Amen The Presiding Bishop then says Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Presentation The Bishops and people sit. Representatives of the Diocese of Idaho and larger church, both priests and lay persons, standing before the Presiding Bishop, present the Bishop-Elect, saying Michael, Bishop in the Church of God, the clergy and people of the Diocese of Idaho, trusting in the guidance of the Holy Spirit, have chosen Jos Tharakan to be a bishop and chief pastor. We therefore ask you to lay your hands upon him and in the power of the Holy Spirit to consecrate him a bishop in the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. The Presiding Bishop then directs that the testimonials of the election be read. Patrick Bell When the reading of the testimonials is ended, the Presiding Bishop requires the following promise from the Bishop-Elect. In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, I, Jos Tharakan, chosen Bishop Diocesan of the Church in Idaho, solemnly declare that I do believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the Word of God, and to contain all things necessary to salvation; and I do solemnly engage to conform to the doctrine, discipline, and worship of the Episcopal Church. The Bishop-Elect then signs the above Declaration in the sight of all present. The witnesses add their signatures. All stand. The Presiding Bishop then says the following, or similar words, and asks the response of the people. Brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, you have heard testimony given that Jos Tharakan has been duly and lawfully elected to be a bishop of the Church of God to serve in the Diocese of Idaho. You have been assured of his suitability and that the Church has approved him for this sacred responsibility. Nevertheless, if any of you know any reason why we should not proceed, let it now be made known.

To you, O Lord our God. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. At the end of the litany, after the Kyries, the Presiding Bishop reads the following Collect, first saying Bishop The Lord be with you People And also with you Bishop Let us pray O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquility the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Page 8 The Ministry of the Word All are seated. The Lector first says A Reading from the book of the Prophet Isaiah 61: 1-8 The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion— to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display his glory. They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. Now if the ministry of death, chiseled in letters on stone tablets, came in glory so that the people of Israel could not gaze at Moses’ face because of the glory of his face, a glory now set aside, how much more will the ministry of the Spirit come in glory? For if there was glory in the ministry of condemnation, much more does the ministry of justification abound in glory! When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Deacon The Gospel of the Lord People Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon Hymn Before Examination The Servant Song Will you let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you? Pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant, too. We are pilgrims on a journey, we are travelers on the road; we are here to help each other walk the mile and bear the load. I will hold the Christ-light for you in the nighttime of your fear; I will hold my hand out to you, speak the peace you long to hear. I will weep when you are weeping; when you laugh I’ll laugh with you. I will share your joy and sorrow till we’ve seen this journey through. My brother, the people have chosen you and have affirmed their trust in you by acclaiming your election. A bishop in God’s holy Church is called to be one with the apostles in proclaiming Christ’s resurrection and interpreting the Gospel, and to testify to Christ’s sovereignty as Lord of lords and King of kings. You are called to guard the faith, unity, and discipline of the Church; to celebrate and to provide for the administration of the sacraments of the New Covenant; to ordain priests and deacons and to join in ordaining bishops; and to be in all things a faithful pastor and wholesome example for the entire flock of Christ. With your fellow bishops you will share in the leadership of the Church throughout the world. Your heritage is the faith of patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and those of every generation who have looked to God in hope. Your joy will be to follow him who came, not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many. Are you persuaded that God has called you to the office of bishop? Answer I will, for he is my help. Bishop Will you boldly proclaim and interpret the Gospel of Christ, enlightening the minds and the stirring up the conscience of your people? Answer I will, in the power of the Spirit. Bishop As a chief priest and pastor, will you encourage and support all baptized people in their gifts and ministries, nourish them from the riches of God’s grace, pray for them without ceasing, and celebrate with them the sacraments of our redemption? Answer I will, in the name of Christ, the Shepherd and Bishop of our souls. Bishop Will you guard the faith, unity, and discipline of the Church? Answer I will, for the love of God. Bishop Will you share with your fellow bishops in the government of the whole Church; will you sustain your fellow presbyters and take counsel with them; will you guide and strengthen the deacons and all others who minister in the Church? Answer I will, by the grace given me. Bishop Will you be merciful to all, show compassion to the poor and strangers, and defend those who have no helper? Answer I will, for the sake of Christ Jesus. All stand. The Presiding Bishop then says Jos, through these promises you have committed yourself to God, to serve his Church in the office of bishop. We therefore call upon you, chosen to be a guardian of the Church’s faith, to lead us in confessing that faith.

Then all say together We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. The other bishops stand to the right and to the left of the Presiding Bishop. The hymn, Veni Creator Spiritus is sung by the Cantors Veni Creator Spiritus Veni, creator Spiritus mentes tuorum visita, imple superna gratia, quae tu creasti pectora. Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest, and in our hearts take up Thy rest; come with Thy grace and heav'nly aid, To fill the hearts which Thou hast made. O Comforter, to Thee we cry, Thou heav'nly gift of God most high, Thou Fount of life, and Fire of love, and sweet anointing from above. The Presiding Bishop then begins this Prayer of Consecration God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Father of mercies and God of all comfort, dwelling on high but having regard for the lowly, knowing all things before they come to pass: We give you thanks that from the beginning you have gathered and prepared a people to be heirs of the covenant of Abraham, and have raised up prophets, kings, and priests, never leaving your temple untended. We praise you also that from the creation you have graciously accepted the ministry of those whom you have chosen. The Presiding Bishop and other bishops now lay their hands upon the head of the Bishop-Elect, and say together Therefore, Father, make Jos a bishop in your Church. Pour out upon him the power of your princely Spirit, whom you bestowed upon your beloved Son Jesus Christ, with whom he endowed the apostles, and by whom your Church is built up in every place, to the glory and unceasing praise of your Name. The Presiding Bishop continues To you, O Father, all hearts are open; fill, we pray, the heart of this your servant whom you have chosen to be a bishop in your Church, with such love of you and of all the people, that he may feed and tend the flock of Christ, and exercise without reproach the high priesthood to which you have called him, serving before you day and night in the ministry of reconciliation, declaring Page 15 pardon in your Name, offering the holy gifts, and wisely overseeing the life and work of the Church. In all things may he present before you the acceptable offering of a pure, and gentle, and holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and power and glory in the Church, now and for ever. The People in a loud voice respond AMEN. Invitation to vest our new Bishop Having received the Holy Spirit, let us now vest our new Bishop with the symbols of his office. The new Bishop is now vested according to the order of bishops. After this other symbols of the office may be given. A crozier is presented by the XIII Bishop of Idaho with these words: I give into your hands this pastoral staff. May Christ the good Shepherd uphold you and sustain you as you carry it in his name. Amen. A Bible is presented with these words Receive the Holy Scriptures. Feed the flock of Christ committed to your charge, guard and defend them in his truth, and be a faithful steward of his holy Word and Sacraments. The Presiding Bishop presents to the people their new Bishop. The Clergy and People offer their acclamation and applause.

Then the new Bishop goes to the Lord’s Table as chief Celebrant and, joined by other bishops and presbyters, proceeds with the celebration of the Eucharist. Representatives of the congregation bring the people's offerings of bread and wine, and money or other gifts, to the Deacon or Celebrant. Today’s offering will be designated for the Clergy Education Fund. The people stand while the offerings are presented and placed on the Altar. The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer A The people remain standing.
