Whitburn Church of England Academy NewsletterThe Principal’s Post — March 2013One of the highlights of this half-term has been welcoming our French visitors from Collège St Jean-Baptiste deLa Salle, Charleville-Mezières, which is in the Champagne region of North East France. This is an exciting newventure for Whitburn and we hope that the French exchange will now become an annual event. I know that ourYear 8 pupils involved this year are very excited about their opportunity to visit their host families in France inJune. One of my aims this year has been to create opportunities for the development of Modern ForeignLanguages. The changes made to the Year 9 options system have certainly led to a significant increase in thenumber of pupils taking languages after Year 9 and I very much hope that ultimately this will lead to more of ourpupils going on to study languages at A level and beyond.Speaking of A levels, we keenly await the decision on the capital funding for our Sixth Form build. We expect adecision from the Education Funding Agency by the end of April. As everyone is aware, the funding ‘pot’available is very limited under current economic conditions. However, we believe that we have a very strong caseand even if we are unsuccessful in this round of funding we will continue to apply in future rounds. As I havealways maintained, it is a case of ‘when’ not ‘if’ for our Sixth Form. With South Tyneside College’s decision thisweek to stop delivering A level courses, there is an even more pressing case for outstanding schools to have theirown Sixth Form to deliver high quality A level courses. I will, of course, let you know as soon as we have anyfurther news on Sixth Form development. On a personal note, I was saddened by the news that David Miliband is resigning as MP for South Shields.Setting aside party politics, as a constituency MP he has been an exceptionally strong supporter of schools andyoung people in general. His speeches at our Democracy Day events have certainly encouraged our pupils toparticipate actively in our democracy, regardless of their personal political views. I hope that his successor as MPfor South Shields will continue the ‘battle’ to secure the best possible education for all young people, regardless oftheir background. We end the term by celebrating our Easter Assembly and in particular we focus on Maundy Thursday, as we havethe rare opportunity of holding our assembly on this Holy Day. I hope that everyone has a peaceful and relaxingEaster break. I look forward to welcoming our pupils back on Monday 15th April, ready for a very busy summerterm!Contact UsPhone: 0191 529 3712Absence Reporting: 0844 239 3457 or text07624 816806Fax: 0191 529 5569Email: office@whitburncofeacademy.orgWeb site www.whitburncofeacademy.orgDocument available in large font, alternative language or audio format on request

Parents/carers who have been issued with a pass must ensure that a parkingbay is used and should not block the road. When collecting pupils after 4.00pm, please parkin the bus bays on Rackly Way or use the available parking bays adjacent to the main gates. The volume of traffic, cars parked outside of designated bays and occasional excessivespeeds of irresponsible drivers, present a significant danger to pupils and staff. If necessarywe will be forced to put extra safety measures in place, in conjunction with local TrafficEnforcement authorities. We appreciate your on-going support in this matter and thank thevast majority of our parents and carers for supporting us in keeping our pupils safe as theyleave the site.UniformThe way uniform is currently ordered will be changing as of Sunday 14th April.
