Block Y uses half-square triangles (HST) that finish 2" square.Use your favorite method to make HST, or follow these directions.Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each Fabric F 3" square(Diagram 1). Place a marked square on a Fabric I square, rightsides together. Sew 4" seam on each side of the marked line;cut apart on the marked line. Press open to make pieced HST.Make 30 total HST. Set aside.KLIMPFP Unit – Make 15Diagram 2CBand #1CMFCHFBand #2CFHHGGBBJBand #4HGBand #3Block Y BandsMake 2 eachIPFP Unit12" x 122"#3#4HST#5#1#2I4. Referring to the Block Y diagram, arrange 2 HST, a PFPunit, and a segment from each band in the order shown.Join the parts to make a block center. Sew Fabric I stripsto the block. Make 15 Block Y.HBand #512" x 102"3. If you prefer to piece the remainderof the block traditionally, cut 22"squares instead of 22" strips from theappropriate fabrics, and skip to the nextstep. These directions are for makingstrip-pieced bands. Referring to theBlock Y Band diagrams, join 22" x 21"strips in the order shown to make 2 ofeach band. Press seam allowances in thedirection of the arrows. Cut a total of 15segments, each 22" wide, from each band.I HST – Make 30Diagram 12. The strawberry stem unit is made with paper-foundation piecingmethods (PFP). Photocopy the full-size PFP patterns 15 timeseach. Cut patches out of the appropriate fabrics, cuttingthem slightly larger than each patch.Using PFP methods, stitch the patchesto each paper pattern. Remove theM 22" x 21"22"paper. Join the 2 halves to make a PFPUnit (Diagram 2). Make 15 total.Hint: If you prefer to piece the unitstraditionally, make an acrylic patternof each shape, including 4" seamallowances all around. Very Berry Quilt8. Fussy-cut the 8 Fabric D border strips lengthwise from thesame part of the print, centering the narrow stripe. Joinstrips to make the lengths needed. Join Fabric E borderstrips to make lengths needed, matching the print so designlooks continuous. Matching centers, sew a Fabric D and aFabric E border strip together. Sew to the quilt, starting andstopping stitching 4" from the quilt’s raw edge. Repeat onall sides. Miter the corners and trim the excess.Finishing the Quilt9. Layer the quilt with batting and backing andbaste. Quilt in the ditch around borders andblock patches. Quilt around the printed motifsin the outer border.
