR course. CPR certification must be validthrough graduation.Additional Information:The School of Health Sciences’ Health Examination Requirements are aligned with ourclinical site requirements. The clinical sites allow our students to fulfill their programrequired clinical rotations pursuant to an Affiliation Agreement with the College.Therefore, the College and its students are required to abide by and follow the clinicalsite requirements. Most of our clinical sites require proof of the influenza vaccine andwill not permit students on site without evidence of the vaccine. If you do not show proofof an annual influenza vaccine, you may not attend clinical and will therefore be at riskof not completing your program requirements. Waivers are considered by some clinicalsites. If a student is unwilling to have an influenza vaccination, they have the right andsole obligation to file for said waiver with the clinical site. If they obtain the waiver, theymay fulfill their clinical rotation at the clinical site in lieu of being immunized forinfluenza.Pertaining to prescribed medicationsUpon admission to the Physical Therapist Assistant Program, students must disclose allmedications on their health form and if during their matriculation they have a change inhealth (physical, mental, or emotional) and/or medication status, they are required tosubmit a Health Status Update form to the Manager of Admissions and Advising.14

Medical Marijuana/Cannabis PolicyAny student testing positive for cannabis may not be accepted into a clinical rotation byMaryland hospitals or health care facilities (including veterinary facilities), regardless ofa legally obtained identification card. Inability to complete the clinical/practicumcomponents of the programs results in students being unable to complete courserequirements and thus successfully complete the program.SELECTION CRITERIAThe criteria used to select Conditional Acceptance and Wait List candidates will beapplied in the following order:1. Applicants who meet the March 30th application deadline.2. First consideration for selection will be given to candidates whose resident addressis in Anne Arundel County for at least three months prior to the application deadline.The Address Verification Form is part of the application packet and must becompleted in its entirety with two supporting documents. Applications receivedwithout this form and documentation will be considered incomplete and willbe returned to the applicant.
