InAustralia, I live near the ocean and I was inspired to writeThe Little Wave after I saw a group of very excited kidsrun onto a surf beach near my house. They were part ofa camp to support families from rural and remote areas. Some of them were experiencing waves, saltwater andsandcastles for the first time. I thought a story about acountry class coming to visit the beach would beinteresting.Page 6BOOK of the YEAR: Older ReadersThe Boy Who Steals HousesAuthor: C.G.DrewsPublisher: Hachette AustraliaThe publisher says: .Sam is only fifteen but he and his autistic older brother,Avery, have been abandoned by every relative he's everknown. Junee High SchoolNSW Premier’s Reading Challenge 2020NSW Premier’s Reading challenge concludes on Friday28 of August 2020. Please ensure that all readingrecords are updated. If you would like assistance withupdating your reading record, please come and see me.The CBCA judges say. This is a heart-warming read for young audiences. ThisQueensland author uses a diverse range of literarytechniques to develop insight into homelessness, domestic violence and the struggles faced by the twobrothers in this story. The creative and compassionatestory describes a fiercely overprotective brother whogoes to great lengths to keep his autistic sibling safe, and the warmth and humour of the De Lainey family, where they find themselves fitting in despite severalobstacles along the way. The narrative is choreographedperfectly, allowing Sam to experience some form ofsocial justice, in a life torn by abuse, disability andpoverty. Drew’s skill lies in encouraging the reader tomake an emotional commitment to characters who areflawed and complex while approaching difficultconcepts with warmth and humour. The language has adistinct beat and rhythm which will appeal to teenagersand the writing style is engaging enough to reach anaudience that is seeking a cohesive yet creative story. This is a novel filled with heart and is the perfect balancebetween lyrical and readable. Please return overdue library books.Individual notices will be emailed to students.Mrs SpeerLibrarian/ Year 8 AdviserPage 7
