Xavier University, Bhubaneswar Sustainability Summit - 2016 School of Sustainability, Xavier University, Bhubaneswar hosted a significant event, the annual Xavier University, Bhubaneswar Sustainability Summit - 2016 at XIMB campus and New Campus, Jatni campus, during August 11-13, 2016. The theme of this year's summit was Energy, Peace and Global Governance. The core agenda of the summit was to create a movement for putting energy and peace in the centre of discourse, to mainstream sustainability in management education and to create a platform at XUB for institutional network among all the actors to promote the mentioned theme. ABOUT XUB Xavier University, Bhubaneswar was established in accordance with the Xavier University Act 2013 and was inaugurated on the 7th of July 2014. The University is a selffinancing institution of higher learning for imparting professional and technical education. The multi – disciplinary courses imparted by the University are helmed within the School of Sustainability, Business Management, Commerce and Communication. These include undergraduate and post graduate degree courses. The student strength of the University at present is more than 1500, including students from diverse management and sustainability linked courses including Sustainability Management, Rural Management, Human Resource Management, Business Management and Mass Communication. There are also students from under-graduation courses such as B.Sc in Sustainable Development and Bachelors in Commerce. ABOUT XIMB 29 years ago, in the Temple City of Bhubaneswar, the Odisha Jesuit Society entered into a social contract with the Government of Odisha to set up Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB). Inspired by the Jesuit spirit of ‘Magis’, or excellence, XIMB strives to be a premier body globally recognized for management education, training, research, and consulting that help build a just and humane society. The Institute is counted among the leading management institutions in the country. XIMB is the proudrecipient of A*** grading by CRISIL, and the ET Now National Education Leadership Award.

About 2nd Annual- Xavier University, Bhubaneswar Sustainability Summit - 2016 The Sustainability Summit is an annual event organized by the School of Sustainability. This year, the 2ndannual Xavier University Sustainability Summit - 2016 was held at XIMB & Xavier University New Campus Jatni campus, during August 11-13, 2016. The theme of this year's summit was Energy, Peace and Global Governance. The core agenda of the summit was to emphasize the need for placing peace and energy in the centre of discourse. Additionally, the annual feature aims to mainstream sustainability in management education and esp. within the academic fraternity, cement XUB’s role as a change agent andleader in context of the highly relevant theme. This year's theme lays emphasis on the linkages between energy and conflicts, esp. in the geopolitical sphere and stresses the role of policy makers with context to sustainability. The on-going conflicts in the global scenario are largely attributed to the geopolitics of oil and the insatiable desire to control the natural resources. The summit also holds importance in the background of the Sustainable Development Goals, adopted in 2015 by the United Nations’ General Assembly, where SDG 7 is fully devoted to achieving affordable and clean energy.

With 156 speakers and delegates, the 2nd Annual School of Sustainability Sustainability Summit 2016 was inaugurated on 12th August, 2016, at Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar. His Excellency Dr. S. C. Jamir, Hon’ble Governor of Odisha, inaugurated the summit and presided over the event as the Chief Guest. The other distinguished personalities who graced the occasion were Shri. Upendra Tripathy, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, Mr. Anup Sahay, Chief, Corporate Strategy & Planning, Tata Steel, Mr. P S Narayan, VP &Head, Sustainability, WIPRO and Ms.Yumi Bae, Chief, Field Office, UNICEF, Bhubaneswar. The 2 day summit was organized in parallel tracks, based on the four sub-themes of the Summit: Building Peace and Protecting our Common Home, Sustainable Energy and Future: Challenges and Choices, Advancing Sustainability Education &Research on Energy, Peace & Global Governance and Sustainability & Global Governance. In his opening address, His Excellency, Dr S. C. Jamir, spoke of the criticality of humanity progressing on a sustainable development pathway, especially in context of the profound implications these issues have for global peace, stability and security. International visitors from USA, Indonesia, Malaysia, Qatar and Dubai participated in the Summit. Representatives from companies like Wipro, Tata Steel, Tata Sustainability Group, Aditya Birla, Nalco, ACC Ltd, Bharat Petroleum, Dr. Reddy's Lab, Earnest & Young, ITC, Jindal Steel & Power, Tata Motors, Tata Power were present. Government and NonGovernment Organisations like UNGCI, GRI,&UNICEF, Wetlands International South Asia, CSE,CYSD,NABARD, MNRE, South African High Commission: New Delhi also participated. The summit also had an important event on the first day where Wipro collaborated with XUB to conduct a Best Paper Awards on the Track 'Advancing Sustainability in Management Education and Research on Energy, Peace and Global Governance'. The opening day of the summit was inaugurated by Mr. Tony Henshaw Chief sustainability officer of Aditya Birla Group and the occasion was graced by dignitaries Mr. Lingaraj Dinny - Wipro, Dr. Aditi Haldar - GRI , Mr. Prabodya Acharya - Aditya Birla Group. On this occasion Vice Chancellor Xavier University & Director XIMB Prof. Dr. Fr. Paul Fernandes said “Xavier University Bhubaneswar is the first Jesuit University in India established with the mission of ‘enabling people to lead extraordinary lives, and be the light

for the world.’ As part of this mission, we have established the Xavier School of Sustainability as we believe in addressing ecological and sustainability concerns necessary for people to live extraordinary lives" and Former Dean, School of Sustainability, Prof S Peppin said "We are humbled by the overwhelming response to this Summit and for development to be truly sustainable, we need a different global order that promotes peace and equitable consumption of energy and natural resources". The summit also witnessed colourful and enthusiastic cultural programme by the students of MBA Sustainability Management and BSc Sustainable Development of School of Sustainability, Xavier University, Bhubaneswar. The Wipro - Xavier University Best Paper Award was presented to the winners during the valedictory function by Prof. Dr. Fr. Paul Fernandes. Seeds of Hope Exhibition One of the highlights of the summit was a panel exhibition named as " Seeds of Hope". The Seeds of Hope is a joint initiative of SGI, Sokka Gokkai International and Earth Charter International.Through its use of the powerful visual medium, the ‘Seeds of Hope’ exhibition – consists of a visual documentary on the importance of “Learn, Reflect and Empower”. The initiative comprises of an exhibition of 24 panels, each professing 24 ideals that inspire and proliferate sustainable living and sustainable development practices.Eight individuals and Groups who have wrestled with the cause of change and integration around the world are on showcase through the exhibition and form the crux of ‘personal struggle and commitment’ that the ‘Seeds of Hope’ intends to achieve.Till now, the seeds of hope exhibition has been exhibited in 27 countries around the world; translated into 13 languages and seen by 1.5 million people till date. The SGI is a non-governmental global institution with its origins in pre-war Japan. Its emergence was viewed as a direct consequence to the oppression that occurred under the militarist government in that era. Currently, SGI operates in 94 countries while its members live in 192 countries. The SGI Charteradvocates the principles of peace, culture and environmental conservation based on the teachings of Nichiren Buddhism. In conjunction with the Earth Charter, SGI promotes the idea of individual and community based social and environmental pro-activism through the ‘Seeds of Hope’ initiative.

In her address to the students, Ms Vandana Jain, area in-charge of SGI’s Indian chapter, Bharat Soka Gakkai expressed her hope that the exhibition touched chords with the enthusiastic students’ community. She appealed to the students to take the message forward, since the youth are the ones with the power to bring about much needed change in societal trajectories. The main message put forward by her was "To educate, empower and encourage people to take actions" and “ Be the change you wish to see” and iterated that sustainability is not only about the sustainable use of the environment but also ensuring social justice and peace to people. People need to be the agents of the change which they wish.
