Palomar Amateur RadioClubVolume XXXI No. 12December 2004President’s MessageDecember Meeting:Merry Christmas to all, andfrom the PARC Board andme a wish that you have awonderful, safe, and healthyNew year 2005.The PARCChristmas SocialThe December program bringsus a return of the longstandingPARC Holiday Tradition, thePARC Christmas Social.Come and join PARC membersin a meeting dedicated to celebrating the season, reminiscingthe fun events of the past year, and wishing good cheer and fortune in the New Year.Bring a goody for sharing, andhave "an eyeball QSO" with theClub members. This will also be the eventwherein the new slate of Clubofficers are installed.73 de NN3VIs your Christmas wish listcomplete? It is a great timeto drool over the goodies thatappear in the many radiocatalogs and magazines.Maybe 2005 is the year youreturn to HF? Remember thefun you had when youstarted HF operations? Thepleasure of not knowingwhat may result from a “CQ”call on the bands, the accomplishment of working thatrare call through the pile-up!You say you do not remember the sounds of the HFband?I have a Christmas present for you. A fully functional Kenwood R-5000 receiver with all the antennainstallation you need to enjoy the bands, and not evenbe seen by your NIMBYneighbors!Tiger Tek Inc., an information technology company inSalt Lake City, UT, operatesa remote receiver site – fullyinterfaced through the internet - dedicated to radio experimentation and a seriesof services too numerous tooutline here. Basically, youpoint your browser to http://www.smeter.net/ and thereyou will find an absolutelyamazing array of HF information, experimentationprocedures, and yes – a remote S meter. What is a remote S meteryou ask? Well, through yourbrowser you take full controlof a Kenwood R-5000 receiver located in Bountiful,UT. Ever wonder what yoursignal sounds like at theremote end of your contact?Imagine tuning the remotereceiver in Bountiful, UT tothe frequency on which youwish to operate, then transmitting from your shack. What you will hear comingback to you over the internetis the remote site’s receivedsignal from your station.Neat, huh!I make routine use of the capability every time I set up forthe various IOOK 40M nets inwhich I participate sincepropagation from Poway toInside this issue:Contest Coral2PARC Repeaters3Committee Chairs / Net3Ares Public Service3Board Meeting Minutes4Calendar of Events / Nets5For Sale6Puzzle Solution9Hiker’s Net News8(Continued on page 2)Thoughts of a Past PresidentAs I look back over these lastthree years, PARC faced someserious challenges. After Placing 19th nationally and first inCategory 5F at this yearsField Day, and establishing aNew Members Chairpersonwhich are just sum of theachievements of our Club during the last three years. UnderPresident Charlie's leadershipthe performance of several duties of one man were absorbedinto his administration anddelegated to a teem ofvolunteers. This has made ourClub stronger, and it is a trib-ute to Charlie and those thatserved on the Board of Directors for the Past three years.Since we do not have termlimits, the Nominating Committee, as evidenced bytheir recommendations, provided for the renewal of theboard leadership thisyear. This will provide offeran opportunity for anothermember to gainexperience at the Helm. Veryfew Past Presidents haveserved more than three yearsand the longest a Presidentserved, that I can recall, is7 years. Inmy opinion terms greaterthan three years, can andhave caused polarization, dissention, and hard feelings, none of which are inthe best interests of eitherAmateur Radio, or PARC.As a Past President ofPARC I have felt the excitement as the captain ofat the helm, as well as thesadness in turning over thegavel to someone else. Ialso know that for the bet(Continued on page 7)

VOLUME XXXI NO. 12P A L O M A R A M A T E U R R A D I O CLUB(President’s Message Continued from page 1)Salt Lake City on 40M gives me agood idea of how the net is going tobe. I transmit, I listen to the remotereceiver, and that gives me a fairlygood idea of how the net is going tosound for me.Of course, you can also listen to anyfrequency and signal the R-5000 iscapable of receiving. Likewise, thewebsite contains an amazing arrayof information about all aspects ofradio technology, propagation prediction, antenna design information, etc., etc.So point your browser to the TigerTek site, and enjoy my HF receiverChristmas gift for you.Merry Christmas and HappyNew Year 2005!73 de NN3V P.A.R.C.
