Saturday June 12 A VIRTUAL EVENT BENEFITING THE MANHATTAN BEACH EDUCATION FOUNDATION AND ENDOWMENT

Welcome To The 27th Annual Manhattan Wine Auction We may not all be gathering together in person, but the important traditions of this iconic celebration of our schools and community live on — great food, great wine, and a great cause — our public schools. Table Of Contents Welcome 2 Evening Program 4 Legacy Award 5 MBEF Overview, Grants and Paddle Raise 6 The MBEF Endowment 9 Sponsors 10 This past year was and continues to be a testament to how communities can come together for the greater good despite difficult circumstances. We have struggled together, celebrated together, and tonight, we stand together with a renewed hope at the promise of the next school year. The funds we raise through the Manhattan Wine Auction make it possible for our public schools to provide a vast array of programs that enrich and enhance our children’s education. Together we can move beyond the challenges of this last year and provide our students with the tools they need to excel. The event would not be possible without the tireless contributions of so many. We thank the restaurants and wineries for sharing their offerings with guests at home. We thank our silent and live auction donors, the Wine Advisory Board, and our sponsors for their significant investment in our schools. We thank the many volunteers who have worked tirelessly to help make this event a success. Finally, we thank you — our parents, partners, and members of our community — for investing in our students, our schools, and our future. 2021 Legacy Award The Pipkin Family Great Schools Today It was the initiative and vision of a small but determined group of Manhattan Beach parents that first brought the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation to life in 1983. Since then, the dedication to ensuring exceptional educational opportunities in our Manhattan Beach public schools has flourished for decades. The Manhattan Beach Education Foundation (MBEF) is a community driven fundraising organization, which supplements state funding for programs that inspire learning, enrich teaching, and promote innovation and academic excellence in the public schools of Manhattan Beach. The MBEF Legacy Award was first introduced in 2020 as a way in which to honor those individuals, families or businesses who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the MBEF mission. Rod Spackman, former manager of Policy, Government and Public Affairs at Chevron was honored in 2020 with the inaugural award. MBEF was founded by a group of parents committed to strengthening our public schools almost four decades ago. At a time when school funding was at an all-time low, private donations were critical to providing a quality education for our children. Over thirty-five years later, our public schools remain underfunded and MBEF continues to play a significant role in supporting — in small or large part — nearly every academic pursuit and enrichment opportunity across our seven campuses. This year, the MBEF Board of Directors has selected the Pipkin family as the recipient of the 2021 Manhattan Beach Education Foundation Legacy Award. With seven children, and now several, grandchildren, growing up in Manhattan Beach, the Pipkins recognize that a truly phenomenal public-school system requires partnership with the local community and were among the trailblazers who committed to the MBEF mission early on. Jan and Chet Pipkin began their support in 1994 as a family, and grew that support as their company, Belkin International, grew alongside. Opportunities in education, particularly hands-on ones, have always been priorities for both Jan and Chet. As well as the desire and drive for constant improvement. The story of Belkin is similar to many other tech firms, it was launched in the garage of Chet’s parents and was fed with the belief that technology would be the next large movement in history. Since that epiphany, Belkin grew from the ground up, with Jan and Chet working side-by-side to build the business. Along with Belkin itself as an organization, a strong investment in philanthropy also grew, particularly for opportunities to invoke curiosity and exploration. The longstanding support of MBEF by the Pipkin family is proof of this commitment and has encouraged just that — hands-on opportunities that enrich the lives of students. It is with great appreciation and gratitude that we honor the Pipkin family for their generosity and leadership in our efforts to strengthen our public schools. Without the support of our community through MBEF, our public schools in Manhattan Beach would look drastically different. Funding for our schools is not what you would expect. The assumption that our property taxes adequately fund public education is simply not true. The fact is our state provides barely enough to fund the basics — not the enriched educational opportunities that we strive to provide our children. To stabilize the classroom experience, a large portion of MBEF funding was redirected to fund classroom teachers. Ultimately, the cuts severely impacted beloved MBEF programs at all of our schools, significantly diminishing a number of them. Great Schools Tomorrow Manhattan Wine Auction Sponsors Thank you to the 27th Annual Manhattan Wine Auction sponsors and supporters. We are incredibly grateful for your generous investment in our students and our schools. The MBEF Endowment provides MBEF with a continuing and sustainable funding source that will expand and enhance the quality of public education in Manhattan Beach, now and for generations to come. Event Host Platinum Sponsors MBEF has a successful history of providing a way for parents to make a meaningful, positive investment in their children’s education. As a myriad of challenges continue to face public education in our state, sustainable sources of revenue have become even more critical to our local public schools. The MBEF Endowment helps to serve this purpose by providing an annual disbursement that supports immediate program needs while still preserving the principle of the investment. The Endowment’s annual return on investment will continue to grow as the principle grows, making up for the instability of public-school funding at the state level. Generous gifts from supporters, and strong long-term investment returns, have fueled the MBEF Endowment balance to over 21M. Under the Endowment Disbursement Policy, which follows the prudent standards outlined in the Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act of 2006 (“UPMIFA”), this balance will allow the Endowment to distribute approximately 1M annually. As the Auction has grown in reputation, so has the Wine Advisory Board — WAB for short. During the months leading up to the Manhattan Wine Auction, the WAB holds a number of gatherings, with members and non-members alike, to share their passion for wine and commitment to strengthen our schools. Over 80% of the wines that are auctioned off as part of the silent and live auctions are donated by WAB members, and the rest come from all the wineries who participate in the Wine Auction. Lot 102 Lot 101 Ready to Pour What could make the night more special than a magnum each of Champagne, Chardonnay and Cabernet? Pop the cork of the 1990 Charles Heidsieck Brut Millesime Champagne! This champagne is both refined in texture, as well as complex in nature, revealing notes of honey, coffee, citrus confit and ginger. The 2014 Aubert Eastside Chardonnay has hints of smoky crème brûlée intermixed with white peach, nectarine, orange marmalade, honeysuckle, and buttered apples. This great Chardonnay is considered to be Grand Cru quality — incredibly pure, dense, and long. Known for its aromas of tobacco leaf, dark cherry, and of floral perfume, the 2011 Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon completes this lot. The silky entry of this vintage leads to a juicy midpalate of red fruit and earth before lingering on an elegant finish. These three magnums will be delivered to your door the night of the Manhattan Wine Auction to enjoy with friends for the remainder of the Livestream Show.
