Technical summary1TECHNICAL SUMMARYFrom the earliest stages of planning the North West Shelf Joint EnvironmentalManagement Study it was evident that good management of the scientific data to beused in the research would be important for the success of the Study.A comprehensive review of data sets and other information relevant to the marineecosystems, the geology, infrastructure and industries of the North West Shelf area hadbeen completed (Heyward et al. 2006). The Data Management Project was establishedto source and prepare existing data sets for use, requiring the development and use of arange of tools: metadata systems, data visualisation and data delivery applications. These were made available to collaborators to allow easy access to data obtained andgenerated by the Study. The CMAR MarLIN metadata system was used to document the 285 data sets, thosewhich were identified as potentially useful for the Study and the software andinformation products generated by and for the Study. This report represents a hard copy atlas of all NWSJEMS data products and the existingdata sets identified for potential use as inputs to the Study. It comprises summarymetadata elements describing the data sets, their custodianship and how the data setsmight be obtained. The identifiers of each data set can be used to refer to the fullmetadata records in the on-line MarLIN system.

21.INTRODUCTIONAs would be expected in an ecosystem-wide study of the North West Shelf marineenvironment, NWSJEMS drew upon information about the region from a very widerange of sources. Both the information gathered for use in the Study, and the outputsfrom the Study, are described in the following pages, which comprise a catalogue ofNWSJEMS data sets. This report presents, in the form of an atlas, a concise description of the 285 data sets asthey were at the end of the Project in June 2006. It outlines how further information canbe sourced from the Study knowledge base.At the outset of the NWSJEMS the need was recognised to work with data providers toconsolidate existing information; to seek expert insights and manage the resourcesavailable for the Study. The NWSJEMS Data Management Project was established in apartnership between CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research (CMAR) and the thenWA Department of Environment and Protection (DEP). National standards forgathering and publishing information about data sets were applied. Licence agreementsfor data use were negotiated as the data sets were obtained. Material was distributed toresearchers according to their requirements. Suitable technologies were set in place tomanage the process. The use of the CMAR metadata tool, MarLIN, was important in recording, in astructured and searchable way, the documentation which is required to make a scientificdata set easy to find, access, use and re-use. The information resides in a relationaldatabase with which the user interacts using MarLIN on a web browser. The data-storeof metadata can be used in other ways too, and this report is an example of that. It wasgenerated with a subset of the information in MarLIN.The survey data and GIS data sets described here are stored in the Data Warehouse, aspatially enabled Oracle repository. User and technical information on the MarLINinterface and the Data Warehouse and other interactive data tools built for NWSJEMSis in the prior report in this series, Information Access and Inquiry NWSJEMS TechnicalReport 4 (2006).The next chapter describes the process of gathering the data sets required for the Study. The data management strategies that were used are also outlined, but the main focus ofthe report is the comprehensive listing of data set descriptions in the chapters thatfollow. Firstly, in Chapter 3, we describe NWSJEMS outputs and associated tools usedin and produced during the Project. From Chapter 4, the data sets which were availablefor, but not all actually used in NWSJEMS are outlined, each chapter roughly reflectsthe categories explored in the research. The indexes at the end of the report provides acomprehensive list of data sets. However the best option for finding information onmaterial of interest would be to use the on-line search features of MarLIN.
