Appendix A – Course CodesEach course code submitted to PIMS must be mapped to a standardized state course code; the PennsylvaniaDepartment of Education (PDE) lists standardized courses for use in federal reporting for Act 82 Building Scorecalculation and the Future Ready PA Index. will indicate if the course is a core content course. All core contentcourses are associated with one of the core content subject areas including: English, Reading/Language Arts,Mathematics, Sciences, Foreign Languages, Music and Art, and Social Studies (history, economics, geography, and civics and government). The standardized course list is based on the 5-digit course codes in the National Center for Education Statistics(NCES) School Codes for the Exchange of Data (SCED) classification system for courses in the United States.Information, including course descriptions, is available in the School Course Classification System: SchoolCodes for Exchange of Data (SCED), found on the NCES website (nces.ed.gov/forum/SCED.asp). 2007-341.SCED is part of the NCES data handbook series and is published as a searchable electronic database,Handbooks Online. Use the following links: NCES website or go to the NCES Handbook and search for SCED.Only submission of core-content courses is required. Submission of all other course data is optional. Optionalcourse data submitted by local education agencies (LEAs) will be stored in the PIMS data warehouse but willnot Beginning in the 2018-19 school year, LEAs are encouraged to submit all course subject areas. CoreContent subject area courses will still be used in support of the Building Score calculation School PerformanceProfile (SPP) used in educator evaluation, as prescribed under Act 82 of 2012 (note that school-level PVAAS isalso included in the SPP but is not indicated in this appendix).
