SOLOMON’S PROVERBS A Cumulative Bibliography Ted A. Hildebrandt Frederic Clarke Putnam Ted Hildebrandt & Fred Putnam, 2014

Preliminary Materials 2 Preface My (Ted’s) interest in proverbial wisdom was originally sparked and reaffirmed by the birth of each of my wonderful children (Rebekah, Natanya, Zachary, and Elliott); I wanted to be a father who would guide his children into engaging life in a godly, wise, and reflective manner within the context of faith and the fear of the LORD. During their playful childhoods, the proverbial sentences provided insights, structure and concrete direction. Their adolescence shattered many of my assumptions, highlighting a dissonance that I had formerly ignored both in life and in the proverbial sentences. Now, as the nest has emptied, and our relational roles have matured from pedagogical parent to collaborative friend, the proverbial sentences echo their wisdom in another stage of life. It is to my friends (Rebekah, Natanya, Zachary and Elliott) and soul-mate, Annette—Madame Wisdom incarnate—that I dedicate this work from a father and husband who has struggled with understanding and extending wisdom’s call from simple daily routines to the vistas and incomprehensibilities of a life lived in the presence of a God who lovingly bids his children pursue wisdom amidst the disorientations and complexities of life. Many people deserve thanks for their help in collecting nearly four thousand bibliographic entries. These include Jim Darlock of Gordon-Conwell Seminary library who has been a research guide, and William Darr of Grace College library, whose friendship and research support for decades have enriched my work since the days of my dissertation on proverbial poetry in the 1980s. My valued colleagues at Gordon College—Drs. Elaine Phillips, Steve Hunt, Dave Mathewson, Roger Green, and Marv Wilson—encourage me almost every day to emerge from the prison of scholarly and personal isolation. It has been a great delight to have been able to work collaboratively with Dr. Fred Putnam and benefit from his careful attention to detail, witness his brilliant effectiveness in the art of teaching, and to reflect on his insights into Hebrew poetics. Truly, this project would still be buried on a harddrive someplace without Fred’s help. Finally, I would be remiss not to mention Dr. David Clines, who plucked this work in its rough form from among the billions of web-pages. Thanks to his careful cutting and polishing a jagged stone has become worthy of publication. His meticulous attention and extensive (perhaps exhaustive) knowledge of bibliographic citations and resources have improved this project beyond what either author could have imagined. Any error in reference or topical placement, however, must be reckoned to my account as vestigial unwanted remnants of that rough original bibliography. I (Fred) want to thank Ted for inviting me to join him in this work—working together has been both enjoyable and worthwhile. (And e-mail glitches have given us both a much greater respect and appreciation for Brown, Driver, and Briggs, and many others who collaborated on larger projects, at far greater distances, and with much slower means of communication.) I also thank the faculty and library staff of Westminster Theological Seminary in Glenside (PA), whose generous hospitality has been a great encouragement that enabled me to pursue this project. The students in my doctoral seminar on the book of Proverbs have also tracked down references, corrected typos, and offered helpful suggestions.

Preliminary Materials 3 And my wife, Emilie, and our daughters, Lydia and Abigail, who continue to be my crown and delight, have been unflagging supports; to them go my greatest thanks with much love. We both also thank Jim Eisenbraun for allowing us to include the references from the Cumulative Index to the Grammar & Syntax of Biblical Hebrew (Putnam 1996), and trust that these will make the bibliography even more useful. Preliminary Materials 4 Introduction This bibliography attempts to catalogue research on the book of Proverbs through 2014, and to organize it in a way that will prove intuitive to those doing research in biblical studies. Origins. It began as part of a website (http://faculty.gordon.edu/hu/bi/ted hildebrandt) designed to make scholarly resources more available to students and the general public, with the modest goal of providing a complete list of research on the biblical book of Proverbs. My ultimate goal was to “open the door” for those beginning to explore proverbial wisdom by offering an interdisciplinary resource that would ease their pursuit of this fascinating field of study. Wanting to help others read biblical proverbs in the context of its ancient Near Eastern setting, I gradually extended the list beyond “biblical studies” per se; wanting the proverbs to be read as proverbs, I extended it in turn into the areas of folklore, paremiology, and psychology (including gerontology, cognitive science, and the use of proverbs in psychological testing). Organization & Contents. The first three sections provide a comprehensive overview and seminal “library” on Proverbs studies: A list of major, now-standard works (Top Picks) is followed by bibliographies on Proverbs and Wisdom (Section 1); Section 2 lists general commentaries and introductions, monographs, history of interpretation, applied studies, and texts and translations. Section 3 focuses on proverbial sitz im leben or “social location” (so Fox)—a general topic of vigorous discussion and debate—with entries that cover “king/queen/court”, “sages/schools”, “folk”, and “family”. Section 4 turns to the literary background of Proverbs—to comparative ancient Near Eastern literature. Entries here explore wisdom and instructional literature from Mesopotamia (Sumer, Babylon, Assyria), Egypt, the Levant, and Anatolia, concluding with entries from the Persian and Hellenistic periods. Section 5 covers poetic features and specific proverbial genre forms (acrostic, Tob-min, fable etc.), including larger compositional units (e.g., Prov. 10-29). The resources listed in Section 6 (“Paremiology”) offer a more universal and global—a more human—understanding of gnomic material. These folklorists (Mieder, Dundes et al.) offer insights on the nature, interpretation, and definition of the proverbial from both living and historical cultures in studies that have benefited biblical scholars such as Fontaine, Westermann, and Golka. Section 7 (“Psychological Studies”) has three foci: testing/diagnostics, cognitive brain research, and gerontology (wisdom among the aged), areas in which the work of Honeck, Sternberg, and Baltes (e.g.) provide rich, largely untapped, interdisciplinary resources for the biblical studies scholar. The last three sections focus on biblical studies. Section 8 highlights the intertextual relationships of Proverbs and Wisdom with Torah, History, Prophets, Poetry, Apocrypha, Apocalyptic, and New Testament literatures. Section 9 lists topics that are native to the wisdom of Proverbs (speech, friendship, wise/fool, Madame Wisdom, etc.), and Section 10 lists entries by section and chapter from the book of Proverbs. Fred’s

Preliminary Materials 5 index to works on Hebrew grammar and syntax (e.g., GKC, Waltke & O’Connor) precedes the bibliographical entries for each chapter of Proverbs, listing every biblical citation in the major reference works. Finally, Section 11 (“Uncategorized”) is a catch-all for entries that did not seem to fit well elsewhere. The author index will undoubtedly prove useful for those attempting to follow specific writers. We decided not to use an “op. cit.” system, but rather to include the full citation in each entry. While this makes the overall work slightly more bulky, this avoids forcing the reader to return to the original citing, which makes the bibliography more user-friendly (no flipping back-and-forth). We preferred full citations to abbreviations for, e.g., journal titles, for the same reason. Examining the listings yields an interesting (but unforeseen) result: the bibliography documents the flow of scholarly interest over the decades. It becomes clear which passages and themes have received the bulk of attention (cf., e.g., the lengthy listings for Proverbs 8, Proverbs 31, and Amenemope with the light “coverage” of , e.g., Proverbs 29), and which verses and issues await scholarly elucidation. In the sections on the chapters of Proverbs (Section 10: Text), the passage discussed in the article or book is listed in brackets after the bibliographical listing, unless the reference is included in the title. It is our hope that this bibliography will prove useful—a rich resource that invites the novice, and stimulates the seasoned scholar, guiding both as they explore this wonderful book of wisdom. The field that exploded in the 1980’s and 1990’s continues strong as we proceed through the initial decade of the twenty-first century, a time when the insights and counsel of divine wisdom are more needed than ever.
