UNDERGRADUATE REGULATIONS & SYLLABUSES 2018/2019THE FACULTY OF MEDICAL SCIENCESHOW TO USE THIS HANDBOOKThe Faculty handbooks (also known as Faculty Booklets) are available on the Campus website in PDF format at hgp://sta.uwi.edu/faculty-booklet-archive . The handbooks include: Relevant Faculty Regula ons – eg. Admission Criteria, ExempPons, Progression, GPA, Leave of Absence, etc. Relevant University Regula ons including the Plagiarism RegulaPons and DeclaraPon Forms Other InformaPon on Co-Curricular courses, Language courses and Support for Students with physical and otherdisabiliPes or impairments. Programme Descrip ons and Course Lis ngs which include the list of courses to be pursued in each programme(degrees, diplomas and cerPficates), sorted by level and semester; course credits and credits to be completed foreach programme – majors, minors and specials. However, the first teaching in the Faculty atthis campus was started in 1969 at the Port of Spain GeneralHospital where several of our current senior staff have beentrained. UNDERGRADUATE REGULATIONS & SYLLABUSES 2018/2019THE FACULTY OF MEDICAL SCIENCESGENERAL INFORMATIONThe Faculty offers six (6) undergraduate degree programmes as follows:1. Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)/ B.Med. Sci)2. Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS)3. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)4. BSc Pharmacy5. BSc Nursing (pre and post registraPon)6. BSc OptometryThe MBBS, DVM and DDS programmes are accredited by the Caribbean AccreditaPon Authority for EducaPon in Medicineand Other Health Professions (CAAM-HP).Dress Code and ConductStudents must at all Pmes conduct and present themselves in a manner in keeping with the nature of the profession forwhich they are in training, and as directed by the School in which registered. Any student who is not appropriately auredwill not be agended to by staff in the Dean’s Office, Schools or Departments.Student ID cards must be displayed at all mes, when on UWI/ RHA premises. This includes a ending classes, laboratorysessions and clinical rota ons. Student ID cards are required to facilitate all transac ons in the Faculty/ University.Food and drink are not be brought into the classrooms/ laboratories or be consumed there. Students should also refrainfrom chewing gum.Immunisa onIt is expected that all prospecPve students, including elecPve students entering the Faculty of Medical Sciences should havebeen inoculated against HepaPPs B prior to admission. Students entering the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine programmeare required to be immunized against Rabies, Tetanus and Yellow Fever prior to admission.Registra onPlease note that the registra on of a student is not complete un l the appropriate tui on and other fees have been paidin respect of that student or arrangements acceptable to the Campus Principal have been made with respect to thepayment of such fees. A late registra on fee of TT 200 applies for each semester.Exemp onsA student who has completed a course and passed an examinaPon from this or another recognised University in a courseequivalent to the part or the whole of a course in any of the degree programmes in the Faculty may apply through theDirector/ Head of Department for exempPon. The Director/Head of Department shall examine the syllabus, the Pme whichhas elapsed since the course was completed, and in parPcular whether such course is equivalent in whole or in part to thatoffered in the parPcular programme The Director/Head of Department through the Dean shall make one of the followingrecommendaPons to the Faculty Board indicaPng the reasons for such recommendaPon:a.b.c.that the student be exempted from both the course and the examinaPonthat the student be exempted from a part or the whole of the course, but be required to take a part of or the fullexaminaPonthat the applicaPon be rejected ExempPons and credit shall not normally be granted to students who have been asked to withdraw from and are readmiged to the Faculty for whatever reason axer a lapse of more than two years. Applicants from the Faculty shall be eligible for exempPons and credit of common courses taken in the Faculty if themark earned was not less than 50%.Debarments, Repeats, Withdrawalsa.Where there is dissaPsfacPon with the work of a student, the Director/Head of a Department may report the magerto the Dean and the Faculty Board which may recommend to the Academic Board (St. AugusPne) that the student bedebarred from the examinaPon and either repeat the course or be required to withdraw from the Faculty of MedicalSciences.b.Students required to withdraw from the University for failing to complete the degree programme within the sPpulated9Return to Table of Contents

UNDERGRADUATE REGULATIONS & SYLLABUSES 2018/2019THE FACULTY OF MEDICAL SCIENCESPme or for poor performance as provided for in the Faculty RegulaPons, may apply for re-entry into the Faculty axerat least one year has elapsed since their withdrawal.c.Students thus re-admiged to the Faculty may, in accordance with its RegulaPons, be granted exempPon from courses,subject to there being no change in the content of the courses and provided that no more than five years have elapsedsince the date of withdrawal.d.Students whose performance in Year 1 indicates general weakness (e.g. bare passes in all courses) may be required bythe Faculty to repeat the year.e.Students from one Faculty who had been required to withdraw from the University for failing to complete their degreeprogramme within the sPpulated period may be immediately admiged to another Faculty. Such students may begranted exempPon from Year 1 courses relevant to the new programme subject to (c) above.f.A student who voluntarily withdraws from the University and who applies for re-admission within five (5) years shallbe granted exempPon and credit for courses previously passed, subject to the Pme limit for the maintenance of creditsPpulated in the relevant Faculty RegulaPons. All grades previously obtained shall be used in the determinaPon of thestudent’s GPA.Leave of Absencea.b.c.A student who for good reason wishes to be absent from an academic programme for a semester or more must applyonline for formal leave of absence, staPng the reason for the applicaPon.The length of such leave of absence, if granted, will be subject to approval by the Academic Board of the campusconcerned, but will not exceed one (1) academic year in the first instance.Leave of absence will not be granted for more than two (2) consecuPve academic years.Review of Examina on Results - UWI Regula ons (Sec on VII):141 (i) A student who is dissaPsfied with the results of his/her examinaPon should report his/her dissaPsfacPon in wriPngto the Campus Registrar. Such a report must be made within two weeks of publicaPon of results, and in the case ofthe Supplemental/Summer School or re-sit examinaPons within five days of the publicaPon of results.(ii) The Campus Registrar shall forward the student’s request to the Dean of the Faculty concerned.(iii) Only students who have failed a course may request to go through his/her script with the Examiner; (uPlizing anapproved electronic teleconferencing system if necessary);(iv) Students may request to have their scripts remarked.142. (i) In carrying out the process of going through examinaPon scripts with students who have failed courses, theExaminer must disclose the marks/grades.(ii) The process at 142(i) should include failed answers in mulPple choice examinaPons.143.A student who wishes to have his/her script remarked must pay a fee of Bds 125.00 or J 2000.00 or TT 375.00, orUS 62.50 (according to campus) to have his/her script re-marked by a new Examiner.144.Where re-marking of a script under RegulaPon 143 above results in a higher mark than that previously recorded,the fee shall be refunded provided that the increased mark results in a change of grade.10Return to Table of Contents
