The interactive and informative courses offered by the Council help you to become a better leader, and in turn, offer a better program to our Scouts. Thank you for your time and commitment! No matter what your position in Scouting, or if you are an interested parent wanting to know more about BSA programs, this is where you will want to be on October 28, 2017. The University of Scouting courses are designed to help YOU improve your skills and increase your knowledge about Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity, Venturing, Commissioner Service and related subjects. We encourage you to use your time between classes for Scouter networking – meet up with old friends, make new friends, and enjoy a great lunch. Don’t forget to visit the University of Scouting Expo and Trading Post throughout the day. Once this class is taken, along with Youth Protection, and introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills, a Boy Scout Leader is considered "Trained". (4 Hours) BOY-102 Everything you need to know for guiding a Scout from the Life rank to Eagle. What is an Eagle Coach and do you need one? Learn the online requirements and tracking requirements for the troop. Putting your new Scout on a plan for success is critical to retain them. From their first campout to their first summer camp and merit badges, all define their success. BOY-103 Life to Eagle and the Role of the Eagle Coach Understanding the Merit Badge Program Learn how the merit badge process is designed to function including advancement at camps and merit badge fairs. Many Leaders fear they will lose their Troop leadership if their youth become involved in the Order of the Arrow. BOY-111 Outdoor Ceremonies and Ceremonies with Pizzazz Bring more life to your campfires with songs, skits, and stories to create those magical moments of scouting. (2 Hours) The Patrol Method: Building a Culture of Effective Boy Leadership Is your Troop really Boy run? Does the Patrol Method really work? Are you using the Patrol Method but it seems to be falling short? How to help your Patrols work together as teams: share the responsibilities and strive to make THEIR Patrol the best it can be. The focus is on training, resources, and team building for effective boy-led Troops. Topics include: building a shared culture, developing boy leaders, practicing the adult roles of advisor and mentor, and implementing effective and exciting Youth Leader Training in your Unit. An adult leader from every Troop should attend! BOY-115 BOY-120 Games Used to Teach Scouting Skills If Scouting is a game with a purpose, why aren't we having fun at our Troop meetings or training sessions? This class will explore ways to make Scouting more fun and interesting for the Scouts (and adults) while teaching Scouting skills. Formerly: Team Building Games Day Outings for First Year Scouts BOY-123 Wilderness Survival Covers a subset of Wilderness Survival that overlaps the Boy Scout Merit Badge and the Venturing Outdoor Bronze / Ranger requirements: Risk management, 7 survival priorities, Emergency survival kit, and learn what to bring and do to help survive an unexpected overnight emergency. BOY-125 Introduction to Backpacking This is an informational session on the ins and outs of backpacking. All ages and experience levels are welcome. Scoutmaster Share This class will have a moderator and give class members the opportunity to share ideas that have worked for them as a Scoutmaster. Please come with your ideas and experiences. 2017 University of Scouting Course Catalog BOY-126 How to Build a Skills Challenge Program COA-001 Youth are exposed to a lot of really useful skills in the Scouting program. One thing that is not emphasized, however, is skill mastery. This class will introduce the concept of a skills advancement program that encourages skill mastery by leveraging Scout-to-Scout interaction, the natural competition inherent in youth, and a Scout's familiarity with an advancement format. By including Scout Leaders and families, this program can increase interaction and comradery within the unit. Example programs for Knot Skills and First Aid will be introduced during this class. BOY-127 BOY-128 COA-002 Patrol and Troop Service Projects Learn how to identify and plan for service projects ranging in size from Patrol day activities to full Troop multi-day events. DON’T LIMIT YOURSELF! Lighten Your Load: Lightweight Backpacking and Gear Come learn industry tips and best practices for packing light for day trips, 50 milers, or general Northwest adventures that won't break your bank or back. Learn how to choose lighter gear and to decide what you really need to take with you on the trail. Come see and feel the gear to help you decide how to pack light with your budget. (2 Hours) COA-003 Winter Camping in the Northwest Do you want to get out in the cold and enjoy the Northwest winter with your scouts. Learn how to dress for cold weather, use proper winter equipment, see and feel winter gear, and learn some of the best places to go in the Northwest. Advanced Dutch Oven Cooking This class will go into more advanced techniques of Dutch Oven cooking. (2 Hours) New to Dutch Oven cooking? See 122 BOY Dutch Oven—Getting Started BOY-129 Prepare to be amazed at the myriad of high adventure possibilities in Washington State including backpacking, sea kayaking, white water rafting, and mountaineering. Learn key principles for high adventure planning and preparation from an outdoor master. Stealth Camping A thoughtful frame of mind and understanding of outdoor ethics is essential to maintaining wilderness conservation. Learn the basic principles of Leave No Trace to maintain the outdoor experience for all Scouts to come. (Formerly Leave No Trace Camping) High Adventure Places to Go and How to Prepare COA-004 Northwest Backpacking Planning a backpacking trip for your Scouts and not sure where to start? This class is for leaders with high adventure experience but need guidance in planning a backpacking trip short or long. Learn places to go in the Northwest, how to prepare your Scouts for backpacking, and the resources available for your scouts. Look outside your program designation for fun and interesting classes. You will learn successful strategies, gear tips, and places to go. Many of the principles will also be useful for any 50-mile high adventure. COA-006 COA-007 COM-301 Den Chief Training COM-305 DID YOU KNOW? Getting to Gold: Unit Journey to Excellence Scouting's Journey to Excellence is the BSA's council performance recognition program designed to encourage and reward success and measure the performance of our units. Do you understand what it takes to attain gold and why you should strive for it? This class is intended for unit leaders, committee members and Commissioners. BCS-107 COM-306 GEN-405 Emphasizing Duty to God in Scouting The purpose of this course is to explain how and why Scouting encourages boys to be reverent. Learn how Scouting teaches boys to do their duty to God through program delivery, special observances, faith-based partnerships and BSA religious support and Baden Powel’s Thoughts on Scouting. BCS-129 A Den Chief can make a big difference in the Cub Scout program. They can be a leader and mentor for our Cub Scouts and assist in the Webelos-toScout transition. This class is being offered to eligible Boy Scouts and will prepare the Scout to be an effective Den Chief. Become a Den Chief in order to help strengthen your Troop by pulling in Webelos from the dens that you assist. (3 Hours). Commissioner Basic Training Required Basic Training for all new Commissioners. Learn why we have Commissioners, the basics to be effective, top priorities, and helping the unit succeed in delivering a quality Scouting program. (4 Hours) COM-303 Self Propelled Water High Adventures Have you always wanted to go Sea Kayaking, White Water Rafting, or Canoeing but don't know where to get started? Come learn from an expert how to prepare for an adventure on the water, where to get resources, and the best places to go in the Northwest. GEN-401 A Commissioner’s primary purpose is to help units succeed, develop a better program, and operate effectively. Frequently Commissioners are called upon to assist units with concerns that could hinder the unit’s success. Participants of this course will become familiar with how to respond to these concerns using Commissioner Tools and Early Warning Signals. BCS-105 Gourmet Dining in the Bush There are unlimited trails that can take us into the backcountry, but only so many packaged meals for your high adventures. This class will expand your vision of eating in the wild and will show how to create weight-conscious, non-perishable meals that are sure to satisfy the hungriest, weariest adventurers before resting up for another day of beauty. Learn simple techniques that will have you and your scouters eating like kings in your outdoor adventures. Practical Solutions for Common Unit Needs Re-charter and Scoutbook This year all units need to use the Scoutbook app to submit their re-charter paperwork. Learn how to obtain Scoutbook and use the re-charter function to complete your unit's paperwork accurately and on time. This class includes an overview of other Scoutbook functions and how this suite of easy-to-use Web-based tools enables units to better communicate, update records, and manage activities. 2017 University of Scouting Course Catalog COM-310 Commissioner Lifesaving COM-320 No, you don’t carry a rope and life buoy. But, when your unit starts foundering, you become a “lifesaving commissioner” and you may even help put together a “lifesaving team.” This class sets the stage for saving a unit and reviews the basic unit lifesaving steps. Getting to know your units will help you identify when and how to address issues they face in keeping the units strong and successful. MCS-303/304 COM-312 Top 10 Ways to Ensure Good Commissioner Service Our young Scouts have never known life without computers or the Internet, so it is critical that they know how to safely navigate the Web. The Cyber Chip program builds on BSA's commitment to youth protection. It is required for advancement for both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Learn how your unit can get the most out of this program to keep kids safe. COM-321 Serving Scouts with Disabilities Virtually every unit will experience having a youth who has disabilities. This course will provide Commissioners with knowledge to share with unit leaders so they can provide a program that provides these youth with the Scouting opportunities to succeed. This course is for Commissioners, unit leader, and committee members. BCS-118 . COM-317 COM-322 Social Media COM-318 Good Commissioners Need Both Head and Heart The objective of this session is to help commissioners with at least one or two years of experience reflect on some of the important qualities of good commissioner service (the “head”). The session also provides a variety of inspirational anecdotes for them to share with unit adults as well as other commissioners (the “heart”). MCS309 Helping Units Communicate with The parents of new and potential Scouts, especially Cub Scouts, are increasingly millennials who are technologically savvy and avid consumers of social media. Units need to leverage these resources both for recruiting and for communicating with and retaining Scouting families. Learn how to improve a unit's Social Media presence and how to effectively communicate. Contacting Units Commissioners’ primary role as a friend to the unit is to help the unit succeed. At the core of unit service and the most basic task is the unit visit. This is where the unit can experience the caring and support that the commissioner offers. Learn how the concept of commissioner service is demonstrated in frequent unit contacts, ways to demonstrate good commissioner service as we serve as friend, teacher, doctor, counselor, coach, mentor, and representative of the BSA, and the importance of using the Commissioner Tools to record and manage unit contacts. BCS104 Today everyone has their top 10 list, including commissioners. This class is designed to help experienced commissioners review their priorities and – for some of us – to get back to the basics. It summarizes key factors in good commissioner service. MCS-318 COM-316 Cyberchip for All Ages COM-323 Scouting in the LDS Church This is an overview of Scouting in the LDS Church. The objective is to provide basic principles about the Church and discuss implementation of Scouting programs for effective relationships and networking with all Scouters. For both LDS Church members and non-members. CED710 Tracking Advancement: Scoutbook Internet and Accurately tracking and reporting your unit's advancement is critical to a successful program.
