What is a Lexile? Measure is based on 2 strong predicators of howdifficult text is to comprehend– Word Frequency– Sentence Length

Grade Equivalents & Lexile Levels Grade equivalents are scores based on theperformance of students in the test’s norming group. A student in grade 5 who scores 5.9 on a GE for endof year fifth grade is in the 50th percentile of thestudents at that age who took the test Lexile Levels are fundamentally different than GradeEquivalents.

Lexile Levels The Lexile measure represents a student’s level on adevelopmental scale of reading ability-the LexileScale. The Lexile is a measure against a standard, whereas aGrade Equivalent is measured against performance ofa norm group

Grade Equivalents Should not be interpreted literally, but are roughestimates of grade level AVERAGE performance. Just because a student scores 7.9 on a fourth gradereading test, it should not be assumed that she hasmastered 7th grade reading material
