MAC 2311: Calculus I with Analytic GeometryMW 8:30 – 10:45 in UP 175Spring 2019Instructor:Office Phone:Email:Instructor Webpage:Course Webpage:Daniel J Bueller(727) courses.spcollege.eduText:Calculus Early Transcendental Functions, 7e, by Larson and EdwardsPrerequisite:MAC 1140 and MAC 1114, or MAC 1147, or appropriate score on the CPT.Course Description:Major topics include limits and continuity, the derivative of algebraic, trigonometric, logarithmic, exponential functions, inverse trigonometricfunctions, hyperbolic and inverse hyperbolic functions, implicitdifferentiation, applications of the derivative, differentials, indefinite anddefinite integrals, and indeterminate forms.Course Goals:1. The student will illustrate the limit and continuity of real-valuedfunctions of a single variable.2. The student will apply differentiation methods and theorems.3. The student will apply the methods of antidifferentiation of a functionand its applications.4. The student will apply the methods of the Riemann sum and theRiemann integral of a function.Tests:There will be 6 tests throughout the semester (see calendar for testdates). If one’s final exam score is higher than their lowest test score, then the final exam will replace said lowest test score.Homework:Homework problems are listed on a separate sheet. Homework will beturned in and checked for completion on each test day. Students maychoose not to turn in homework and consequently that portion of thegrade would be omitted*.Attendance:Students will be credited with 1 attendance point for every class period inwhich they arrive on-time (within the first five minutes of class) and staythrough the duration of class.Final Exam:Monday May 6th. This exam is comprehensive. The final may be exempt ifboth the student’s test average and overall grade going into the exam isat least an 80%.

So an A is 603 points and a B is 536 points. Also note thatthese points include homework points which the student may choose toforego. Grade thresholds would be recalculated accordingly.Extra Credit:Students taking the final exam may obtain up to 16 points (2%) of extracredit by completely reworking each of the six tests and turning them inon the day of the Final Exam. The extra credit will not be applied to thosenot taking the final exam and thus cannot be used to reach exemption.Calculators:Graphing calculator use is encouraged for this course preferably the TI-83Plus or TI-84 Plus. Symbolic calculators like the TI-89 and some TI-Nspiresare prohibited during tests as are cell phone calculators. Graphingcalculators may not be permitted on a test depending on the material.Important Dates:January 18th – Last day to drop course and receive a refundJanuary 21st – MLK Day; no classMarch 11th & 13th – Spring Break; no classMarch 27st – Withdrawal deadline to receive a grade of “W”Attendance Policy:The college-wide attendance policy is included in the Syllabus . The policy notes thateach instructor is to exercise professional judgment and define “activeparticipation” in class (and therefore “attendance”), and publish thatdefinition in each syllabus. For this class, attendance is defined as thestudent attending every class and arriving/leaving on time. The studentmay be subject to administrative withdrawal from the course with agrade of WF if they are deemed, by the Instructor, to be not participating. Not participating can take any of the following forms: Being absent for the majority of classes through the first three weeks. Amassing 4 or more unexcused absences by the withdraw deadline. Having an overall grade of less than 50% after the withdraw deadline.

It is designed to improve the quality of instruction at St.Petersburg College. All student responses are confidential andanonymous and will be used solely for the purpose of performanceimprovement.Contingency Plan:In case of a natural disaster or an otherwise unforeseen event that woulddisrupt the delivery of classes on campus for an extended periodof time, we will continue the course as planned via teaching andassessment materials to be uploaded via MyCourses.

Other Policies and Miscellanea: The student is responsible know of anything announced in class or via MyCourses email.Should there be a scheduling conflict on a test day, the student may take the test earlyor late only if the make-up test is arranged before the original test is given. The studentmust at least contact the instructor in some way prior to the administration of thenormally scheduled test. There will be no exceptions to this rule (car troubles, sickness, etc.) without documentation. Should a test be missed the student will receive a zero.Make-up tests may only be scheduled during the Instructor’s office hours. The studentmust be aware that they are subject to the potential for distractions in taking a test inthe Instructor’s office. If a student is not able to appear around the Instructor’sschedule, then the student will be unable to make up a test.Students will not receive attendance points for absences, excused or otherwise.Homework will be considered late if it is not turned in on the prescribed day.Late homework will be accepted for half credit. If the instructor makes a mathematical mistake in class, then the first student to point itout will receive 1 bonus point on their next test.No extra credit will be given except for what has been laid out in the syllabus. The instructor will use discretion in rounding up or down fridge final grades based onthe student’s overall participation: attendance, contribution to the class atmosphere, doing homework problems on the board, visiting the instructor during office hours, etc.Grades will not be rounded up for exemption of the Final. If a student exempts the Final Exam, then their final grade will be the lower of theiroverall grade and their average test grade.Grades will be earned based on the grading scale and grading outline listed above. Therewill be no deviations from this. It is; therefore, inappropriate for students to ask for agrade at the end of the semester in which they do not have enough points for. Amountof time spent studying, needing to pass the class to graduate, needing a certain GPA fora scholarship, etc. will not be factored into actual point totals which determine grades.Semester points may not be obtained after the Final Exam is given. The instructor reserves the right to make any changes to the syllabus or course scheduleif absolutely necessary and in the best mutual interest of the students and instructor. All college policies regarding student conduct, academic honesty, students withdisabilities, withdrawals, etc. apply in this course. MAC 2311 begins with a short review of precalculus topics including a diagnostic test in WebAssign. You should already be competent in working this material. We strongly recommend that students who are having difficulty with the precalculus review material consider first taking MAC 1147, a four credit precalculus course
