ABOUT IGS & IGC 2021ABOUT NIT-TRICHYIndian Geotechnical Society (IGS) (Formerly known as theIndian National Society of Soil Mechanics and FoundationEngineering) was established in 1948. The Society was affiliatedto the International Society of Soil Mechanics and FoundationEngineering (ISSMGE) in the same year and working towardsthe fulfilment and promotion of its objectives. IndianGeotechnical Conference (IGC) is the annual national flagshipevent of Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS, New Delhi). Thisyear, it will be jointly hosted by the IGS Trichy Chapter andNIT Trichy. The organizing committee of the conference invitesthe original research and field case study papers from theresearchers, academicians, and practicing engineers to bepresented in the Indian Geotechnical Conference-2021 (IGC2021) during 16th – 18th December 2021, at NIT Trichy. The National Institute of Technology, Trichy (NIT-T) (formerlyknown as Regional Engineering College) situated in the heart ofTamil Nadu on the banks of river Cauvery, was started as a jointand cooperative venture of the Government of India and theGovernment of Tamil Nadu in 1964 with a view to catering theneeds of manpower in technology for the country. Because of thisrich experience, this institution was granted Deemed UniversityStatus with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and Govt. of India in2003 and renamed as National Institute of Technology. NITTrichy is one of the 31 NITs established by the Government ofIndia. The institution offers Under Graduate Courses in tenbranches and Post Graduate Courses in thirty-one disciplines ofScience, Engineering & Technology besides M.S. (by Research)and Ph.D. in all the departments. About 6200 students are enrolledin the institute and around 500 faculty members are employed inregular positions. NIT-T is ranked top among 31 NITs in Indiaand is presently occupying 9th position in NIRF ranking ofengineering institutes.ABOUT IGS TRICHY CHAPTERIndian Geotechnical Society Trichy chapter was inaugurated on14th February 2014 & is one among the 48 active local chapters. The objective of the chapter is to provide a common forum foracademicians, research workers, designers, constructionengineers, equipment manufacturers and others interested ingeotechnical activities. It also works for promoting cooperationamong those members for the advancement and disseminationof knowledge in Geotechnical Engineering and their practicalapplication. The chapter has organized many workshops &conferences in a short period which includes 6th Indian YoungGeotechnical Engineers Conference (6IYGEC), a biennial eventof IGS hosted during 10th & 11th March, 2017.VENUENIT-Trichy is in Tiruchirappalli. Astrophysics needs input of practically all sub-disciplines of physics and thus a course on astrophysics cannot be self-contained. However, the course should be accessible to students with just a general introduction to physics. Few sections of the text that are somewhat more advanced and that can be omitted are marked by stars. I will be glad to receive feedback from the readers of these .
