2019 ABORTION STATISTICSExecutive SummaryPennsylvania has been monitoring and reporting on abortion data since 1975. This report is producedpursuant to Section 3214 of the Abortion Control Act, 18 Pa. C.S. § 3214(e)(1).In 2019, there were 31,018 abortions performed in Pennsylvania. Nearly half, (14,816) of all abortionsperformed in Pennsylvania were to white women, and 13,516 were to black or African-American women.Abortions to women of Hispanic origin accounted for 3,336, or 10.8 percent, of all abortions in 2019. Morethan 87 percent (27,221) of the abortions performed in Pennsylvania in 2019 were to unmarried women.The largest age group having abortions was 25-29, accounting for 9,529 (29.9 percent) of all 2019 abortions.Women under age 20 accounted for 8.2 percent of all abortions in 2019, and women under age 18 accountedfor 2.4 percent. Comparatively, in 2018, women under age 20 accounted for 8.6 percent, and women underage 18 accounted for 2.7 percent.Similar to 2018, 92.8 percent of the abortions performed in 2019 were on Pennsylvania residents. Residents ofother states, territories and other countries accounted for just 2,222 abortions in 2019.Of the abortions performed in 2019 in Pennsylvania, 83.3 percent were performed in five counties: Allegheny;Delaware; Northampton; Philadelphia; and York.More than 40 percent of Pennsylvania residents having abortions were residents of Philadelphia County.Other counties with a large number of resident abortions included: Allegheny (3,265); Delaware (1,839);Montgomery (1,652); and Bucks (934). Of all 67 counties, 34 (50.7 percent) showed a decrease in thenumber of resident abortions performed in 2019 compared to 2018.In 2019, there were 285 reports of complications from abortions that were submitted by physicians; 59.2percent more than the 179 reported in 2018. More than 82 percent of the complications were related toretained products of conception, 12.3 percent to bleeding and 1.8 percent to infection.Notes: The source for the number of abortions reported in Pennsylvania in 2019 is the "Report of Induced Termination of Pregnancy," whichis an individual report filed for each procedure. The source for the complications data is "Abortions: Report of Complications," a separatereporting form completed by physicians who have provided medical care to a woman because of a complication resulting from an abortionor attempted abortion.Unknowns are excluded from all calculations.2019 Abortion StatisticsPennsylvania Department of Health1
