Yet time has slipped by and we mustnow begin to prepare you for the next phase ofyour education.For the first two years of secondary schoolyou have followed a broad range of academicsubjects and now, as you enter Key StageFour, you will for the first time have a say in thesubjects you wish to study for the next threeyears.In September you will return to school, blazerson, ready to begin your GCSE programmeof study. We will then have three years toprepare you for public examinations in eachof these subjects at the end of year 11. Publicexamination is really important. Achieving goodgrades increases your options in life mostimmediately with regard to entry into 6th formand later into university. We therefore do all wecan to ensure all TIFS pupils perform to theirpotential.The first step on this journey is choosing the rightsubjects for your success. As you are aware,all pupils study for the English Baccalaureate(Maths, English (Literature and Language),Double Science, either History or Geographyand a Language). Pupils will also study for twooptional GCSE subjects. Extra GCSEs will beoffered as part of the extra-curricular programmethroughout Key Stage Four.The process for choosing the right GCSEsubjects is outlined in this booklet and, asalways, your mentor is there to support youevery step of the way.Kind regards,Mr S. They will also beexpected to develop higher-level skillssuch as reasoning, interpretation andcommunication on the one hand,and solving problems in context onthe other. At least half the marks areawarded to these higher level skills,i.e. being able to use maths to solvetypical “real-world” problems.How will I be assessed?100% examination at the end of thecourse.Three exam papers, one noncalculator and two calculator, each 1h30m.Are there any entryrequirements?No, maths is compulsory.Where could it lead?A-Level in Maths or Further Maths.The subject is an essential part ofmany courses and future careers,especially in science and engineering.What would complement thiscourse?Sciences, especially Physics.

Scientificunderstanding is changing our livesand is vital to the world’s futureprosperity. All learners will be taughtessential aspects of the knowledge,methods, processes and uses ofscience.Practical work is an intrinsic partof science and practical skills willcontinue to be developed throughoutthis course. There are 16 practicalsthat all pupils will carry out and writeup during the course as elementsfrom a number of the practicals will beassessed in the written examinations.How will I be assessed?Students will be entered foreither Foundation or Higher tierexaminations.There are four exams in total. Twocovering Life and EnvironmentalScience and two covering PhysicalSciences.All of the papers are 1hour and45minutes in length. Questionstyles include multiple choice,structured, closed and open shortanswer questions, with emphasis onknowledge and application.Are there any entryrequirements?No.Where could it lead?Many jobs require a scientificbackground for example medicine,engineering, dentistry, research posts.What would complement thiscourse?Geology and PE.TRIPLE SCIENCEExam Board: AQAWhat will I learn?Studying the separate Sciences ofBiology, Chemistry and Physics meansthat students will cover more contentand to a greater depth than the GCSEcombined Science course. The tripleScience course will provide excellentpreparation for AS and A-Level studies.There are two examinations foreach discipline, each exam is 1hour45minutes long.Practical work is an intrinsic partof science and practical skills willcontinue to be developed throughoutthis course.
